Lang / Wynn even tradeoff ??

Comparing Lang and Wynn, the defensive linemen starters we lost and picked up, seems we have a lot of eerie similarities :

1) Both can play End and Tackle positions.

2) Both came into the league the same year in 1997, so they have the same experience, and roughly same age.

3) They're almost exactly the same size : Lang is 6-4, 281. Wynn is 6-3, 280.

4) Both play the run better than they do the pass.

5) Both play the Tackle position better than they do the End.

6) As a Tackle, they are both undersized, however they're also both quicker than most DT's.

7) Both have gradually improved over their 1st five seasons, and while neither will be a great lineman, they both are already solid ones.

Lang and Wynn differ in their basic style of play, or approach. But as far as their output and production they are highly similar. It seems we broke even in giving up Lang and signing Wynn. Does anyone think differently, that we're better off or worse off with Wynn, as opposed to Lang ?

[ March 29, 2002, 11:52 PM: Message edited by: Mick ]

as stated - too early to tell. however, we do know that marvin's defense is predicated on stopping the run first and not generating an overwhelming pass rush. we all know that Lang sometimes landed up 5 yards down field when playing tackle because he was undersized. he compensated by reving his motor to overdrive on every play. my assessment is that this is an even swap based on talent, but that we come out ahead - way ahead - within the context of lewis' system because Wynn is a firmer foundation when moved inside against the run. time will tell.

If you look at what Lang is making in Cleveland and what we are paying Wynn ... I guess you'd have to say, all things being equal (or close to equal), that we are making out better.

Lang, for all his mediocre stats, had a knack for big plays. Interceptions, tackles, pressures. Things that don't always impress on the stat sheet. Wynn reportedly has a knack for not being noticed, but after it's all said and done appears to have played well.

For the difference in money ... we'll do fine with Wynn.

I remember inklings that the Skins were looking at drafting Wynn with the 17th pick in 1997. My prediction back then was Kenny Holmes. We ended up taking Lang at #17. Holmes went to the Oilers at #18 and Wynn went at #21 to the Jags.

Who went at #16? WR Reidel Anthony to the Bucs. A little ironic, eh?

Here's a look at the 1st round of the 1997 draft.

1. Rams: Orlando Pace, OL, Ohio State
(From the Jets)

2. Raiders: Darrell Russell, DL, USC
(From the Saints)

3. Seahawks: Shawn Springs, DB, Ohio State
(From the Falcons)

4. Falcons: Michael Booker, DB, Nebraska
(From the Bears through Seattle)

12. Bucs: Warrick Dunn, RB, Florida State
(From the Seahawks)

13. Interesting.

Looking back, you'd have to say the best pick of the draft was Gonzalez vy the Chiefs at #13.

The worst pick? That's an easy one. Rae Carruth by the Panthers at #27, though I must admit I don't know what Farrior has done since and he was a higher pick.

When the signing first came out and I heard $20 mil deal I thought we got burned. After learning that we only gave a $3.5 mil signing bonus i was ecstatic.

As others have mentioned Lang flashes big playt ability much like Shawn Barber did but neither player was down to down consistent. Lewis seems to prefer players that give you a good solid, perhaps even workmanlike, effort for 60 minutes.

Wynn is a better fit for our defensive scheme than Lang would have been. Advantage Redskins.

And what about David LaFleur by Dallas at #22? My personal feeling is you don't draft a TE in the first round. Tony Gonzales is an exception to the rule and oddly enough, like in 1997, two TE's could go in the 1st round this year too.

I guess it depends on the system. Some coaches feel the TE is an intergral part of their system and other coaches look at the TE as a blocker who can occasionally sneak out and catch one every now and then. He's basically an offensive lineman with good hands.

Marty Schottenheimer was the Chiefs' HC in 1997 when Gonzales was drafted. Check out the blurb below about Jeff George courtesy of a 1997 IIS sports article.

"The Chiefs off-season has been inactive. The only signings made was a contract extension of Marty Schottenheimer. They tried to sign free agent Jeff George, but were beaten out by the Raiders. Talented defensive players, Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas, will be free agents. The Chiefs are unlikely to resign them both, and it looks like Neil Smith will not be playing for the Chiefs next season. After an impressive career, Marcus Allen has announced that this will be his last year in the NFL. Steve Bono has demanded to be released or traded in the off-season and the Chiefs will oblige."

What really jumps out at me from that draft are all of the DBs taken very high who are at best "OK" starting CBs.

#5. Bryant Westbrook
#9 Tom Knight
#11 Michael Booker
#24 Chad Scott
#29 Chris Cantry (????? What happened to this guy????)

Obviously Champ walks all over these kids, and I would argue that Smooty does too. Man, I hope we get better value for our 1st rounder this year than these guys did.

Wynn vs. Lang is a dead even trade.

I do still think that we're looking at a top line DT to still come on board. With the scheme that Lewis runs, I don't think that he's looking at an undersized guy to start beside Wilkinson.

Wynn will be the left side starter, with Coleman on the right (I do think that he will restructure), and Smith coming in for passing downs. Coleman may flip left side on passing downs.

Overall, a lot more rotation than last year.

In terms of the '97 draft, the worst pick may be Reinard Wilson (WHO?) or Yatil Green (didn't last longer than a cup of coffee). Although I do agree that LaFleur was a reach... typical Cowboys... hey wasn't he the guy who worked out with Aikman, and had Aikman saying "you gotta draft this guy"?

Being a Jaguar fan as well (a few of you from another board can attest to this, I believe), I think I'm qualified to answer this honestly. I'll give you the short answer:

Taking into account pay and play, we got the better end of the deal for what we needed out of a player. Fact of the matter is, Wynn panned out less for the Jaguars, but had better competition than Lang, so didn't get the snaps Lang did. But, this past year, he showed how much he's improved since ND. He's improving immensely and rapidly as a pass-rusher, and is twice as stout against the run as Lang is. Renaldo Wynn is a better football player than Kenard Lang, and will continue to improve with Lewis as the DC.

I do believe that his days as an NFL player are over. And that's at a time when he seemed to be hitting his stride as a player.

More food for thought from PFW:

quote:
Redskins sign ex-Jaguars DL Renaldo Wynn
Washington added to a strong defense by signing Wynn to a six-year, $21 million deal with a signing bonus of more than $3.5 million. Wynn, 27, started 16 games last season and had a career-high five sacks. He is known as a solid run stopper. Wynn, 27, played his first five years in Jacksonville.

Buchsbaum: In Wynn, the Redskins are getting a solid defensive lineman who has improved every year since coming into the league as a first-round pick out of Notre Dame. However, he will never be a great one. As an end, Wynn has good strength and has improved, but he doesn’t have the great edge quickness to be a top pass rusher. As a tackle, he’s quicker than most and a good athlete but doesn’t have the bulk strength to be an overpowering player. However, with a power player like Dan Wilkinson next to him, Wynn could play tackle. On the other hand, his best position probably is right defensive end in a 4-3 defense.

[ April 01, 2002, 12:33 AM: Message edited by: redman ]
