Election 2024 & Presidential Race: Demented WannaBe Dictator Trump vs President Biden

We'll see how beneficial that relationship is if Fox loses their defamation lawsuit.  I guess it also gives Trump the opportunity to say things that will help prosecutors in their lawsuits.  I'd love for one of the judges to put a gag order on Trump if he's ever indicted.  Unfortunately, I think Trump will use his appearances as a bully pulpit to denigrate the prosecutors and judges, and I doubt any of the judges will have the cajones to hold him in contempt when he does so.

As in 2016, Trump’s GOP rivals haven’t figured out a way around him

Quote

Republicans who want to run for president in 2024 will have to go over, under, around or through Donald Trump to win the nomination. So far, none has remotely figured out how.

It’s still early, but not that early. Trump is in the race and running hard, despite his legal troubles. Aside from former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who announced her bid last month, the potential GOP candidates are all still making their pilgrimages to Iowa and New Hampshire, hawking their political memoirs, doing high-profile television interviews, and trying their best to look and sound presidential.

What they don’t appear to be doing is meaningfully loosening Trump’s hold over the Republican base. Not that they aren’t trying, kind of.

Alexandra Petri: But could an indictment be good for Trump?

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, currently Trump’s most formidable potential challenger, opened with a strategy of presenting himself as the MAGA-friendly, drama-free alternative to the former president. But when polls showed DeSantis a legitimate threat to win the nomination, Trump reacted by — I know this will come as a surprise — attacking him viciously and often.

The latest mocking nickname Trump has coined, “Ron DeSanctimonious,” does not easily roll off the tongue. But his portrayal of DeSantis as nothing but a faux-populist poseur might be hurting the governor’s standing with the MAGA base. It certainly isn’t helping it. The RealClearPolitics polling average has Trump with a 14-point lead over DeSantis, 43.9 percent to 29 percent.

Now, DeSantis has finally begun to hit back — but with love taps, not actual punches. In an interview with British talking head Piers Morgan, DeSantis called Trump’s attacks “just background noise” and unleashed a veritable trickle of implicit criticism. His own approach to government, DeSantis said, is “no daily drama, focus on the big picture and put points on the board.” He spoke of the importance of the “type of character” a person brings to the presidency. He said that “we have to agree that there’s a certain reality to the world” and not “just create our own facts.”

Meanwhile, Trump was on social media blasting DeSantis — by name — for failing his state on issues such as crime and education — and for his past positions in favor of cutting Medicare and Social Security. “And we don’t want Ron as our President!” he concluded.

More at link.  RDS' framing that is approach of "no daily drama, focus on the big picture and put points on the board" is kind of perfect if one buys into the notion that what the GOP base wants is Trump without the baggage and someone who can advance their policy agenda.  Unfortunately, what the GOP base actually wants is someone who will fight dirty on their behalf and be their asshole and, even though Meatball has pulled a few stunts that are abusive to immigrants and trans kids, he doesn't live and breath at the level of assholishness that Trump exists at.  He has no shot unless Trump has a health, legal or other issue that prevents him from continuing his campaign.

Just depressing as hell to see that's reality. I don't think Joe is going to be able to overcome inflation and perceptions about him not being to up to the task at 82 and we are going to see Trump inaugurated again in January 2025.

Maybe I'm wearing rose-colored glasses, but I think Biden has a pretty good message on the economy and his other achievements, plus the war in Ukraine.  When the contrast is "being up to the task" as compared to a totally unhinged asshole who fomented an insurrection in the recent past, and that was after he lost an election 306-232/7 million votes, I like Biden's chances as of March 2023.

the Desantis team knows his approach isn't working because he's starting to needle Don with Pornstar comments and calling himself a winner. To me, that says they are trying to bait Don into going overboard and ending up hurting himself.  Because The Desantis team must know head-to-head he will come off as a lightweight in comparison. Both literally and figuratively.

I agree, but not because anything Biden has done. But because I think the needed independents and moderate Republicans will likely sit it out before going back to Trump again, and if it's Desantis, then Trump is going to tell his supporters to stay at home or write him in.

Totally.  DeSantis got away with running a shadow campaign for a bit, but Trump has decided to go after him, so Ron can either push all in, or he's going to just get steamrolled.  He's very likely to get steamrolled in either event, which will be fun watching.

Three TikTok users go viral for their prank trolling Truth Social app

An online prank made “#Desantis2024” the top-trending hashtag on Trump’s own platform this week.

Three TikTok users said they believe their video was the inspiration for thousands of people to troll Truth Social, the social media platform launched by former President Donald Trump.

Their goal? To get Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is widely considered to be Trump’s biggest opponent in the 2024 presidential race, trending on Trump’s own platform. DeSantis hasn’t announced his intentions yet, but he is widely expected to run for the Republican presidential nomination.

“If only 100 of us make accounts and post with a new hashtag, it will literally be trending, and Trump will see it,” Peter McIndoe Jr., the creator of the Birds Aren’t Real joke conspiracy theory, told the camera in a shaky video in front of Trump Tower in New York. “So in my opinion, the hashtag we should use is #desantis2024.”

Their efforts appeared to pay off. At the start of this week, Truth Social’s most popular hashtags had barely a few hundred mentions combined. By Tuesday afternoon, #Desantis2024 had shot its way up to the top spot, having accrued more than 1,500 mentions overnight.

I think there will be a **** ton of more people voting against Trump than probably any other GOP candidate. He mobilizes the opposition like no other GOP candidate.

I agree.

But I'm still gonna work for his and Marge's demise here.  I'm on a mission.

Trump will be the gop nominee. As far as what will happen in Nov. 24; it’s to early to tell. We don’t what conditions will be then.

It’s hard to imagine this country being dumb enough to elect Trump again but they elected him once. If we are in a recession then and inflation still around; who knows.  If he wins, it will be because of a depressed Dem turnout.
