Redskins 2004 and Spurrier

Unfortunately, I watched the game this past Sunday because I live in Texas and had no other choice. Well, I did have a choice and my choice was to give Steve Spurrier one last evaluation in the progress department.

GRADE: F

The fact remains, Spurrier stinks, his assistants stinks and the entire team stinks due to coaching, Period. I myself, along with the rest of you guys have no more excuses to cover up the lousy coaching. I read one post were Jbooma gave the names of the only players we have that are talented on the team. Well news flash Jbooma, that's alot of talent on one team compared to some other teams in the NFL.

Example: The Cowboys. IMO, they don't have that much talent either on both sides of the ball other than R. Williams, Newman, Woodson, Coakley and maybe a few others on the offense like A. Bryant, T.Glenn and Joey Galloway. Who else did I leave out? Flozell and L.Allen. Even some of those guys on offense aren't world beaters and L. Allen is on the decline and injury prone. Furthermore, the receivers don't have a world class QB throwing the ball to them either. So my point is, add up the number of talented players we have on the Redskins and compare that to the # of talent on the Cowboys. It's not that big of a diffrence. But the sad part is, I could possibly make the same case for a number of other teams as well. But the one common denominator is coaching.

I don't think the Bengals have more talent than we do on the Redskins, and I could be wrong. But again, the one common denominator "COACH".

The only reason I can see Danny Snyder retaining Steve Spurrier is due to his word and promise. Danny's word that he'll for once go with the grain and reatain his coach for the full duration of the contract. Other than that, Steve Spurrier's Arse would be outta here. How can you have confidence in a coach that has all the weapons to succeed on offense, but can't display the talent he has and can't muster up any points in a number of games against quality defenses. How can you tell me form watching the game yesterday that any owner could be optimistic about the following year retaining the same lousy coach.

We witnessed 2 years of the same lousy play on offense and basicly the same BS as an entire team. Also, what's so horrid is, they're not getting any better, they seem to be getting worse. Sh!t, to be honestly, the team looked and played better when the OC was calling the plays. But once Spurrier got the itch to start play calling again, Sh!t hit the fan. Even the commentators yesterday were hashing about, "Why did they stop running the ball" when they were getting adequate yardage in the first half. No! Spurrier had to start throwing the ball that lead to Newman getting 3 picks. Well! it wasn't Spurrier throwing the ball, but the play changed on one of newmans picks after Cartwright was running pretty well. How come guys like Parcells can stick to the run when things are going in the running favor? Why is it Spurrier insists on throwing when the running game is working, it always seems to turn into disaster when he does that. "Mind Boggling"

The players, some players like Champ and Lavar will be playing hard ball from here on out. Champ turned down his intial contract offer, now lavar. I guess they're saying if i'm gonna play for a bone headed lousy coach. Than I might as well get paid well while doing it. No one wants to play for a lousy team with lousy coaches unless the money makes it worth while. So Danny, start opening the check book to your current players or they're going else where. But look at it this way, atleast if champ or lavar go else where in the future or sometime soon. We can then start blaming the talent level we have onboard opposed to other areas, like coaching. But right now! the Talent should not be te real issue.

After watching yesterday’s game, all I can say is that I can’t believe I wasted 3 hours of my life. Extremeskins.com has clearly become a site with the fire Spurrier vs. fire Snyder vs. fire the players. The fact is its everyone, not one group but everyone. I hear people say we are a talented team…..but where. The only 4 players this year that I can clearly say we have talent (or atleast to the point we could build our team around) at is WR Coles, CB Smoot, QB Ramsey and K Hall.

Most other players this year have been victimized on a continuous basis. Everyone wants to point to Bailey and the Lavar’s and say we have talent….but plain and simple, these players aren’t getting it done, atleast not to the degree of their Pro Bowl status. Hell why pay a guy 5-10 mil when you have players around the league accomplishing the same stats while being paid 1-2 mil.

I like many have been disappointed in Spurrier especially yesturday, not because he didn’t run the ball in the 3rd quarter when we were down by 17 and Dallas was sticking 8 men in the box, but the fact that he didn’t make any mid game adjustments to counteract what Dallas was doing on defense. To his credit though, this is not his style of offense. He has a west coast QB running very simple 3 step drop patterns, and clearly the Cowboys saw this, and decided why blitz, lets just sit in our zones, and shut this sh!t down…like they did. That still is know excuse for not make atleast some adjustments during the game.

As far as Snyder, I give him credit for going after people, but I do think free agency and big names may be starting to catch up with him. We were somewhat mislead this offseason by Snyder by believing his RFA and FA acquisitions would somehow counteract a poor defense of line (and feeling that big names, equate to big plays). To his credit, I’m not sure there was a tremendous amount he could have done about the line, but clearly we have fielded one of the porous groups in the entire league. All this adds up to is a disappointing season where there are no winners, just a bunch of losers.

Where does all this lead too…..well, I think the end of the 2004 season will let us know where this team is headed. If Spurrier doesn’t get it done next season, this entire squad needs to be purged…..take the cap hit in one year no matter how much it is, and just start over. A new guy running

How about KGB and Sam Adams for the same money paid to Coles and Morton? I think we both would've been happier.

To be honest, we're not a well rounded team in all areas, especially DL. But to go from a #5 defense to the bottom of the pack in the matter of one season with basically the same players is unreal. True enough, we may be missing the services of Darrly Gardener on the line, but to have a total collaspe and constant discipline issues is attributed to coaching. I watch alot of other football teams play as well as the Redskins. But it seems we can never get the full potential out of marginal players opposed to other teams.

It's just some coaches can bring the best outta the players they have abroad, but not the Redskins coaches. To be honest, the defense has had it share of let downs at the end of games. But I honestly think if the Offense was playing a little better thorugh out the entire season. The defense would have risen to the occasion in many of those games we lost. I see teams like the Indy Colts playing with marginal players on defense and on they're way to the playoffs. But don't get me wrong, the Indy defense is nothing to brag about either. But the offense atleast gives the defense some hope and optimism.

I betcha a number of coaches could work with this defense and have them playing up to par. Coaches like Billick, Belichick, Parchells, Dungy and Andy Reid to name a few. Basically, the players are trying to due to much and they start free-lancing if the confidence in the coaches are shattered or shaky.

Furthermore, if the players don't have any respect for the coaches as far as discipline is concerned. It's like teenagers running over their parents and doing as they please. Knowing no actions are going to be taken. You think Bill Parcells would put up with players free-lancing without benching them or having them tossed off the team? You think Parcells would tolerate Old guys like Bruce Smith constantly questioning his playing time? especially when he's not producing.

You think some players like Jon Jansen would make sarcastic remarks toward the coaching staff if it was Parcells coaching? Not!

It all starts with the coaches and the confidence and respect the players have for those coaches and how those coaches game plan and prepare schemes. It all helps to build character on the team and bring players closer together on the playing field and believing in the system and never giving up.

Few examples: the coaches names I gave above and the teams they coach. Eagles,Colts,Cowboys,Ravens,Bengals. These are all teams that don't have alot of talent but seem to be well coached and players believe in the system. Don't get confused when I say don't have much talent. I'm excluding the Colts Peyton Manning-Edgerrin James and the eagles Donovan Mcnabb. But some of you think Dononvan's over rated anyhow. But these teams are finding ways to win from solid and stern coaching, period. Especailly considering the lack of all around talent they have on the defense of side. Well! maybe the eagles have a quality defense. But Andy can let key players walk and plug in a rookie and get better production than the Redskin do with veterans under poor coaches.

So, again, is it really the talent? or the lack of quality coaches on the team to give these guys something to believe in.

LaVar Arrinton's stats

year tackles solo sacks FF Int

2000 52/45/4/0/0

2001 99/83/.5/0/3

2002 95/73/11/4/0

2003 79/70/5/5/0

Not sure what is the matter with his stats? Forcing 5 fumbles is a pretty damn good feat and he still has two games left!

I agree with the loss of Gardner and Wilkenson it kind of exposed there importance. Not that Wilkenson was worth his money or Gardner what he got in Denver but the fact there gone made us even more weak up front!

The Defensive line has a way of making everyone on the defense either look good or bad depending on how they perform. I hope we can get some guys on the Defensive line that can sure up one glaring area of need in the offseason whether Fa's or Rookies.
