What is thw worst you have been scammed?

I am curious and trying to feel a bit better about my story.

As we were facing a long spout of social distancing (J and I knew from sister in WA we were in for a long summer), we started looking for ways to entertain our 4 kids. We called around to a few pool companies used by people around us. One of them came out to see our yard but said they couldn't install one on a slope, but there is a company they knew who would level that part of the yard for us.

I called the company and a guy from extreme backyards came out to give an estimate (witholding name because might violate board rules even if the name is a scammer). When he gave us his estimate, he said he could also sell us the pool se wanted for less. He then showed pictures of otber pools he had done.

We thought it sounded like a good plan. Then I missed all the warning signs. He needed two thirds down to order the pool.  Then week after week, there was always another delay. Finally I did what I should have done up front. I ran a background check on him. He has a list of judgements against him of stealing incrdasiing amounts. Great, I was just tbe latest, biggest mark. I texted him and said if he couldn't deliver in next couple weeks we wanted a refund.  That's 10k I wont likely see again.  We havent heard from him since despite dozens of attempts to reach him.  I filed a law suit against him, but the attorney general's office for the county said it will be a couple months before they can review it due to man power shortages. They have no interns while law school is out for covid.  The state's attorney general may press charges but they are waiting as well until county decides.

Meanwhile M or P (last name think macho man Randy...), gets to keep scamming people. I figure my money is gone, but I wish the state would stop him from continuing.

So what is your biggest loss?

Gave a street dealer $40 (30 years ago when I lived in LA as a young man)...he was going to come right back with my stuff.  That one hurt the most believe it or not.  Had to pawn my TV.

Biggest would be an old man that brazenly sold me an 86 Pontiac Sun bird with a warped head.

Sorry for your travails g.  Contractors suck.

Back in the day, I was on facebook and got a message on Messenger from a woman that worked in my office.  The message was something along the lines of, "Hey, I'm in Paris with my family, our hotel room was robbed, we don't have anything, all I have is my phone, can you wire us some money?"  Which seemed plausible, this woman was pretty well off and taking vacations all the time, Paris was definitely a place she'd go.  And so I did, but it wasn't a huge amount because I can't remember exactly how much it was...but as soon as I sent it, I just thought to myself "Wait a minute..."  Too late, it was gone.  Her facebook was hacked, someone sent that message.

This was years ago... I was 18 or 19 (and quite dumb as you will read below). I’m hanging out in a nearly empty shopping mall at like 11am while my girlfriend got her hair cut. This guy comes up to me out of the blue, says his car ran out of gas on a road nearby, and asks if I have a phone he can use to make a call. Ok sure, here you go. He tries to make a call and can’t get through to the other person. Tries someone else, a family member he says. No answer. Seems to be getting desperate and asks me if I can give him a ride, that his mom lives a couple miles away. Getting a little weird here but I’m a pretty trusting guy and agree. Drive him over to a not so great part of town. He asks to use the phone again, again can’t get through to anyone. Asks me to drop him off at the gas station up the road. Okie dokie, at least I’m getting this kinda sketchy dude out of my car.

Drive him up to the gas station and then he hits me with it: he doesn’t have any money for gas and asks if he can have $20. I’ve got no cash on me and he begs a little, just $20, there’s an ATM inside. Idk why I agreed but I did. Went inside, took $20 from the ATM, he’s standing beside me antsy and I’m getting really suspicious now that this was all an elaborate game he was playing. After I give him the money my suspicion gets the best of me and I take a look at the call log on my phone. The dude had been calling random numbers and hanging up after 10 seconds. He’s walking outside and I come after him and yell at him to give me the money back. He says no and walks away. I follow him still demanding my money. Guy across the parking lot starts laughing hysterically that this asshole got yet another sucker to give him money. He hops in that guy’s car and as I approach it was made clear that I was risking my health if I continue to press this issue. Finally give up and drive back to the mall where my girlfriend was waiting for me, apparently pretty confident that I was being murdered.

All together, probably a 30+ minute running scam that involved an escalating series of little requests (can I use your phone, can I get a ride, and finally, can you give me money) that I didn’t see through until *just* after I gave him money. All that for $20... wtf

I think this counts as a scam.

I posted an ad on Craigslist for dog walking. A lady called me up, said her name was Sandy and she had two dogs that needed to be walked daily because her and her husband worked long shifts at the hospital.

I show up and ask Sandy if she needs me to walk the dogs since she is there. She says she needs to get ready for work. I ask her if I need a key to get back in the upstairs apartment. Sandy says no, just come up the back stairs the door will be unlocked.

I proceed to walk the dogs around the neighborhood and let them do their business. I go through the alley to the backyard and up a set of stairs to the upstairs apartment of the duplex. It was sunny outside so when I opened the backdoor and walked into the dark apartment it took my eyes a few seconds to adjust to the darkness.

The darkness was not the only one of my senses that needed to adjust. A familiar sound was emanating from the tv in the corner. The primeval screams of loveless coitus blared from a tv in the corner of the room.

Sandy sat at the corner of the bed, a robe she was wearing was loosely tied around her waist. Her breasts were exposed and she was pleasuring herself. My eyes half adjusted, I notice her pleasure center is not that of a traditional female, and looked a lot like mine.

I raised one hand to my shield my eyes, my other hand still holding two dogs on leash. I ran to the front of the apartment yelling “NOT OKAY, NOT OKAY, NOT OKAY!”

Sandy follows me, closing her robe as she approaches me unleashing the dogs. I tell her in no uncertain terms that what has transpired is not ok and the I need payment for the dog walking. Sandy apologizes profusely and pays me double for my trouble.

I never used craigslist after that and I will NEVER offer my dog walking service ever again. The trauma is still fresh some 12 years later.

I paid Rosetta Stone 400 bucks for a product worse than free offering on the App Store. Felt like that was a scam....

when I first got my drivers license a woman asked me for for a ride so I agreed. Then I can’t remember exactly but she needed 40 dollars to pay someone then she was going to get the rest money back from her mom. I was pretty gullible so I agreed and gave her the 40 dollars. She left her clutch wallet as collateral... anyway 15 minutes passed and I was getting nervous so I took a look in the wallet. Empty. Yikes. Feeling of dread as it was my parents money and I had to explain what happened to them. I waited a few more minutes and then started to drive away.

the she came running out waving at me. I had a huge sense of relief that I wasn’t gonna get in trouble with my parents. She told me that she just needed to go to the hospital where her mom worked and then she would pay me back. It was about 15 minutes drive. I took her over there and she got out and into the hospital and I never saw her again.

now looking back she has me take her to her dealer, use my money to buy her drugs, then drive her to the hospital to get a clean needle. Hope she is doing better...

At Christmas time, I once gave a woman $50 for gas and groceries. I realized after that she was scamming me, at the time I could afford it and if she really needed the money....  I have become an expert at recognizing scams before parting with my money. And I advise others about this too.

My rule about scams and loaning money is accepting that you will never get it back. If you're okay with that, then by all means go ahead.

The hustlers at the gas stations have gotten me a couple times.  Don't have wallet, can't get home, had a job interview or was in town for something else.  The one guy said he was a veteran so I helped him out with gas and then when I was pulling out I saw his lady friend sitting in the vehicle with a wad of cash in her hands.  The other guy slipped up when he was pumping the gas about how another person pumped the gas for him and I was like oh so you do this often.  I let him go about his way because it was the Holiday season.  But I'm not buying anyone gas from now on.

Easiest way to avoid the gas station scam is not to carry cash on you. I remember talking to my sister one time about having 60 dollars on me, not sure why it came up but it did. An addict overheard me talking unbeknownst to me and approached me with the regular sob story of a broken down car/bus money bs. I told him i didn't have any cash and he LOST it. Started yelling at me in the middle of a busy downtown street about how i had 60 on me and he only needed 20 and how I was a bad person. I was caught off guard but shrugged him off. Everyone around looked at me like I was the bad guy.

Not really a scam I guess but I got taken behind the woodshed and beaten pretty badly so I guess ill share this story of how trust left me scarred and cynical.

Let me start by saying that my wife and I never used to discuss money, (leads to arguments) we make enough so that we can spend what we want within reason and not have to worry about it too much and any big purchases we discuss, so when money comes out of the account we just assume it's the other half.

One day years ago at some point I mentioned that I needed to take out a few hundred dollars for something and my wife replies, you know I wouldn't normally say anything but why do you need more money when you took out 450 dollars yesterday, and that wouldn't be a big deal but you took out 450 dollars just 3 days ago.

I was like WHAT!!!!!!!

I haven't taken out 900 dollars in the last 4 days.

Long story short we go to the bank, they start running the video and sure enough, there is my God damned sister taking out the money both times.

Years prior my wife gave my sister her debit card and pin to buy her something at the store and now she was sneaking her card out of my house and stealing our money.

She forged multiple checks and when we tried to calculate our losses, the best guess we could come up with was around 5 to 6 thousand but thats only what we were almost certain of, it could be much higher.

Our only recourse was to press charges and since she was young and both my parents were already deceased and I knew they wouldn't want their daughter in prison I decided to eat the losses and move on.

I've never felt so betrayed or angry in my life.

Needless to say we keep much closer watch on our funds now.

I was told Extreme Skins was an awesome porn site.

14 years later and I'm still wasting hours a day on here without seeing a single boob.

Show me your tits.

They're real and their spectacular.

I've been lucky (?) to not have been scammed despite believing that most people are good. Maybe it's because I never carry cash..so I suspect my only scam story would be the girl I fell hard for in college and dated 4 years who ended being gay. Not really a scam but it felt like I should have seen the signs (tbf there really weren't any glaring signs).

Too many lap dances? Too much in the Champaign room? Yeah, those strippers will scam the money from you.

Correct, with a promise of after hours service thrown in. The good news is this incident has helped me dramatically cut back on alcohol consumption lol.

A lot of those girls have problems; so the scam away.

Best not to go to these places when drunk or if you're depressed. My bankruptcy is finally going off my credit report and sadly, at least a third of that debt was me going to those places while depressed.

Yeah, just a couple weeks ago I apparently had an alcohol-related incident...must've clicked on something on the phone resulting in a $60 purchase I have no recollection of.

Lesson learned.

So sorry to hear about the OPs loss. That sucks.

A long time ago in Paris I was passing through as a backpacker and wanted to buy a Metro ticket. Was in a hurry and there was a long line. Someone said they had an extra ticket and sold it to me. Paid the face value of something like 10 French Francs when that was cost for a pack of five. Not a big deal and meant I was out the cost of a small sandwich. But I’m still upset about it. :ols:

If someone is asking "money for something" my reaction is to give them the something instead of the money.   Like people outside a grocery store asking for money for groceries.  I will ask them what they need and offer to go in and buy it for them.  With the gas station scam, I would offer to run my CC through the pump.  One time I guy actually took me up on the offer.  in retrospect, probably just a hustle, as he was actually driving a newer car than mine ... but whatever.  Occasionally  I have given money, especially if the person is patient.  I had a long talk with a homeless guy one time, at the end I just gave him straight up cash, as he wasn't pushing me or anything, didn't seem like he was on drugs/alcohol or whatever.  Kind of almost a model homeless person, if that has any meaning.
