Then file a grievance against the team if you feel that strongly. Or demand a trade. Or do something other than sit at home because technically he's still under contract and legally obliged to play. I honestly think there should be harsher repercussions for a player not playing while under contract. Right now Trent isn't standing up for anything. He hasn't taken a stance. No one knows what his deal is other than a few beat reporters playing broken telephone. This is Trent acting like a child.

Earnest Byner and Gerald Riggs, the key to our 91 running game were acquired via trade.  We got Byner for Mike Oliphant.

The Riggs trade wasn't a win - Redskins traded a 2d, a 1st and a 5th for Riggs (contributed little to the Redskins).  Byner was a win though.

Sure he is under contract but can be cut without pay. Not much of a contract one should feel compelled to honor if he is afraid it may unreasonably jeopardize his health.

I hate that "cut with no pay argument". Dude earned 41 million out of the 68 on the contract without playing a down thanks to the guarantee and signing bonus. He could have essentially gotten hurt on the first play of the first game and he still would have gotten that money. He also could have been terrible and he still gets that money. He's missed basically a season's worth of games (15) due to suspension or injury since the contract came into play and guess what? He still got his salary in full for all 4 of those years. He's MORE than gotten fair compensation for his performance at this point and if money is any part of his gripe then I would have no problems letting him sit and rot away before cutting him. I'd gladly take the L for not getting anything in return if his primary gripe is monetary.

Riggs had 11 TDs in that 91 season and I remember him being crucial in short yard and goal line situations. We got a SB out of it so how you can say it wasn't a win is beyond me.

16 games - 248 total yards and a 3.2 ypc is beyond you?

No, the fact that we won a super bowl and he was a very important piece of that.

He wasn't critical to winning the Superbowl not even close. By 1991 (his third and  last year with the Skins) his role was reduced to being the Redskins short yardage back running behind arguably the best line ever assembled (In that situation and offensive style 11 TDs should be expected of just about any RB).  Are you saying a player limited to short yardage work is worth a 1st, 2d and 5th round pick?

It's a little like Doug Williams and Timmy Smith.

In 1987, they each played in 5 games and 7 games, respectively, in the regular season and didn't do much during the year (and not much, in the seasons thereafter, either). But they both played roles in the Super Bowl win. So, they were worth the acquisitions.

looked it up, we got a fifth with him.  And he was very important in the Super Bowl

He literally led all redskins players in TDs. In case you haven’t been watching the redskins recently but we’ve had an awful difficult time punching it in from close.

Yeah Mike's zone blockers couldn't push for a yard to save the day.  We didn't even try a QB sneak for what seemed like 3 years.  Swapping out Trent may make us more power but we had very much retained Mikes zone guys/plays.  Lauvao finally gone may help push for a yard.

It doesn't help that Gruden shows run and runs into a brick wall. We have some semblance of power with Scherff but it's still tough sledding. I won't hold my breath for Jay to go PAP from heavy jumbo for the rest of his tenure in DC.

Is anyone else tired of the title of this thread being "New Development: ..."?

If there was ever an example of a topic that needed a title of "No Development: ...", this is it. ;)

Seriously, wouldn't it be great if the OP would change the title to include the date if/when there are real developments?

Yes and no, because there was never a threat of him getting cut or traded.

He would have collected bonus money for showing up but didn't, so it comes down to his grievance about his livelihood.  That doesn't appear to be all about the money.  Rather he's pissed off and staging a battle about the Skins Medical staff, not the training staff.  There's a difference. He doesn't even train there unless it's in season.  They told him it's probably a cyst but he should get it checked out.  Twice they said that.  He blew it off because all he heard was it was probably a cyst.  Medical Staff didn't do anything wrong but also should have insisted on a Specialist clearing the issue after it was observed.  Though not legally negligent, it wasn't handled top notch.

I kind of do. Not sure if my "post count" is high enough for anyone to care but when we have been the most injured team in the league for the past 2 or 3 seasons and 2 players are publicly voicing their opinion one of whom is a Pro Bowl left tackle , Maybe we should listen ? I know know, crazy thought.....

You say "2 players are publicly voicing their opinion one of whom is a Pro Bowl left tackle", but for the life of me, I can't figure out who that Pro Bowl left tackle is. I would have guessed Trent Williams, but for him to publicly voice his opinion, he'd have to actually, I dunno, VOICE HIS OPINION.... Which he hasn't. So I dunno who that Pro Bowl tackle is you have in mind.

I mean, I guess you could say he has gotten across that he has "an opinion", but it would be awesome if he'd go beyond hinting "I have an opinion" and tell us what this opinion is about. Is it that the trainers should have kissed his boo-boo? Does he want them to change to the Hello Kitty brand bandaids? Maybe he's been studying fashion and refuses to wear red and white jerseys, and wants to go with maroon and black? There's always the chance that it's gross negligence by the health officials, lying and scheming to keep him on the field while risking a serious health problem. It's hard to say when the one upset person on the team who is involved, looked up to, idolized, and respected wants to pout instead of telling us why he's pouting.

Ding.

The quick math on it is he'd give up roughly 13 mil in game checks for 3 mil raise to be the highest paid LT. And then still face a possible lockout if next year's CBA isn't in place in time. No way he's smoked enough weed for that math to even make sense.

Trent has made a ton of money, is thought to have his "pockets straight", and has garnered praise and fame for being elite at his position.

He's pretty much known nothing but losing with the redskins though and left guard has been a problem for a while, making his job more difficult.

I can't say money isn't the real issue, but he might just be tired of playing for an organization that constantly underperforms and makes the same mistakes. Constantly striving to be the best or actually being the best can really strain a person if the end goal is never achieved.

I suspect the medical thing is more of a minor issue that pushed him over the edge.

Weve seen similar things happen with elite players such as Barry sanders and megatron.

This 100%. I’m sure it’s not a great feeling battling injuries constantly and playing through them only to see 20 other guys around you on the offensive side of the ball be placed on IR giving no chance to actually compete. It’s a culmination of things, theres not a chance based off what we know to date that he has a legitimate medical case against the skins. It seems like a player that’s given it his all and enough is enough. That’s fair, can’t say I really blame him and want to make it very clear that he will always be one of my favorite Redskins if for nothing else than punching Dick Sherman in the face. But still man, you signed the highest paid contract at the time and made 40+ million guaranteed. Lame move.

Yeah it sucks.

Barry sanders signed the highest paying NFL contract only to retire halfway through it (and had to pay an portion back) because his failing franchise helped sap his love for the game.

Same with Calvin Johnson, also paid a portion back in order to retire early.
