The Evil Genius
I hate that some states have major elections (like for Governor) in odd years. It's almost as if they want depressed voter turnout for it.

Larry
Problem with the "Republicans are doomed because of demographics" is, it assumes that people's votes won't change over 20 years. Mine did. I used to vote straight Republican.

Mine did. I used to vote straight Republican. I'd argue that Millenials and Gen Z are largely socially inhospitable with the GOP (plus they are multi ethnic moreso than any previous generations). So unless the GOP makes a large and drastic turn to the left...instead if going more right and white...it isn't happening. 1

NoCalMike
The Newsome recall effort is a joke. They analyzed the collected signatures and over 75% of them come from the most red districts in CA. It mostly consists of people who didn't vote for him in the first place and would support any whackjob that runs against him as long as (R) is next to their name. Just like the Gray Davis recall, it's major funder is a wealthy opponent that was trounced in the election and just threw a bunch of money at the effort to get it off the ground. The problem is this time there is no Ahhhhnoold type candidate for people to rally around in a recall election, just a list of lame nobodies who really have no sound argument for why they should be governor in the first place. It may end up qualifying when all is said and done, but Newsome will survive it and a lot of people will have wasted a lot of time & money.

California has around 40 million residents, they only needed about 1.5 million signatures for a recall, right? Does that even begin to sound right to anyone? We should pull this **** in red states. When they pushed the Gray Davis recall they were smart enough to piggy back on the heels of the energy crisis fallout due to the de-regulation measures taken by the previous Governor's administration. Not that Gray Davis was a superb governor or anything but there was really no justification for him being recalled, and now you see the same thing happening with Newsome, big monied interests trying to capitalize on all the fallout from Covid when people are annoyred and irritated.

For Ca Governor recall, the verified signature requirement is 12% of the total votes cast in the previous Governor election. So roughly 12% of 12.46 million (in 2018). Not a presidential election year, so votes are always depressed. 2020 saw 17+ mil votes cast in California for the Presidency.
