Russian Invasion of Ukraine

I've heard several people on a couple networks mention that they think that Putin is acting different....like he's changed from years ago.  At 70+, could it be a last ditch effort to get back what he thinks should be in place or perhaps he has a cognitive decline?  The latter is what scares me.  An unchecked leader that isn't thinking clearly steam rolling through other countries.  I hope this ends up better than I think it will.  I'm afraid this won't end well.

I've heard that, too.

This guy totally pwned us in 2016, he's not stupid in anyway shape or form.

But many people, including his own citizens, believe he's slippin lately.

he is not one of the best at ANYTHING.  he has one strategy, it is blatantly obvious and simplistic, ... but he has nukes in his pocket.

calling putin "the best" at anything is insulting even to people that can fit 400 cigarettes in their mouth (and are at least legitimately good at SOMETHING)

Putin was instrumental in installing a puppet government in the most powerful  superpower the world had ever seen in 2016.  Keep underestimating him if you want, I won't.

I do remember you bring it up often and thinking it was an unfair critique...or maybe it was just the frequency I had an issue with. I'm not sure, the bourbon makes thing hazy. But im sure I owe you an apology as you clearly were right.

I still don't know what the correct thing to do is. You can cripple Russia's economy and make many many innocent people there suffer.....which ultimately I guess effects our economy because we are so reliant on their oil. Which may cause you a political problem.....political problem that turn into American citizen problems....it gets complicated fast and I dont even understand half of it.

I'm not going to say what I wish we could do with our drone capabilities because I assume that would get me on a list some place. But I like to think I know our capabilities, and it upsets me that we haven't just ended this problem already.

I don’t think we are reliant on Russian oil; other countries are though. Think we still get most of our oil from the Middle East.

Except he's not 70+.  He's only 69.

UPDATED: Russian Navy Cruisers Positioned to Counter U.S., French and Italian Carrier Groups in the Mediterranean

Three Russian guided-missile cruisers have been arrayed across the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to counter three NATO carrier strike groups, causing concern in the Pentagon, a U.S. defense official told USNI News on Tuesday.

As of Monday, the three Slava-class cruisers were operating in and around the Aegean Sea – RTS Moskva (121) in the Black Sea, RFS Varyag (011) south of Italy and RTS Marshal Ustinov (055) off the coast of Syria, near Russia’s naval base in Tartus.

Moskva is based in the Black Sea, while Marshal Ustinov traveled from the Northern Fleet and Varyag from the Pacific Fleet. Ustinov and Varyag entered the Mediterranean from opposite ends earlier this month.

The three 11,500-ton Slavas were designed around launchers that can hold 16 SS-N-12 Sandbox anti-ship cruise missiles – each about the size of a telephone pole. Developed in the 1970s, the Slavas and the Sandboxes were designed to take on U.S. and NATO aircraft carriers by overwhelming them with a barrage of high-speed cruise missiles to sink ships.

The position of the cruisers around the Aegean is a complication for the U.S., Italian and French carrier strike groups that have been operating in the Mediterranean the last several weeks.

^^^First, the Truman holds a special place in my heart as my last sea-duty command in my career.  Any Sailor will always claim their ship is the best in the fleet.  But I really believe the Truman is the best we have and has been for a number of years.  The swagger that the crew maintains, and therefore forces themselves to maintain, is quite impressive.

Second, the fact that three Russian cruisers, not task groups but singular ships, are much of a concern to three Carrier Strike Groups is hilarious.  A CSG is usually six or so ships plus at least one sub.  Probably two or three considering their deployment location.  And our sub force is pretty much unmatched, especially against a singular Russian cruiser.

I wouldn’t bet against our Navy.

I was wondering if it was related do their relative positions?

Looks like the cruisers could potentially block Truman’s exit from the Adriatic Sea if Putin opted to do something extremely provocative….

In general, one ship cannot block another from normal, legal navigation in international water.  If they tried to do that, we would be able to out maneuver them past choke points if needed.  Once in open water, then it isnt’ a concern.  They could fire on us but that would give an excuse to fire back.  They could try a physical blockade (trying to put their ship in a position that a collision would result from trying to go in a certain direction) but we could easily sacrifice one ship from the CSG to “collide” with theirs and take it out of commission.  Then the rest of the CSG can go by.  And we’d make it clear that we won’t let that happen again.  Or we’d just have a sub take out their propulsion.  We drill on these situations quite frequently.

https://www.rt.com/russia/550368-massive-cyberattack-underway-ukraine/

Government websites and banks in Ukraine have been hit by outages as part of a reported cyberattack against the country’s digital infrastructure, with officials in Kiev saying it is a major attempt by hackers to take down online platforms.

A statement issued on Wednesday evening by the country’s Minister of Digital Transformation Mikhail Fedorov said that “at around 4.00pm, another massive ‘denial-of service’ attack on our state began. There is data to this effect from a number of banks and there are also problems with accessing the website of the national parliament, the Cabinet of Ministers and the Foreign Ministry.”

I am surprised that Russia and China haven’t made a deal. Russia goes after Ukraine and China goes after Taiwan at the same time.

China wouldn’t have to telegraph that move.  Putin wants everyone to know what he is doing. He could have done this with much less of a show.

Time for a McArthy era roundup of the communists…

What irony that ignorant fools holding office like Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor-Green, Madison Cawthorne and the rest of that ilk will call virtually any political opponent "communist" at the drop of a hat.  Yet here is Vladimir Putin actively trying to re-constitute the Soviet Union by invading an emerging democracy and they're cheering him on.

In the last six months they have engaged in multiple joint military drills, definitely showing unity. In one of their exercises just a couple of months ago, ships from both of their navies encircled Japan. https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202110/1237037.shtml
That set off a few alarms.
