Iowa homeowner says swastikas, Confederate flags are not racist

Des Moines, Iowa - A homeowner living next to an elementary school in Iowa is facing backlash for painting Confederate battle flags and swastikas on pallets around his property. The symbols are clearly visible from the school.

"It's a free country," William Stark said. "I'll put it out there if I want to."

He added that people shouldn't construe the painted pallets as racist.

But Morris Elementary in Des Moines disagreed and released a statement denouncing Stark's display. School officials say the students, who are about 60% nonwhite, see the symbols when arriving and leaving the school and even from the playground.

"They don't know their history, evidently," Stark said. "That's the only reason I can think of that they can think anything bad about it—they don't know their history."

Meg Viola, a school parent, said the swastika is a symbol of white supremacism and is racist, offensive, and disgusting.

"It'd really be nice if they just take the stuff down," Viola said.

But Stark said he has no plans to do so.

City officials labeled his property a nuisance earlier this year.

And in recent news...

'Nazi scum' graffiti discovered at home of man who displayed swastika, Confederate flags

Vandalism calling a Des Moines man “Nazi scum” was found Wednesday at a home that displayed a painting of a swastika and Confederate flags.

William Stark displayed six wooden pallets painted as various flags in front of his home in the 6000 block of Southwest 15th Street. One was a “German war flag” with the swastika on it. Others included Confederate flags, a “back the blue” flag supporting law enforcement officers, an American flag and a combination U.S.-Confederate flag.

Stark's house shares a property line with Morris Elementary School and sits within eyesight of the school's front entrance. A playground at the school borders the side of Stark's home.

Spray-painted graffiti covered several pallets in Stark's yard Wednesday afternoon. A vandal wrote "Nazi Scum" on a trailer and a pickup truck, as well.

Is this guy an Iowa native? Last I checked Iowa isn't even a southern state so what is his personal affinity to the confederate flag in the first place?

He also added that “Lincoln was a Republican”, “Dems started the KKK and are the real racists” and “Planned Parenthood is a deep state conspiracy to promote black genocide”.

He then logged on to ExtremeSkins and spent the rest of his day in the Boeing 737 thread defining his expertise regarding “pilot error”.

Oh the irony of someone displaying Lee's Battle Flag thinking it's the Confederate flag complaining about others not knowing their history...

Lee's flag was square.

From the incredibly tiny amount of reading I've done, the only time a rectangular version was flown during the Civil War, was as a battle ensign on two ships of the Confederate Navy.

You can drive through the rural portions of any part of this country and find countless ****buckets displaying the confederate flag.

i assume this post became its own thread because 'tis the season to enjoy a little holiday cheer by properly mocking the mindless malevolent meatsacks who make up the mass of trump's perpetually lying and aggrieved republican party....this guy and his ilk render the term "white supremacy" as unintentionally ironic as "intelligent design" and "pro-life"

All his neighbors should surround him with rainbow flags.

I would build a 10 foot tall spite fence on the edge of the school's lot with a tasteful mural painted on the side facing away from the school and toward this guy's property.  And by "tasteful" I mean "pornographic and interracial."

It would also include the text "It's a free country.  We'll put it out there if we want to.

Just pointing out, private citizens are permitted to express political opinions, including controversial (or moronic) ones.  Government institutions are not.

"Neighbors", I'm cool with, though.

I might even refer to them as "economically anxious".  Dude is obviously depressing home values in the neighborhood.

I also have a mental image of a school field trip.  "See students?  This is what stupid racists look like."  Maybe even hold some history lessons there.

True.  But the point would be made during the time it is up and before an injunction could be issued to have it removed.  It would also (hopefully) not be removed due to being political in nature, but for being far beyond the bounds of decency.  :)

I used to travel quite a bit to the rural areas of my state and I saw a lot of that crap. I’d save all my trash to provide a nice gift on their front lawn on my way out. I’ve also been known to water the flowers at some of the confederate traitors graveyards. I always dreamed of burning or otherwise destroying one of those sons of confederate veterans billboards but didn’t have the cojones.

Good point.  The sheer number of racist white people out there that believe in race "science" hogwash that says that white people are smarter than the other races gives proof to the lie of that claim.

Race supremacy has always been stupid, and not just because ignorant yokels are blind to irony.

it’s a bit disheartening that we still accept race is a real thing.  Some primordial racists latched onto an arbitrary physical characteristic that differentiated them at the time, and decided that skin color was the thing that made them somehow better than others.  Imagine if they had settled on the abundance of body hair instead.  Picture modern man proudly displaying their furry backs as a sign of their inherent superiority.  Its as significant as skin color, and overtime would have accumulated as much historical baggage as race has today.

At some point we have to stop playing along with this nonsense and start tearing down the construct of race entirely.  Maybe in a few hundred years or so.

Fun side note: A lot of the people I have had conversations with that believe in race science dont believe in any kind of climate science at all. And thats just the easy one to pick apart cause they admit it. But if you really ask them and they are ****y enough to try and answer, they dont even understand the statistics they put forward.

Like I got a guy who believes that stats prove, genetically, that black people are more violent but doesn't believe dinosaurs are real at all cause his second favorite book doesnt say they are. I bet you can guess his first fav.

i was thinking of putting this in the white nationalist/charlottesville thread, but it fits here in the same spirit

when i was a little kid i really liked the song  from the tv show "johnny yuma--the rebel" (old johnny cash) and thought the story it told (lionizing confederate soldiers) was so cool and would sing it...well, i was a kid and it is a cool song other than being a disservice to reality

(edit---i knew i was off---originally i said it was about a johnny horton song named "johnny reb", then i thought, no, you got that mixed up, so i changed it  (i knew/liked the cash song too) but it actually was the johnny horton song)

knowing better now, it gives me great pleasure to introduce this article with a hearty "**** you johnny reb" :)

Med students photographed at plantation: We are our ancestors' wildest dreams

Quote

Russell Ledet and classmates from Tulane University planned the trip and photos at the Whitney Plantation in Edgard with the hope that others would be inspired by the images.

"Just thinking about being a black doctor in America. I think more people should see this," Ledet, 33, told NBC News.

n Saturday, 16 members of Tulane's Student National Medical Association made the trip from New Orleans to the former plantation, which is about 50 miles west. "Seeing that many black students in training in one photo was striking. In a place that was dedicated to our ancestors and their struggles," Labat, 24, said. "We knew this photo was going to make people stop ... and really think. I can say for myself, I definitely got emotional throughout this experience."

Labat shared an image of 15 of the students outside the slave quarters on Twitter that has since gone viral, garnering more than 17,000 retweets and more than 74,000 likes. "Standing in front of the slave quarters of our ancestors, at The Whitney Plantation, with my medical school classmates. We are truly our ancestors' wildest dreams," Labat wrote on Twitter. Ledet hopes that message gets to those who feel a lack of representation in and out of the classroom.

"There are babies, kids in school right now, and they don't have these images in their classrooms," he said. "They don't have the image of someone black in a white coat. The first thing they see is a white guy."

"These kids need somebody who looks like them in an image in their classroom," Ledet said. "When that's in their mind. That's where their memories come from. They can be me."

"You will rarely find an image of black medical students in a classroom, regardless of the makeup of the kids in the classroom," Ledet said. "That's our goal now, to get 100,000 of these pictures framed, and put them in classrooms."

Someone ought to light his house on fire, and then tell him it's not burning.
I mean, if he can get out.

Maybe someone ought to tell him that there aren't any nails holding his doors shut while he screams. Tell him they are just "love fasteners"

Sorry, no patience left for these assholes.
