Cooked Crack
Quote A group of fifth grade Hoover girls forced to play boys in a recreational youth league were not recognized as champions despite winning the league title when the trophy was instead awarded to the boys who lost the game, according to parents. The girls, who played in a competitive girls’ league for three years representing Spain Park, were told they could not continue to use Hoover gyms for their practices unless they joined the city’s youth recreational league and play with boys, according to Jayme Mashayekh, whose daughter was on the winning team. Quote In a Facebook post that went viral, Mashayekh said the girls were told before the title game that they could play in the championship “but if they won they wouldn’t be allowed to have the trophy.” “Excuse me? What?” What did they do to get disqualified? Did they not pay their dues? Did they not play up a level in competition? Oh, it’s because they’re GIRLS?!?!” Mashayekh wrote. “So sure enough these 5th grade girls played their hearts out, left it all on the floor and battled their male counterparts only to be told, ‘No, I’m sorry you don’t count,’” she added. Mashayekh later updated her post indicating that the city and the Hoover Rec Center offered to “make things right for the girls,” but it was unclear what steps were being taken https://www.al.com/news/2023/03/hoover-girls-denied-basketball-trophy-after-winning-championship-against-boys-im-sorry-you-dont-count.html This is going to be the leading story on Fox, right? They talk about women sports all the time so only a matter of time before we get a Fox News a!ert.
MrSilverMaC
I’m sure the guy that made this decision thought his clever plan all the way through and it won’t come back to bite him in the ass at all.
Fergasun
I saw an interesting thought on the internet when it came to athletes. Boys sports are actually mislabeled and should be "open for all genders". Girls sports should be "closed" (I am sharing the writers opinion). This is ridiculous....

GhostofSparta
Wow, Confederate stronghold Alabama is pretending the winner didn't win and is instead glorifying the losers because they like that outcome more despite reality? What an unexpected outcome for a place like that. 1 14

Califan007 The Constipated
So this is apparently the story: - Girls team was comprised of the best female players while the boys team was just regular boys - Because of that, rules stipulated they had to play against older players (something like 2 years older) - However, there were no teams with older players for them to play against...or something...so they played against the regular boys team - They were told ahead of time that, due to this, if they won they would not receive the championship trophy, that would go to the runners-up - They went ahead and played, probably because the alternative was no practicing and no playing at all (or at least playing a reduced schedule) - Nobody apparently thought they would win, or didn't care if they won, because no contingencies were in place if they did - Nobody thought about presenting the trophy to the boys team a day or two prior to the game, nor what to do if the girls won - So now the county/school district/whatever is trying to put together some way of honoring the girls team for their accomplishments instead of brushing them off 1
balki1867
Following up on @Califan007 The Constipated, this Deadspin article seems to indicate this is a problem with Boys' teams as well-- they are forced to play in tournaments with boys 2 grades older just to have access to their practice space (Girls' rec team denied championship after winning boys league (deadspin.com) That said, how ridiculous is it that they dreamed up this policy. If you force a group of kids- boys or girls- to play a tournament with "much better teams" and they win it, then they won the tournament, pure and simple. What's sad is that if the girls had lost the tournament and gotten a 'best girls team' trophy or a participation trophy, people would be losing their minds.
tshile
😂 figures there was more to the story. 49 minutes ago, balki1867 said: If you force a group of kids- boys or girls- to play a tournament with "much better teams" and they win it, then they won the tournament, pure and simple. You have it backwards. The girls team was the much better team.
