Basic Compensatory Pick Information

When will the compensatory picks be announced??

Answer - They are typically announced after the 1st day of the NFL spring meetings.

How are compensatory picks determined

Compensatory picks involves comparing the quality of the unrestricted free agents a team loses to the quality of the unrestricted free agents signs. It does not matter if the team was not the team that originally drafted the player. The UFAs had to have been UFAs at the end of the prior season. Players who becomes UFAs because they were released are NOT included in the compensatory calculations.

From last year's official draft site: "A total of 31 compensatory choices in the 2001 NFL Draft have been awarded to 16 teams, the NFL announced. Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 31 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 215 choices in the regular seven rounds of the 2001 NFL Draft. This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

Thanks for posting that. I think the next question is how do they define "quality"? Is it determined at the time they were lost/signed or at the end of the season or some sort of average?

If they look at who we let go and what they have done this season then only Thrash that I can think of has done anything even worth compensating for. Connell was a bust, Johnson has had a real up and down year, I don't hear about Smith every week, despite the 49ers having such a good year. Compare that to Jones, Lockett, Barker, Conway, Szott, Carter, Rasby and we appear to have gained.

Now if it is done on reputation then we win big, because Marty brought in players that were solid but not spectacular and let go or got rid of the big names and most of the egos.

The only pity is that we get nothing for Sanders, Stubblefield, Centers, etc since I know players cut aren't covered by comp picks.

I wonder if we should be pulling for the Bucs or the 49ers come the Play-offs, on the chance that we get better comp picks the further they go?!!

It would take more than that to make me pull for the Bucs in the playoffs. smile.gif In fact, the only teams I'd care to see advance at all are the Bears and maybe the Packers.

- I hope the Eagles get humilated.

- I hope the Bucs get humiliated.

When they play each other in the playoffs I'll pull for a scoreless tie that drags on and on so long that everyone goes home and no one cares when one of these sorry teams manages a FG and wins.

- Hope the Rams lose.

- The 49ers weren't down long enough to make me start pulling for them and I used to pull for them only because they were often playing Dallas. I hold no ill will toward them, though.

- The Packers ... hard not to appreciate those guys and their fans. That's what football is all about.

- Da Bears. Don't see them going too far, but I'll be pulling for them anyway.

Brave,

I was only meaning with regard to compensatory picks! In England all the genuine NFL fans support the Skins, 49ers or Dallas. I would always cheer for whoever was playing the Cowboys or 49ers. The Bucs I don't like either but that's more of a recent dislike based on the way the team and their fans act.

My money is on the Packers and the Rams so I will be following them once our season is over.
