jonjeff
Why does it seem as if every team but the Redskins has a darkhorse candidate step in at QB with great sucess? Tom Bradey steps in for Drew Bledsoe and never gives up the starting spot. Aaron Brooks steps in for Jeff Blake and the Saints are still contending for a playoff spot. Jeff Garcia takes over for Steve Young and the Niners are back near the top in the NFC. It just seems as if you look around and other teams find that diamond in the rough at QB. The Skins meanwhile have a revolving door at the position that means the most on the field. One year this guy, the next year this guy, and the following year someone else. If we ever are to be sucessful again we must close this revolving door once and for all. Is Rosenfels the QB that could step in a be the man? Its just very frustrating to be in this position year in and year out. Until we solve this problem, the playoffs will be a long shot.
@DCGoldPants
other teams have QB's that do it. The Skins have CB's that do it. For almost 20 years now we've always had at least 2 great CB who nobody worried about that side of the field or the man he was covering. That WR was not going to have a career day. Now we have 3 of those guys and no QB. It's just our fate my friend. ------------------
jonjeff
I know it would make a great trivia question if someone could name all the quarterbacks that have started a Redskins game since Joe Theisman ended his career that night against the Giants. I know I saw the first one the following week at Pittsburgh. Jay Schroeder took over the next week against the Steelers and lead the Skins to a victory. I sat in section 666, two rows from the top of Three Rivers Stadium that day. The Steeler fans were shocked they lost to a backup QB. I gotta admit, I was a little suprised too! Anybody out there care to take a crack at the other 557 QB's that have started for the Skins since Theisman's broken leg? Good luck!!!
bulldog
nobody figured that Brady would exhibit the poise and maturity he has or else he would have been taken long before the #6 round Bellichick is smiling because he knows he and the personnel department got lucky for a change.......... One of the reasons some of us don't have confidence in the Redskins ability to upgrade at quarterback by selecting a younger player is the team simply does not have anyone on the staff with the experience to nurture a younger passer. You know that SF, based on its history, has an unbeatable system based on the personal tutoring of Walsh and now Marriuci. While Jeff Garcia per se may be a surprise, it is not surprising that the 49ers were able to develop a qb in house to take over for Steve Young. Who did Marty bring here to do that? His son Brian? Let me stop laughing now, okay......No fuzzy faced 27 year old kid is going to step in and take a guy like Rosenfels with all his mechanical flaws and turn him into a capable NFL starter. The younger Schottenheimer's NFL resume consists of 1 year of experience as a "quality assistant" which was probably something like loading game films of opposing defenses for Dick Vermei's coaches meetings with the Rams. Now, doesn't that sound like a "son-in-law" or "crony" job to you? I would never have guessed based on that that Marty and Dick play golf in the offseason together
kleese
OK, here's a shot: Shcroeder Doug Williams Cary Conklin Mark Rypien Rich Gannon John Friesz Heath Shuler Gus Frerotte Brad Johnson Jeff George Tony Banks Jeff Hostetler Stan Humphries That's my best shot-- if there are any more, I can't think of them right now. Not exactly a "who's who" of great field generals.
kleese
Just thought of one more-- Jeff Rutledge
Guest Trevor
Might want to add Trent Green to that list.
jonjeff
Don't forget our replacement QB's that led our strike team to a Monday night victory over the Cowboys. Didn't we have Jeff Rupport(name??), and Tony Robinson?
Mickalino
That would be Ed Rubpert

Brave
Technically, Mitchell didn't start did he? Oh hell, throw him in there anyway. That's quite a list. It makes me sad.
bulldog
why sad, isn't Gannon a 3-time pro bowler? Oh, yeah, I forgot he doesn't play here anymore does he?
VoR
Was it wise to take Sage instead of Mike McMahon? McMahon just led Detroit to their first victory while Sage's claim to fame was sticking "HE HATE ME" on the back of Stephen Davis' jersey. Time will tell... @DCGoldPants
If we had drafted McMahon....he would be sitting still also. Detroit was just unlucky all year and finally they went a different route than Marty would......I think. ------------------
TennesseeCarl
Weinke was the guy we needed, but he'd been taken about 3 picks before Sage. I liked Weinke higher in the draft than he went...and I still think the Panthers will benefit greatly from this dismal year. The fact is, Sage really didn't play all that much better than Todd Husak in preseason. But he's a Marty pick so as between the two, guess who stays. I'm guessing we don't have another Brady. But we won't know until next preseason.
Mickalino
Weinke was a better option ? You mean the dude who led the league in INT's, last time I checked ?
indyskinsfan
When I saw Sage, I saw anxiousness to show what he could do and surprisingly, it was only the "typical" rookie mistakes in exhibition games. He did show that he could "feel" the rush more and react to checkdowns quicker than our current starter. We don't look at him enough and deep down, he's gonna' probably do very well - when he leaves us. That's our history over the last 8 years. Maybe it's time it changed. The one position that has been kicking our a** is QB. I remember going through this with defensive players, now where in better condition, so just maybe....... @DCGoldPants
Weinke is older than Banks and really, he's worse. He has so little time to learn and become a really good QB. He better hope that he can make enough as a career backup so he won't be calling FSU games for the ACC Television network for $$. ------------------
Brave
"...so he won't be calling FSU games for the ACC Television network for $$." - Bufford Doesn't sound like a bad job to me ... but I suppose it's all relative, right? If I was a starting QB in the NFL it might not seem so attractive.
bulldog
George Seifert has been a total disaster in Carolina as the GM. Like Ditka in New Orleans he has made some moves that are basically gambles and few of them have paid off. Weinke is 29 and may yet develop into a decent NFL player, quarterbacks do play now until their late 30's if healthy. Just look at Vinny Testaverde and Rich Gannon. Remember also that Brad Johnson sat on the bench for his first 5 years in the NFL and didn't start until he was 27 or 28. Not that he is the best qb around, but he has put up solid numbers in a couple of good seasons for Minnesota and Washington. But Weinke is not going to turn into a franchise quarterback like Manning or Culpepper. He just doesn't have the skills or the refinement to his game. MacMahon was an interesting player and to his credit Chris Mortenson thought whoever got Mike would get a diamond in the rough. I agree that MacMahon would have been buried here in DC just as Rosenfels has been. Marty like George Allen goes with a veteran at qb. He has never had a rookie starter as far as I know. In fact he has consistently traded or gone after veterans to replace veterans.
Darth Tater
Best thing for Sage might have been to get cut then picked up by somebody like St Louis as a backup for a couple of years. At that time, he'd probably be able to sign for big bucks and may have had a decent career
OrangeSkin
Seifert, Ditka, both disasters as GMs. Sound familiar? We need to get a GM and fast, or otherwise, we'll be having one of those "coaches that can't handle the GM position screws the franchise for years to come," situations.
