BBC: China pneumonia outbreak: COVID-19 Global Pandemic

The rising numbers doesn't mean much right now to be honest. As someone who lives in NY tests are just recently (this week) becoming steadily available. Obviously, the more testing you do the more the numbers are going to rise.

I think almost every country's numbers are MUCH higher for being COVID-19 positive than the reports indicate. Hospitalizations rise with the number of people who are confirmed.

the spike in cases is expected and easily explained by the testing backlog

the deaths and hospitalizations and need to dispatch a naval hospital ship already... that's just confirming what many of us have been saying would happen for a while now.

Hospitalizations spike because they are severe cases. They aren’t going to take up a valuable bed unless the patient needs it. That’s not indicative of a testing increase being responsible for the case increase. That’s indicative of a massive number of infected people in the state.

Just extrapolating some back of napkin numbers. Estimates are 10% of cases result in hospitalization. Also that it’s *roughly* two weeks from infection date to hospitalization date. And case doubling every 4 days.

500 hospitalizations today means 5,000 infections two weeks ago.  Doubling rate means there were 10k cases 10 days ago, 20k six days ago, 40k two days ago, and 80k two days from now. With a 10% hospitalization rate.

We’re gonna need more hospital ships.

I'm just glad everyone (on the political front at least) finally seem to be taking this seriously.  One of the historian on MSNBC compared this to the challenges facing the country during WWII.  Same type of response is going to be needed.

CMS is going to direct hospitals to stop all non-essential surgeries, medical and dental procedures

For those that don't understand, this is huge. Surgeries are to hospitals what NCAA basketball and football are to NCAA sports; they support the system. Hospitals mostly make their money from surgeries. Surgeons get away with a lot more **** than anyone else in the hospital politics because they're the money makers.

Hospitals will be (and have been) reluctant to shut those down because of that fact. it's wrong, you know it's wrong, but this is how people behave.

Direction from the federal government to shut it down and shut it down now takes that decision making away from the hospital. It allows members of their leadership team, that have asking to implement this for days/weeks now and have been shot down because of the money aspect, to finally start prepping their surgical units (including staff) for how to take care of COVID-19 patients.

Why do people watch these press conferences and comment on Trump having the correct tone? He's more somber but he's still spewing bull****. How are people being confided by this?

He blamed this mess on Obamas admin and said that its a fact of life that the well connected get better treatment. Crazy ****.

But he sounds less like a douche bag so lets congratulate him. Ill never understand it.

If you start with the premise that people are stupid, it clears things up pretty quick

Has anyone asked him about Fox News’ early handling of this, the impact of his derision of news outlets, and the polls showing the percentage of people that are taking it seriously/not seriously among political demographics?

Probably a waste of time I guess....

They seem to be tackling one or two major controversial per press conference.  Why he keeps calling it Chinese Virus came up, and he said it was to defend America from the propaganda China is putting out that US made it. No one made it, it came from China.  I don't agree with still calling it that, that's just his reasoning
