Colonial Pipeline blames ransomware for network shutdown

Top U.S. fuel pipeline operator Colonial Pipeline has shut its entire network after a cyberattack, the company said in a statement on Friday.

Colonial's network supplies fuel from U.S refiners on the Gulf Coast to the populous eastern and southern United States. The company transports 2.5 million barrels per day of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other refined products through 5,500 miles of pipelines.

Colonial Pipeline says it transports 45 percent of East Coast fuel supply.

In a subsequent statement Saturday it blamed ransomware.

"We have since determined that this incident involves ransomware," Colonial Pipeline said. "In response, we proactively took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations, and affected some of our IT systems."

US fuel pipeline hackers 'didn't mean to create problems'

A cyber-criminal gang that took a major US fuel pipeline offline over the weekend has acknowledged the incident in a public statement.

"Our goal is to make money and not creating problems for society," DarkSide wrote on its website.

The US issued emergency legislation on Sunday after Colonial Pipeline was hit by a ransomware cyber-attack.

The pipeline carries 2.5 million barrels a day - 45% of the East Coast's supply of diesel, petrol and jet fuel.

The operator took itself offline on Friday after the cyber-attack. Work to restore service is continuing.

On Monday, the FBI officially confirmed that DarkSide was responsible for compromising Colonial Pipeline's networks, saying that it was continuing to work with the firm and other government agencies on the investigation.

DarkSide posted a statement on its website, describing itself as "apolitical".

"We do not participate in geopolitics, do not need to tie us with a defined government and look for... our motives," the group said.

The group also indicated it had not been aware that Colonial was being targeted by one of its affiliates, saying: "From today, we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future."

The US government relaxed rules on fuel being transported by road, meaning drivers in 18 states can work extra or more flexible hours when transporting refined petroleum products.

US fuel prices at the pump were largely unaffected on Monday, but there are fears that this could change if the shutdown is prolonged.

"Unless they sort it out by Tuesday, they're in big trouble," said Mr Sharma. "The first areas to be hit would be Atlanta and Tennessee, then the domino effect goes up to New York."

He said oil futures traders were now "scrambling" to meet demand, at a time when US inventories are declining.

Hahahaha that’s the best public acknowledgment ive seen of a hack so far

Criminals do not usually release public statements.  This whole situation is odd.

Hackers do.

i mean maybe “usually” can be up for debate but it’s common enough for hackers to publicly claim their hacks especially when it’s such a high profile one

hell, anonymous (when they were relevant?) would announce theirs before they did it sometimes

Also - many hacker groups will claim they’re fighting against our corporate overlords on our behalf. They have almost like a mission statement and ethics behind it all.

so if they’re one of those then the idea that they screwed up life for normal people is a bad hit to their reputation. I’d venture to guess it’s caused infighting over it, given their public statement.

and yeah the line is blurry there on who’s hurt when this stuff happens...

US pipeline shutdown sparks worries of $3 gas

A cyberattack forced the largest US fuel pipeline to shut down Friday, and analysts are worried the disruption could result in a spike in gas prices.

The Colonial Pipeline system spans more than 5,500 miles and transports about 45% of all fuel consumed on the East Coast. It transports 2.5 million barrels per day of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and home heating oil.

"The number of days that the line is out of service is critical," Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service, which tracks gas prices at 140,000 US stations, told CNN Business.

"The greatest concern is in coastal states from Georgia north to the Delmarva Peninsula," Kloza said, referring to the peninsula that includes parts of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Supply to the northeast can readily be supplemented with foreign imports of gasoline, he said, but several other states don't have that advantage. "Tennessee is also a primary supply concern, as it often runs out of gasoline during normal circumstances," he said.

Limited supply could mean higher fuel prices for motorists during the spring driving season. US gasoline futures for May delivery gained 1.5% on Monday, rising to $2.16 a gallon. Prices had spiked as much as 4% in early trading.

The national average pump price of regular gas stands at $2.97 a gallon, according to AAA, up more than 60% from a year ago when prices and demand were bottoming out. The national average could surpass $3 a gallon this summer, and go even higher if hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast or if there are additional supply outages.

Yeah idk what these people are talking about but my truck takes 89 and it’s already 3.20 whatever

Also ethanol free is like 3.80

If you look at the article they are referring to national average price.  Of course places like California and here already exceed the average.

This coupled with some 'random' incidents in my own workplace has us in full on intrusion detection mode. Fun time. I never knew about the set default language to something mother Russia would like as a sign of friendly cyber waters thing until now.

Gotta love how they also talk about themselves as if they're some legit operation

Yeah I get it I’m just shocked the rest of the country is so much more. Guess I shouldn’t be

In their minds they are legit. They’re the equivalent of protest/political groups that basically think the existing power structure is fundamentally bad for “normal people” and that they’re fighting the good fight on our behalf against our corrupt governments and corporate overlords.

They’re like people who shoplift thinking they’re just stealing from companies that can afford it/abuse us for profits/have insurance.

Fuel additives (for cleaner air) and state taxes make up the majority of differences in gas prices in the lower 48.

For example, California has both an air quality problem and acts as a major launch point (and terminus) for all truck traffic carrying goods from and to Asia (not to mention housing 12% of the countries population). Federal funding to California for roads comes nowhere close to keeping them repaired. Thus the double whammy of taxes and fees per gallon on gas here.

We've been in the high $3 range in the East Bay for a few months now. Parts of the other Bay Area counties already are over $4.

Has anybody else in Carolina - or elsewhere - experienced this?

Just got pinged by someone in nc saying they cannot find gas anywhere but one station and the line is very long

it’s panic buying. That’s all.

the govt put out a release urging people not to panic buy because it would cause this. But you know how that goes these days...

Yeah that was probably doomed from the beginning.

That is what happens when people panic buy. Short term shortages are created. It's the toilet paper 2.0 for 2021.

The person that pinged me on the NC gas shortages just followed up with

“But I have plenty of toilet paper!”

Reminds me of this from the height of the toilet paper shortage:
