How's the Redskins Roster shaping up?

It seems like lack of speed was a big issue in 2018.

I'm looking at Mark Bullock's articles on The Athletic.  He's breaking down some play concepts we like to run.  I see things where a player would be wide open against the coverage, but he can't get down the field fast enough for the QB to make that decision.  Or the QB's quick read of a high/low route combo that puts the LB in a decision problem isn't that effective since the high portion is ran too slow to draw the LB farther away from the low option.  The play turns into a check down elsewhere.

Hopefully a healthy Richardson and rookie Terry McLaurin will help, a lot.  I don't think Quick, Doctson, Harris, etc were getting to their spots fast enough for Alex Smith.  He made a read, saw he'd have to wait for it to develop, so went to the other side of the field or threw the checkdown.  Those guys have average NFL play speed, there were times they'd get bodied early in a route, which slows them by a step.  At that point, it's game over for the route combo.

If Doctson doesn't develop to handle physical coverage better, at some point do we just bench him to see what Sims, McLaurin, etc can do?  Doing that would punt a possible Compensatory pick we'd get in free agency.  If the season's lost, then keep playing Doctson for the comp pick, but maybe if we're still in it...roll with the youth?

3 NFL magazines all have the Redskins finishing last.  Almost every draft geeks have them picking in the top 5 next year.   Now this.  😀   Obviously the national media, draft geeks, power rankers and Vegas don't think much of this roster.  I think they are wrong.  To me its an 8-8 type roster as opposed to a bottom feeder.

I saw him.  He looks noticeably thinner.

I'm guessing he beefed up to take on blocks better, then realized he was getting roasted in coverage.  Biggest issue in the run game wasn't our LB's ability to shed blocks.  But a big issue against the pass was surely LB's out of position or lacking wheels.

if DH starts we might win 4 games. With Case we could win 8 or more. Depends on the defense....I think Case can manage games and in some cases win them as opposed to an inexperienced Haskins.

I don't know how the Skins win 8 games with their OL always hurt.  TW saga aside, the fact is that they have 3 good OL'men and they only play together about 5 game a season.  Skins are a below .500 team and with an often injured OL, no quality backup OT's, the first 5 games of the season will throw them into the tank early.  They'll need to tank and get two OL'men in 2020 for a rebuild.  I'd be happy to see some vet traded to needy teams before the season starts.  Wouldn't mind seeing them off the likes of TW, Reed, Norman to name a few so they can rebuild into contending past 2020.

In my mind, this roster is all about question marks and potential.  The good news is that, in contrast to some past seasons, 1) the potential is not centered around youth and unknowns (rookie late rounders and UDFAs, young guns that haven’t shown anything, as well as uncertain FA fits) and 2) the question marks aren’t mostly based on (aging or journeymen) free agents.  In other words, there is a good deal of young, (at least somewhat proven) talent driving the potential.  Unfortunately, a lot of the question marks are based on health.

My assumption is that we will see some pleasant surprises from various positions, but injuries will ultimately derail the season again.  The good news for me is that the apathy that crept in last year has been mostly overtaken by the intriguing nature of this roster; not because I expect much this season in terms of our record, but because I’m seeing the (personnel) ship moving in the right direction.

The roster looks decent on the defensive side of the ball,  particularly the D line, and I like the secondary.  But where are we going to be at the linebacker position? I soured immediately when Foster went down in a non-contact drill in the OTA's and thought here we go again. It is almost a curse.

The offense is a wild card going into the season.   Again the potential is amazing.  I think we are going to start with Keenum.  The receiver position with Sims, Quinn, Doctson, and McClurin is not bad.  Both Quinn and Sims lost valuable development time last year and Doctson, while I don't dislike him as much as others on the board, has never been used properly in Gruden's offense and probably never will be.   I don't know why he was drafted.  CT if he is not injured is always a lightening rod.  Reed if he is not injured severely hurts defenses, but how many times do we say that every year before he is hurt?  Sprinkle is really decent and I would like to see more of him, which we probably will.  The TE position has talent, no doubt, Davis too, even though he dropped some key passes last year that really surprised me.  McClurin like Sims and Quinn is a wait and see prospect but I love his speed and precision.

I love the potential of Peterson, Guice and switching it up with CT.  It is like a three headed monster that could give defenses fits with just a modicum of decent blocking upfront - AND there we have the biggest question mark of all.  What the hell is the O line going to be composed of?  And where is the depth?  The Trent Williams thing is of course about money but he is also sour about other things with this team - the medical? Probably not.

But, keeping it real just like @skinny21 points out above it is the damn injuries that have killed this team and rendered them ineffective year in and year out.  I mean on paper this team looks so solid.  And may they field the best QB, which I think is going to be Keenum.

that's only one more win than each of the past two years.  Last year we were only a couple plays from 9-7 or at least a chance at it, the same is also true in 2017

@skinsmania123 you know that's been the tag on RF, being injured early and often.  To his credit and demise he's got one speed and it's full blast and ultimately downhill on fire!  Often see him injured from blasting threw a hole going for the kill shot.  Don't get me wrong, that's great to have an assassin on your payroll but the kid needs to be taught how to reel in his hormones and play smarter.  Current injury was OTA's, where he blasted threw a hole and blindly pivot stepped on a teammates ankle.  That's not exactly the negative karma haunt replaying the Skins theme song, rather RF's instinctive Nitro Blast where it's completely unnecessary. Still a total bummer but I don't view it as a defensive scheme killer.  I'm pretty high on SDH and a faster Mason Foster.

There are some rumors that Kenny Still is available for nearly nothing, while he’s not a sexy name, he’s explosive & I think he’d provide Haskins with a but more of what he had at OSU than we have here. I’d be interested, but I haven’t looked at his contract situation.

What are the odds.

I Disagree. Our CBs are above average.

We dont have a jalen ramsey, but Norman is capable of consistent above average play and can be a playmaker at times. Dunbar is a plus 2ND cb. Stroman and moreau are good depth with potential to start.

We also have what looks to be a promising rookie in jimmy Moreland and some depth with time in our defensive scheme. Safety position *should* be improved as well and the defensive line will probably only get better, allowing our secondary more room for error.

The big problem last year for our secondary was losing our safety mid season and the ineptitude of our offense. It was so bad last year and sucked the life out of the team, putting the defense in impossible scenarios. Generally plus defenses still fail in such scenarios.

I predict that if *a big if* we can have a decent offense, our secondary as a whole will be viewed entirely differently and will be seen as a strength.

Disagree all you like but those stats are quite pathetic. Both Norman and Dunbar are giving up over 1 Td per 10 pass attempts.

Those 4 guys alone gave up 3 more TDs than the Redskins QBs passed for the entire season.

Statistics can be finagled to make most opinions. I'm not sure if you forgot but the skins were on their 4th string or so qb last year.

I do agree that the saints/falcons games were pathetic.

Our d very rarely had chances to pin their ears back or have high leverage situations though. That **** matters when viewing the overall production of a unit.

I don't think they're the problem.

We all  know ~80% of the roster.

Big questions. IR Colt?  Retain Doctson?  Depth OL behind the starters and Geron Martin I think we keep Parris and Bergy. I think we keep 3 backs.

Defense I am sticking with Cassanova as a lock.

100% on Cassanova

WR is really the only big question.

Yes crazy to think willing to keep Perine as number 4 back when cant play special teams. That is just waste of a roster spot.  He has looked terrible in 2nd preseason and ok in 3rd.

Our 4th Running back needs to be able play 3rd down and play special teams ideally.
