The Internet protocol datacast, IPDC, will bring TV to mobile handsets, and is set to begin in autumn 2004 with 500 initial users in and around the capital, Helsinki. Finland has three terrestrial networks for digital television broadcasting, while a fourth digital broadcast network has been reserved for mobile datacasting. Nokia, the world's biggest cell phone maker, will provide equipment for the mobile telecasts, including terminals that enable the devices to receive the broadcast signal. "This commercial pilot is a world class example of cooperation between telecommunications and media industry to further research the opportunities of broadcast services to mobile phones," said Timo Teimonen, from Nokia Ventures. Finland's biggest mobile service providers, TeliaSonera and Radiolinja, will provide access to the service while programming will come from YLE, the national broadcaster, and leading commercial TV providers, MTV3 and Nelonen. Digita, which provides network services to media customers, will broadcast and operate the pilot IPDC service. *** I wonder what the prevalence rate of blindness will be in 20 years...
