Overview

Harmon might show up as average in the speed and quickness departments, but he knows how to play and he plays to his strengths. He has issues separating against tight man coverage so he uses his frame, play strength and ball skills to own a bigger piece of a smaller catch space. He has a big-dog swagger.

Some of you are a little enthusiastic, which is good to see.   He's a sixth rounder.   If he's on the roster in two years it's an ok pick.   I think No. 1 material is a bit much :).   But I ain't going to tell you to put down the kool aid.   I hope you're right :).

You should watch his tape instead of being put off by the round he was selected in tbh. Projected 2nd rounder in most places pre-draft. The talent isn't really in question. Teams put off by combine numbers. The tape doesn't lie. He's really good. I like him more than McLaurin tbh.

I've watched his stuff.   I'm not overly concerned with his 40 time but he doesn't appear AT ALL QUICK to me.   A lot like Doctson who's faster in a straight line, but seems to have ZERO quickness.   This guy is a bit bigger and can be a solid player for us.   I just don't know that I've ever seen a No. 1 receiver taken this low.   Can anyone think of a legit No. 1 wideout out of the sixth round other than Antonio Brown, who is elite quick?

Hey, I'm not knocking him.   He's a good player with great production.   Super happy to have him.   I just can't see what I've seen of his skill set being a legit No. 1 receiver in the NFL.   But I hope in three years that's the dumbest thing I've ever said :).

I usually don't get enthusiastic about 6th rounders.  And I am not swearing by Harmon but IMO this dude can play and he's fun to watch.  My favorite 6th rounder maybe of all time as for the Redskins.  Granted its all theory until the bullets start flying.  But I wanted this dude since the 4th round.  So pleasedas heck they got him in the 6th. 

 

Like McLaurin he can block.  But he's a totally different type of receiver.  He's an X.  He has good body control, strong hands.  He's a feisty player both in terms of competing for contested catches and in the open field getting YAC.   Is Harmon a #1 probably not.  But IMO has enough talent to compete with any of the guys we have in house.  And brings an attitude I think that's missing some among our pass catchers.

 

None of these plays below are crazy special.  But in the 4 games I've watched of him, he makes plays like that routinely.  He's not flashy but he gets open.  He was ranked #1 among all eligible receivers in the draft in receiving expected points.

Best comparison is probably Marquis Colston. 6th rounder, actually started as a TE because he was pretty slow but big-bodied, but quickly stuck at WR and developed into a physical, if non-explosive, possession/redzone specialist WR1

Yeah I got torched in the draft thread for bringing up the the fact that that the guy is slow and survived in college on physicality. Good luck with that transitioning to the next level where EVERYONE is physical. I dont hate Harmon. But would have preferred more speed. And speed was available at that pick,.

No torching from me.  The draft is a crap shoot.  There are no rights or wrongs.  And yeah 6th rounders rarely pan out.  So I get the skepticism.  It makes sense.  But to play some devil's advocate:

 

4.6 is OK.  It's not great speed but not horrible.  It's pedestrian.  His 10 was fine and similar to top prospects including Deebo, Harry and others.

 

I spent more time watching receivers in this draft than any other position.  And I am purely of course an amateur so I am not swearing by my opinion.  But if you watch 5 games or so of any player IMO anyone of us can get at least a good vibe of what style of a player they are.    

 

My takes at receiver have been good so far.  They might look bad later. :ols:   My top 2 receivers went 1-2.   Some of my dark horse likes at receiver were Diontae Johnson (who was taken early in the draft by the Steelers who said they had a first round grade on him) and Keesean Johnson who also was taken earlier than some expected.   I've gotten some wrong too.  I liked Doctson.  That one isn't looking hot.  So it is a crap shoot.  

 

I waited until this week to look at Harmon and i almost didn't bother.  His 4.6 40 and reputation of being a physical receiver felt yawn to me.  And then I sat down and watched him with an open mind.  And I was surprisingly more impressed by him than some of the more ballyhooed athletic receivers. 

 

My main beef with receivers who aren't fast is can they separate, can they get open, can they get deep, etc.  And this dude in spite of his 4.6 speed gets open, gets deep and  separates better than a lot of the other more athletic receivers I watched.  In that sense he reminded me of Michael Thomas who actually has similar speed.  

 

I am not saying I am right about him  And I do get the skepticism.  I was skeptical, too.  And you can't swear by any player really -- what's the success rate for the typical 6th rounder like 10%?  So for me its tough not to get jazzed about getting in the 6th a receiver that some including Brugler saw as a 2nd round type prospect. 

 

Brugler who knows miles more about football than me has him ranked the 6th best receiver ahead of even Harry.   Not that it matters what he or anyone else thinks.  But for me, he was an impressive and fun watch.   I touted McLaurin too and i think he will help this team.  But Harmon to me is the more fun watch of the two.   Could he end up a bust?  Sure.  But for me I dig the style he plays -- the feistiness and physicality.  We don't have a dude like that IMO within our receiving corp right now so for me it will be fun to see him compete for a job.
