In today's Divisional Debacle, the Defense under Greg Manusky in the first half, gave up 207 yards of offense (105 rushing/102 passing) and two touchdowns.  That said, they did manage a single INT on which the Offense actually managed to score a touchdown off of. They allowed 12 of 16 passes to be completed .

In the second half it was 107 yards given up (58 rushing//49 passing) a field goal and a touchdown. They traded their first half pick for a second half sack. However, Dallas completed all five of their pass attempts.

Don't read that thinking "Well it seems like they tightened up some in the 2nd half."  They didn't. They simply had about half the plays in the second half. 30 plays in the First and 18 in the Second.

So far in two Divisional matchups, the Defense has faltered in the Second half. They start out like a house of fire for the first few drives until their opponents gradually make adjustments. This Defensive coaching staff fails make any adjustments, whether in game or at the very least at Halftime. They've given up over 30 points per game for a total of 63 points given up in two games. While the Bears are up next, the Pats await and they've put up over 70 points in two games. Yeah. Ok. They did shut out the Dolphins today which is looking like the NFL version of ... ahem... shooting fish in a barrel.

The frustrating thing is Manusky is the DC that the Front Office actively looked to replace during the off season without firing him. When you know they're looking to replace you, most people would make a concentrated effort to show an improvement. Yet Manusky's Defense still keeps acting like it's starring in Groundhog Day.

In his post game presser, when asked directly about if any coaching changes would be made, Gruden said "No, I think after two games – you’re talking about playing two very good offensive football teams and two of the best offensive lines in pro football we just played back-to-back. That’s no excuse whatsoever, but I don’t think we need to hit the panic button yet. We just have to continue to focus on what we can do better to win. Get Jonathan [Allen] in here, get a couple of our corners back in here and let’s go back and strap it up against Chicago [Bears] next week and see what happens.”

Here's another frustrating thing. The defensive communication was an issue last season as well. Wasn't this supposed to have been worked on during OTA's and Training Camp? It's understandable that the rookies would still be on a learning curve, but NFL vets like Collins and DRC you'd think they would have down by the start of the season.

Gruden said they're a very talented group on Defense but that they weren't reaching them. When questioned as to why the coaching staff that has been in place for several years, wasn't reaching them, he defended the comment as them being a young defense. “We have some moving parts now. Landon Collins is a veteran guy but this is his first year, [Montez] Sweat’s in his first year, [Cole] Holcomb, it’s his first year, [Jon] Bostic is in his first year. We’re playing Dominique [Rodgers-Cromartie] at corner and this is Jimmy Moreland’s first year, so it’s not like we are the most experienced group. We feel like were very talented, but we`re still fighting through somethings. There are a lot of things to look forward to, without a doubt, but we do have to play better and strap it up and get back to work."

Williams got more money from the Jets and used the Skins.   Joe Woods is a name to keep an eye on.  Been saying this for a couple days now.  He's from the TB good ole boy network Allen/Gruden days.

I’ve been reading this the last few days and I’m surprised some got their hopes up. Honestly need new blood and a disaster of a season. Also Gregg Williams lied about the bounty gate and wanted players with concussions targeted. That’s a low life thing to do. Jay also is too much of a spineless jelly fish to want that type of character in the room.

So to sum it up for anyone who has been out the last couple days.

1) GW's negotiations with Jets hit a "snag".

2) GW has a quick cup of coffee with Dan and Bruce.

3)  BOOM. Jet's remove the snag in negotiations.

And still no strength & conditioning staff changes. What the **** does the FO even DO?? And no offensive coordinator changes even though Gruden is a failure. They don’t want to get better. It’s clear to me.

Yeah I thought multiple reasons would play into this -- but my thought was the kicker likely would be Dan wouldn't outbid the Jets coupled with Dan-Bruce saddling Gregg with the in house staff versus letting him build his own.

I hope Dan gets a clue that no good or decent coaches will put up with his BS. He is so ostracized now it is embarrassing. I can't imagine someone with his "ego" accepting he is a laughing stock and poster boy for "Stupid"

Nobody from the Jets or the Williams camp denied that the Redskins were interested or the deal was complete.

In the end, it's entirely possible Williams or his representatives leveraged the Redskins interest into greater compensation or operational control from New York. That's the way business gets done.

Now, it looks more and more like the Redskins will keep Greg Manusky on as defensive coordinator despite meeting with Bowles and Wilks and trying to meet with Williams. Awkward.

No way to know for sure.  But this roller coaster for defensive staff over recent years seem to start with Haz where some who cover the team suggested the Dan-Bruce preferred to keep him and staff when Shanny was fired and Jay arrived in order in part to save some dough.

Like I said last night when I posted the old WP story about ironically the Gibbs-Gregg era where they had a high end expensive staff and operated to keep that going.

Looks like he's done a 180 and now has become a cheap about staff.    I recall Laconfora saying when the Redskins were putting out feelers for personnel guys when Scot was fired that the Redskins have the reputation of being cheap and the best guys can get paid much better elsewhere without the dysfunction and thus didn't want to come here.

One of the cool bonuses of the Bruce era 😀 is the dysfunction is as loud and proud as it was during the Vinny era but to add to that they don't pay as well as many other teams do to attract people to Redskins Park.     So its dealing with dysfunction on a discount.

Maybe Dan departed from that here but until I hear otherwise I'd bet that Dan wasn't willing to outbid the Jets, if anything he was paying less and to boot the Jets likely gave him more freedom to pick his staff.  I recall Gregg when he was here made a big deal about his staff and how essential it is to have top assistants.

Yay, mismanagement and front office incompetence prevents us from upgrading our staff, yet again!

Calling this slag team a dumpster fire is an insult to dumpster fires.

The thing is that other than his personality, we don't know that Williams would be that much of an improvement over Manusky. Its still like reordering chairs on the Titanic. Manusky has a good resume and if you look at this year, I'm sure that if he was released from his contract he'd get offers. Probably the same with Gray. That's probably why the Skins are doing things as they are. Its not like we have a complete dud as a coach. The question is can we do better.

I was ok with the hire of Manusky but I wouldn't say his resume is "good" at least no statistically speaking.  In 11 years he never had a top 10 defense (zero) in yards and just twice in points.  More than half of those years the defenses were top 20 or worse.   I think his reputation is average.

When you hear people talk about the better defensive coordinators in the league, Manusky is never in that conversation from what I recall.  Having said that I don't hate Manusky being here.  I like Gregg but don't see him as some sort of magician fix all either.

To me the operative point is can they attract top names to Redskins Park.  The answer seems to be no.  Now I do think old school Dan can attract the big names by offering big money but if they are going to be cheap about it -- the days of big names considering coming here I think might be dead and gone until Bruce at least leaves.
