Redskins sign punter Kevin Stemke

Recommended Posts

The Redskins signed 25 year-old punter Kevin Stemke this week, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. Hopefully Bryan "shank" Barker is on his way out. :D

How do I know we signed Stemke? Only Buddha knows how I get my secret information before it is announced in the newspapers.

P Kevin Stemke

(6-2, 188, 4.9) Wisconsin

Notes: Left-footed kicker who has done Wisconsin’s punting the past four years. Averaged 43.9 yards in 1997 with a net of 38.7 yards. Had a 43.8-yard average on 72 punts and a 37.4-yard net in ’98. Was asked to do more directional punting in ’99, which resulted in his average falling to 41.3, but he had a 39-yard net, and 17 of his 50 punts pinned the opponent inside its own 20-yard line. Won All-America honors and the Ray Guy trophy as the best punter in the country in 2000, when he averaged 44.8 yards on 65 punts, and his 42.9-yard net was the best in the nation. Placed 21 of his 65 punts inside the 20-yard line. Experienced back problems at the end of his senior season in the Sun Bowl.

Positives: Left-footed (reverse spin makes ball harder to catch for return men who normally face right-footed kickers), two-step punter who can get rid of the ball quickly. Good all-around athlete with soft hands. Was a pretty good quarterback and safety in high school. Had a terrific senior year until the Sun Bowl.

Negatives: Can be a little inconsistent. Is not a kickoff man. Has had some back and incontinence problems and wears an adult diaper during games. Teammates gave him the nickname "Stinky Stemke".

Summary: Should be punting in the NFL in 2001 if his back is healthy.

How about BROOKS BARNARD, the former Maryland standout? He was signed by the Pats for one weeks this year when Walter was struggling. SO Brooks kicked for a better average than Matt Turk (the dolphins P, familiar as well) and had like 4 i-20's. The game was also played in 25 MHP swirling wind....and then the Pats cut him and resigned Walter...****s.

Strong legged lefty punter led the nation with net punting with a 38.7 yard average per kick. He won the Ray Guy award as the nations' top punter. Stemke is a two-time All-Big 10 punter with career gross average of 43.5 yards per punt. Thirty percent of his career punts were down inside the 20 yard line.

He gets consistently fine hangtime with little return yardage. Good directional punter. Solid late pick with early NFL starting grade. Giants interested.
