Fencing around Capitol comes down more than 2 months after riots

 

The outer fencing put up to protect the U.S. Capitol following the Jan. 6 insurrection has started to come down, allowing the public to regain access to the iconic building's grounds.

 

CNN observed National Guardsmen beginning the removal process this weekend, and by Sunday, much of the black fencing that had made the complex a fortress for nearly three months had been taken apart, making way for the typical parade of joggers, bicyclists and other visitors to once again make use of the green space.

 

The removal will come as a welcomed change to a public used to having a generous amount of access to the grounds, something that quickly changed after the U.S. Capitol Police on Jan. 6 temporarily lost control of the building to a pro-Trump mob in a siege that left five dead.

 

In the weeks after, officials erected the fencing — some of which was replete with barbed wire — and, aside from the scores of guardsmen and other security people stationed around the perimeter, the only people allowed to enter the grounds were lawmakers, staff, escorted guests and members of the media.

 

In addition to the reopened grounds, some streets near the complex also reopened this weekend to vehicular traffic.

Videos show ally of Marjorie Taylor Greene among mob inside Capitol during January 6 riot

 

Footage from the January 6 riot at the US Capitol shows a close ally of Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene inside the building.

 

CNN previously reported that Anthony Aguero, a conservative live-streamer, activist and associate of Greene, said on video following the riot that he had been among those who entered the building.


At the time of that February report, Aguero declined to answer if he had been inside when pressed by CNN. He claimed videos later posted to social media accounts from both inside the Capitol and outside were not his, but screen recorded from others.


The publicly posted videos of the riot reviewed by CNN's KFile are now the first visual confirmation that Aguero went inside the building. Aguero previously confirmed to CNN that he was at the Capitol on January 6 and said he was an "independent journalist" there reporting the events.


Aguero, however, appears to have never uploaded any footage he took inside the Capitol to Facebook or Instagram. And in videos previously reported on by CNN, he can be heard chanting "heave ho" as rioters were attempting to break in on the West Side of the Capitol. In a comment, Aguero wrote "MAGA" under the video. Later, Aguero can be heard chanting "our house" among the Capitol mob on the East Side of the building.

 

Greene, the freshman congresswoman with a history of promoting dangerous and fringe conspiracies and comments, encouraged the big lie that the election was stolen from former President Donald Trump by voting to object to the election's certification. She fanned the flames ahead of the Capitol insurrection by telling her supporters on Twitter to "FIGHT. FOR. TRUMP."

 

Greene and Aguero have worked closely together over the years on causes such as immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border wall and have attended pro-Trump rallies together. In many since-deleted videos saved by CNN's KFile, Greene repeatedly calls Aguero "amazing" and a "friend." On social media, Aguero has called Greene "one of my closest friends."


Prior to January's riot at the Capitol, Greene was photographed with Aguero in Washington at the "March for Trump" post-election rally, also known as the Million MAGA March, on November 14, 2020, where Greene spoke. Following Greene's speech, Aguero accompanied Greene off the stage in a video of the rally. A November tweet of the pair at the rally was liked by Greene.

 

On Friday, Democratic Rep. Jimmy Gomez introduced a resolution to expel Greene from Congress, suggesting that she "advocated violence against our peers, the Speaker and our government."

Haven't followed the link yet.  But yeah, the thought has been occurring to me ever since the insurrection to wonder why they didn't bring guns.  

 

I mean, they're right wing gun nuts.  They bring guns to press conferences.  They pose guns on the wall behind them when they talk to the press.  They can't go grocery shopping without an AR-15.  

 

But, no guns here?  Heck, not only no guns from the organized people like the Proud Boys.  But not one of the right wing cosplayers had to get a picture with his AR in the House chamber?  

 

That had to be planned, right?  Even the disposable pawns leaving the guns at home?

 

And if so, isn't that coordination also proof of conspiracy?  

 

Edit:  I may have thought of an explanation.  At least to explain the disarmed state of the disposable pawns.  Was Trump's pep rally secured?  Did they have to go through SS security, to see Trump's speech?  

 

Although I'm still surprised the Proud Boys and such didn't have weapons cached, somewhere between the WH and the Capitol.

It is a felony to open carry a firearm in the District of Columbia, as is concealed carry without a permit from the MPD.  Concealed carry permits from other jurisdictions are not valid.  So those guys were flirting with committing a felony if found in possession of a firearm. In most cases, persons convicted of that felony forfeit their right to possess a firearm - a nightmare scenario for those yahoos.

You're saying that the thought of a gun law conviction stopped them from carrying?  

 

More self restraint than I give them credit for.  

 

And also hard to reconcile.  

 

"I'm gonna carry these flex cuffs on my trip to invade the Capitol.  So I can capture congressmen.  But don't want to carry my gun.  Might get caught and prosecuted."

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of those people were carrying concealed illegally. Especially the ones who were part of the more organized elements.

 

At the same time I could certainly see the majority of the people who were there not wanting to do the equivalent of walking into a police station carrying a bag of narcotics in their hand and saying "hey guys, what's up?", and hence deciding to leave their guns at home.

Ex-NYPD officer said to have shaken tambourine during Capitol riot is charged

 

A retired New York police officer who is alleged to have played a tambourine in the halls of the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot has been charged with several misdemeanors, the FBI said.

 

The former officer, Sara Carpenter, 51, turned herself in to federal authorities and appeared before a federal judge in Brooklyn on Tuesday, NBC New York reported.

Carpenter is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

 

The FBI alleged that Carpenter was seen jangling a tambourine while she walked through the Capitol, according to NBC New York.

 

FBI agents interviewed Carpenter in January, and a judge authorized a search warrant this month. Security video from the Capitol and text messages alleged to have been sent by Carpenter tied her to the crimes, NBC New York reported.
