Cskin
Someone got me thinking on another board, the search for a TE that might not necessarily play TE right now. Preferably a youngster, a college kid. Who came to mind? Battleship Lorenzen of the Kentucky Wildcats. The guy is 270lbs. naked, not that I know personally, and is one of the more athletic guys I've seen for his size. The Wildcats used to roll him out of the pocket, and he certainly wasn't afraid to tuck it and run.... wreaking havoc for opposing defenders to tackle. I watched him a couple of games, and he's got some nice wheels for a guy his size. How bad can a QB's hands be? ********************* On a side note, I think the TE issue may be a bit overblown. Do we not have the prototypical H-back on the roster in Mike Sellers? They guy is 6'3 and 270lbs., runs well and has good hands. Heck, he lead the canadian league in rushing for FBs, and is known to be a devastating blocker. If only Gibbs could get Chamberlain to be a motivated, high work ethic player. He'd certainly be the primary pass receiving TE. In terms of the blocking TE, look for the scouting dept. to identify a promising OT who is a little light in the seat. Or... a TE with to much bulk who's primary focus in college was blocking. We need a mauler to line up beside Samuels or Jansen who just crushes opposing DEs or OLBs at the point of attack. It might be worth taking a shot at him with our last pick or signing him up after the draft, as long as he understood it would be as a TE and not QB. He's clearly big, athletic and smart. Could he make the move to TE? It's certainly thinking outside of the box.
Funkyalligator
I agree on Lorenzen for a man his size he is very athletic and it will give us a "backup" quarterback on the field...plus imagine the trick plays you could run with Ramsey, Gardner and Lorenzen on the field at the same time. earl
not a bad idea, but how is his down field speed. i always see him sitting in the pocket. furthermore, can a qb (finess) have the mean streak to battle in the trenches. maybe another option could be a speed DE that is considered to be too small for the nfl. no names come to mind. Jimbo
Viking HC Mike Tice was originally a QB for the Terps and ended up as a TE so it's definitely not unprecedented.
Cskin
Oh Lorenzen is mean as a snake. When forced, he tucks the ball and heads downfield looking for someone to run over. I remember the announcers of and SEC game saying how opposing teams would prefer he sit in the pocket and pass..... because having him run the ball was a nightmare. I definitely think it's "ideas" like this that will likely suprise us come draft day. If the staff was on top of things....they'd draft for need and then identify "athletes" would could be coached into new positions.
