Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Putin wants new ‘grand bargain’ with the West, says Turkish official

According to Kalin, it looks inevitable that Russia’s war in Ukraine will continue for some time, and the question is how much damage will have occurred before negotiations resume.

“Our understanding is that Mr. Putin wants to have a new grand bargain, a new deal with the West,” the spokesperson said.

“It’s partly about Ukraine, no doubt. But the larger issue is really a new deal between Russia and the Western world.”

Kalin noted that Moscow feels that the agreements made at the end of the Cold War, under Presidents Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, no longer reflect the Russia of today.

“There is a new Russia, there is a new world, there is a new reality, and they want to have a new bargain,” he said, adding that as a result, the entire global liberal order is facing a big test.

Erdogan had a phone talk with Putin on Oct. 7. Prior to that, on Oct. 6, the Turkish leader said that even the worst peace in Ukraine would be better than war.

Erdogan said the deal allowing the export of Ukrainian grain from several Ukrainian Black Sea ports and latest prisoner swaps were examples of what could be achieved through mediation and negotiation.

The new deal is everyone understands you’re incompetent bumbling nation who’s only real power is your ability to throw all your people into a slaughter

so. Crawl back into your hole and stfu and be glad no one decided you’re such a joke they’re going to destroy your whole country and take some land for themselves.

a new deal? i dont get it. what does he want...east germany back?

He's already said what he wants - the borders of NATO rolled back to where they were in the 80s, all the Warsaw Pact countries back in Russia's iron embrace, and of course Ukraine, probably followed by the Baltic states. This was back before this year's invasion, when he expected to roll into Kyiv in a few days and the west to cower before the awesome power of the Russian military.

He views the collapse of the Soviet Union as a gigantic and unnecessary mistake orchestrated by the United States (who are behind every setback that Russia faces). IIRC back when he was a KGB guy stationed in East Germany, he was desperately trying to get the army to send to tanks to mow down the people heading to demolish the Berlin Wall. Fortunately, back then he was a nobody and was ignored.

Putin also seems to view himself as destined to restore Russia to it's former glory, and by "former" he's not thinking about the Soviet Union, he's thinking about the old 19th century Russian empire. This is a man who idolises Peter the Great and Stalin, and absolutely detests the West and the United States in particular.

Shock and horror after Russia's wave of strikes across Ukraine

The past few hours have seen wave after wave of explosions, not just here in Kyiv, but all across this vast country, from Lviv in the west to Kharkiv in the east and Odesa in the south.

For those of us who were here when Russia's full-scale invasion began in February, there's an element of déjà vu. We've been told to spend as much time as we can in the basement, as further attacks, using missiles and drones, are expected.

But this is also different. The explosions here in Kyiv are much closer to the centre. Not distant thumps from the suburbs, but loud reverberations close to streets and locations we've come to know well in the past eight months.

It's difficult to tell what is being targeted, but a statement from Ukraine's ministry of culture said museums and the Philharmonic building had been hit.

One video circulating on social media showed a huge crater in a children's playground.

Another showed a missile blast hitting Mayor Vitali Klitschko's glass bridge, a popular tourist spot and viewpoint above the Dnipro River.

"I think they wanted to hit the university building and the monument to Hrushevsky. Those are important symbols for us, it was a symbolic attack."

Sounds like they're firing indiscriminately at civilian targets to instill fear as a retaliation for their military failures and the attack on the bridge.

New troops in Putin's mobilization are suffering terrible conditions - report

Russians who are forced to serve in the military as part of President Vladimir Putin's mandatory mobilization draft reportedly lack food, uniforms, money and places to sleep, according to a published statement made by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry last week.

Approximately 6,000 people were planned to have accommodation at the Omsk Tank Engineering Institute. However, by the end of last month, 9,000 people had arrived with another 2,000 coming in the following days.

The institution's management is unable to provide the soldiers with even the minimum living conditions and food, the ministry claimed. There are not enough toilets and there are many sick who are not provided with medical assistance.

In the Bryansk and Kursk regions, some that are called as part of the mobilization are forced to buy their own uniforms and equipment. Both Western and Ukrainian intelligence reported last month that not only do they lack the gear, but are not properly trained for war.

Lukashenka Says Ukraine 'Planning' Attack On Belarus

Belarus's authoritarian leader, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, said that Russia and Belarus will deploy a joint military task force, claiming without evidence that Ukraine is planning to attack his country.

"I've said already that today Ukraine is not just discussing but planning strikes on the territory of Belarus," state news agency Belta quoted Lukashenka as saying during a meeting with security officials.

"We have agreed to deploy a regional grouping of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus," he added, without specifying where the troops would be deployed.

He said the formation of these troops started two days ago, coinciding with an explosion on a bridge linking Crimea to Russia that Moscow blamed on Ukraine.

Belarus "must have plans in advance to counter all kinds of scoundrels who are trying to drag us into a fight," Lukashenka said.

"There should be no war on the territory of Belarus," he added.

Belarus relies financially and politically on its key ally Russia.

Russian forces used Belarus as a staging post for their February 24 invasion of Ukraine, sending troops and equipment into northern Ukraine from bases inside Belarus.

------------------------------------

The puppet speaks.  Sounds like Putin is trying to build a pretext to finally get Belarus more directly involved in the war.

On 10/10/2022 at 9:52 AM, The Sisko said:

It's no wonder that the MAGAT crowd sees them as comrades.🙄 However, they conveniently edited out the ending of the couple's parachute jump in which they land in Ukraine and are handed a rusty AK, three bullets and told to go fight.

And the fact that they are wearing life jackets, not parachutes.

Zaporizhzhia power cut again, plant using diesel generators -IAEA chief

The recently restored power line supplying the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine has been cut again, forcing the plant to switch to emergency diesel generators, the U.N. atomic watchdog chief Rafael Grossi said on Wednesday.

"Our team at #Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant informed me this morning that the plant has lost all of its external power for the 2nd time in five days," Grossi said on Twitter, renewing his call for a protection zone around the plant to prevent shelling near the facility.

Can someone explain to my why a plant that generates power needs an external power source?  Can't they just generate their own power?

I think ZPP had been taken offline (to avoid the possibility of a meltdown)  I am not not an EE,  but I believe it has to do with when the plant goes idle.  Those turbines/pumps are huge and require alot of energy to "start up".  The thing with a nuclear power plant is once the reaction starts, you can't take it totally offline until its decomissioned, because you have to keep pumping coolant through the fueling rods.

Its like the same reason an internal combustion engine needs an external power source in order to start it up.  For a small engine like a lawnmower, pulling a cord rapidly is enough, but for a car, they need a battery.
