clskinsfan
If mods feel this is better placed in Tailgate than I understand. Now that we have official dates for training camp to start I wanted to start a thread to discuss the NFL/Teams/Players plans on how they plan to run it safely. We are already seeing some players concerned about showing up and potentially infecting their families: Washington Opt outs: Caleb Brantley Josh Harvey Clemons There is currently NO PLAN in place from the NFL as far as I can tell. It appears maybe each team will be allowed to set their own plan based on the level of outbreak in their particular area? NFLPA and the NFL are still working out the details on testing protocol and other issues with the virus. Including testing every other day it seems. But have already told teams that training camps will open on time: https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/nation-world/nfl-training-camps-to-open-on-time/507-a38f66a0-d546-4c83-ab8b-8373a6f38cfc The other part of the equation is what to do at the stadiums. Will the games be fanless like the PGA is playing right now? Or will they attempt some form of social distancing? (Not that that would be a problem at Fedex) It will be very interesting to see how many players decide not to play this year. And could make for a sleeper team winning this year. Koolblue13
If they hardly care about wide spread concussions, sexual harassing, women abuse, racism, educational fraud, etc, theyre obviously not going to care about Covid. Its not like we're talking about smoking a joint. Lol
COWBOY-KILLA-
This is gonna be a unique season in the NFL man. Not sure they are gonna be able to make through the whole season, especially if the deaths continue to rise. There has to be uniform guidelines and rules in place. If we go the “State Strategy” as we’ve done in the US, it could unravel rather quickly without a bubble type setting. It’s crazy TC is two weeks away. actorguy1
If the NFL decided to guarantee that the players would receive their full salaries this season and not drop the salary cap a lot next season then the players wouldn't be so worried about Covid-19. This is predominantly about money.

bowhunter
My pharmacy is close quarters with all of my staff running to and fro shoulder to shoulder. Knowing full well that we're the first place sick people go. Handing us their germ ridden rx. If they think an NFL lockerroom is a breeding ground for disease, they haven't seen nuttin yet. "Opting out" would be nice, but yeah. I'm of the opinion that if we're essential and are truly exposed to the virus, they shouldn't have an issue playing with a face shield. Cooleyfan1993
Will nfl touchdown celebrations be allowed under the COVID-19 NFL regulations? I know Baseball dugout celebrations can’t happen (although i see that Aaron Judge was seen high fiving players yesterday....)

88Comrade2000
Let's see if they actually start on time. Have we even signed Chase yet? I think some owners would love to cancel the season. There are some owners who want the full impact of covid losses now and next year. I read that could be a 70 million cap reduction for 2021. That isn't happening. To many teams would have to pair their roster down. I think training camp doesn't start on time.

And a surprising amount of other first rounders haven't either. Not sure what the specific reason is. 11 hours ago, Rdskns2000 said: I think training camp doesn't start on time. Players start reporting today (for two teams) and for everyone else tomorrow. Presumably this isnt the start of camp yet but getting testing in right? If we assume many players test positive, then yeah you're right. Otherwise I don't think the NFL wants to change much.

Respect for working in a pharmacy through all this. I have a shop that has a handful of customers per day, but those are mostly older customers who won't come out unless they feel healthy. I personally disagree about the "if I'm essential and have to work, they should work too" line of thought. You are essential. My shop repairs computers and phones, so I like to think I'm kind of essential too. Football players are not essential. We have lived 5 months without football already, why do we need to add sports fans and players to the list of needlessly infected people? Sports are quite honestly the most unimportant jobs in existence. I don't care about that all for their own welfare. It's for the welfare of everyone surrounding them, including the people in the hospitals that will have to treat them if they develop severe infections. clskinsfan
Opt out deadline for players is August 1st at 5:00 PM. If a player opts out it is irrevocable for the 2020 season. Thus once a player opts out they will be out for the entire season. A player who opts out will have his contract toll for a full year. He will not receive his base salary or any other payments scheduled to be earned after the date of the opt out, and he will not earn a benefit credit or an accrued season. In 2021, his contract will be reinstated. If he “timely reports for all required activities” in 2021, the opt out will not become a breach of his 2020 contract, which “will not subject him to discipline or forfeiture, will not void any bonuses or guarantees or have any other adverse consequences beyond those set forth herein.” That’s an important provision. The player who opts out in 2020 can’t hold out or otherwise breach his contract in 2021; if he does, his opt out becomes a breach of his contract, after the fact. The player who opts out will receive a $150,000 stipend for 2020 — minus any amounts already received by the player in 2020. The balance (up to $150,000) would be treated as an advance on the player’s 2021 base salary. (This implies that players not under contract for 2021 would not be eligible for the stipend.) https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/07/18/nfls-opt-out-offer-carries-a-renegotiation-loophole/
CurseReversed
Millions of people are working in US. Millions more shopping, handling money, merchandise and going about their daily business. There are ways to mitigate risk but at some point you have to realize there is only so much you can control. NFL players practicing and playing is not some inherently high risk activity relative to what anyone else is doing every day. Professional athletes are also at a low risk of having serious symptoms. Some of these guys are being a little melodramatic if you ask me. jJust last night I was at a packed casino and everyone was runnning around with masks and playing behind plexiglass. Meanwhile everyone is handling poker chips and cash and touching cards and slot machines that have been touched by thousands of people. Its getting a little ridiculous what people are expecting to protect them. The cat is out of the bag.

I can't speak to that, but I have decided to opt out of being a player for the NFL this year. Besides COVID, myself being short, slow, and nonathletic has made it obvious I need to sit out a year. On to 2021.

CurseReversed
Just curious but does anyone know if there have been any professional athletes in any of the major sports who have got very sick or died of covid?
