I remember deploying to help clean up after the 2004 quake.  At one point gaffs used for fishing were needed to pull the bodies of children out of the water.  You can’t just grab a body that has been in the water that long so we had to use the hook and were told to aim for the ribs.  There weren’t enough body bags so we had to resort to using clear trash bags.

The 2,963 m (9,721 ft) high Merapi is one of Indonesia‘s most active volcanoes and is already on the country’s second highest alert level.

Dozens of people are missing and feared dead after a piece of a Himalayan glacier fell into a river and triggered a huge flood in northern India.

The floodwaters burst open a dam and a deluge of water poured through a valley in the state of Uttarakhand.

Villages have been evacuated, but officials warned more than 125 people may have been caught in the torrent.

Video showed the floodwater barrelling through the area, leaving destruction in its wake.

Powerful Earthquake Strikes Japan

A large earthquake shook a broad area across eastern Japan late Saturday night, with its epicenter off the coast of Fukushima, near where three nuclear reactors melted down after a quake and tsunami nearly 10 years ago.

The earthquake left nearly a million households without power across the Fukushima region and forced the closure of roads and suspension of train services. While rattled residents braced for aftershocks, a landslide cut off a chunk of a main artery through Fukushima Prefecture.

Japan’s meteorological service reported the quake’s magnitude as 7.3, up from the initial assessment of 7.1, but said there was no danger of a tsunami.

Etna spews smoke and ashes in spectacular new eruption

etnaisoneoft.jpg

Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes, belched smoke and ashes in a new eruption on Tuesday, but Italian authorities said it posed no danger to the surrounding villages.

"We've seen worse," the head of the INGV National Institute for Geophysics and Vulcanology in the nearby city of Catania, Stefano Branco, told Italian news agency AGI.

Estimating that the eruption from Etna's southeastern crater began late Tuesday afternoon, Branco insisted that the latest burst of activity was "not at all worrying".

Nevertheless, with small stones and ashes raining down, authorities decided to close Catania's international airport.

4.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Oklahoma, the state's biggest in 2021

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Oklahoma on Friday, according to reports by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck 6 kilometers, or roughly 3.7 miles, away from the town of Manchester. Since Manchester sits close to the Kansas-Oklahoma state line, tremors radiated over state lines, affecting the southwestern most region of Wichita.

Officials report that the quake occurred at 7:56 am CST. No injuries or damage have been reported.

The depth of the quake was 7 kilometers below the Earth’s surface. Local outlets report that the seismic shakes lasted around 10 seconds.

So far, more than 1,900 people submitted responses to the USGS reporting some level of having felt the earthquake, with responses ranging from Kansas to Oklahoma. Some responses felt weak tremors north of Wichita past Salina and as far south as Oklahoma City.

Mosquito swarm makes tornado-like formation in Argentina

Motorists in Argentina were faced with a confronting sight as they drove towards what appeared to be a forming tornado recently – but on closer inspection, it was actually something else entirely.

Footage filmed by a person driving along Route 74 between General Madariaga and Pinamar revealed the dark tornado-like formation was actually a huge swarm of mosquitoes.

“It’s getting bigger and bigger, I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” the person filming says, according to local media reports.

The video was shared online where it quickly went viral, attracting horrified reactions from social media users.

The bizarre scenes occurred after the Buenos Aires region of Argentina recently saw an explosion of mosquitoes after consistent heavy rains.

Indonesia's Sinabung Volcano spews high column of ash

Indonesia’s Mount Sinabung was erupting Tuesday, sending volcanic materials as high as 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) into the sky and depositing ash on nearby villages.

Activity at the volcano in North Sumatra province increased over the past week, with authorities recording 13 times when it released ash clouds.

There have been no fresh evacuations due to the activity and no reports of disruptions to flights in the region.

The 2,600-metre (8,530-feet) Sinabung was dormant for four centuries before erupting in 2010, killing two people. Another eruption in 2014 killed 17 people, while seven died in a 2016 eruption.

Iceland volcanic eruption 'imminent' after 17,000 earthquakes in past week

Even for a volcanic island accustomed to the occasional tremor, this has been an unusual week for Iceland.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, around 17,000 earthquakes have hit the south-western region of Reykjanes over the past week.

The largest quake, a magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale, occurred on the morning of February 24.

"It is very unusual to feel the Earth shake 24 hours a day for a whole week. It makes you feel very small and powerless against nature."

"We are battling with the 'why' at the moment. Why is this happening?

"It is very likely that we have an intrusion of magma into the [Earth's] crust there.

"It has definitely moved closer to the surface, but we are trying to figure out if it's moving even closer to it."

With multiple volcanoes in the area, local officials have warned that an eruption could be imminent.

A plague of mice:

‘The ground is just moving with thousands of mice’: Australia hit by rodent plague

The worst plague of mice in decades has overtaken a number of rural communities in New South Wales, Australia.

The plague follows a bumper grain harvest and threatens to destroy hay bales made by farmers for the winter.

A video filmed in the town of Gilgandra shows thousands of rodents swarming around a farm.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC), farmer Ron Mckay said: “At night the ground is just moving with thousands and thousands of mice just running around.”
