TheGreatBuzz
I remember deploying to help clean up after the 2004 quake. At one point gaffs used for fishing were needed to pull the bodies of children out of the water. You can’t just grab a body that has been in the water that long so we had to use the hook and were told to aim for the ribs. There weren’t enough body bags so we had to resort to using clear trash bags.
China
Indonesia on Second Highest Alert Level After Mt Merapi Erupts Jakarta: Indonesia‘s Mount Merapi volcano on Java island erupted on Wednesday, sending up a cloud of ash and prompting authorities to warn of the risk of lava flows reaching roads, officials said. China
Powerful Earthquake Strikes Japan A large earthquake shook a broad area across eastern Japan late Saturday night, with its epicenter off the coast of Fukushima, near where three nuclear reactors melted down after a quake and tsunami nearly 10 years ago. The earthquake left nearly a million households without power across the Fukushima region and forced the closure of roads and suspension of train services. While rattled residents braced for aftershocks, a landslide cut off a chunk of a main artery through Fukushima Prefecture. Japan’s meteorological service reported the quake’s magnitude as 7.3, up from the initial assessment of 7.1, but said there was no danger of a tsunami. "We've seen worse," the head of the INGV National Institute for Geophysics and Vulcanology in the nearby city of Catania, Stefano Branco, told Italian news agency AGI. Estimating that the eruption from Etna's southeastern crater began late Tuesday afternoon, Branco insisted that the latest burst of activity was "not at all worrying". Nevertheless, with small stones and ashes raining down, authorities decided to close Catania's international airport. China
Iceland volcanic eruption 'imminent' after 17,000 earthquakes in past week Even for a volcanic island accustomed to the occasional tremor, this has been an unusual week for Iceland. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, around 17,000 earthquakes have hit the south-western region of Reykjanes over the past week. The largest quake, a magnitude 5.6 on the Richter scale, occurred on the morning of February 24. "It is very unusual to feel the Earth shake 24 hours a day for a whole week. It makes you feel very small and powerless against nature." "We are battling with the 'why' at the moment. Why is this happening? "It is very likely that we have an intrusion of magma into the [Earth's] crust there. "It has definitely moved closer to the surface, but we are trying to figure out if it's moving even closer to it." With multiple volcanoes in the area, local officials have warned that an eruption could be imminent.
