StillUnknown
going to roll into 2019 hoping that Martinez figures out how to manage a bullpen and stick up for his players Edited January 1, 2019 by StillUnknown
Dan T.
Headed to West Palm in early March for a springtime look at this team. Always a great trip to get away from the dregs of winter and bask in the warm glow of a new season. Right now there's a weird mixture of optimism and trepidation with all the offseason changes.
@DCGoldPants
Looking forward to spring training big time. Hope they work Zimm like a dog all camp. Everybody works.
Warhead36
The Caps broke through in 2018. Its time for the Nats to do the same. Even without Harper we have the horses to win. Its gonna come down to the Manager and some luck. 2

He seems genuinely humble. Maybe that's just me. 3 hours ago, Dan T. said: Headed to West Palm in early March for a springtime look at this team. A fun memory was during their last spring in Vierra was watching the pitchers doing a hitting drill on a practice field. They split into two teams and turned it into a competition. Max was one captain, and Gio was the other captain. We're right up against the fence so we could hear the chatter. There were no fielders, so they had to judge whether a hit ball was a base hit or not, which led to some spirited debates. We could hear Max speaking Spanish to cheer on his Hispanic guys. Gio was really animated any time his guys got a hit, whooping and strutting with arms raised over his head. He was clearly a really likeable guy, among fans AND teammates. Quick story about Gio. This was year one in West Palm. We're roaming around the practice fields, and Gio's on one of the fields with a dozen or more teenagers milling around him, all with light blue T-shirts on. Turns out they were the Hialeah High School baseball team, where Gio went to school. He hosted the team's annual visit to spring training, giving them an insider's tour and introducing them to teammates. He's also given a bunch of money to the school to upgrade their training facilities. https://www.mlb.com/nationals/news/nationals-gio-gonzalez-transforms-hialeah/c-269291030

StillUnknown
http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/25653903/why-baseball-world-waiting-manny-bryce Quote Harper has met multiple times with representatives of the Washington Nationals, according to a club source, and the possibility of a return to the place he spent the first seven years of his career persists, despite Nationals owner Mark Lerner's insistence that Washington would not stretch beyond the $300 million offer Harper rejected near season's end. The Phillies and White Sox are the other two teams known to be willing to guarantee Harper the decade-plus-long deal he and Machado, each 26 years old, are seeking. Harper's willingness to wait for a contract he deems suitable is real, according to a source who said he could see Harper's free agency stretching into February

He's the anti-Bruce Allen. He gets it. He knows how to get things done, and he knows how to work with the ownership group.
Warhead36
As I said before, the longer he goes without a deal, the more likely it is he returns to DC.

Riggo#44
From MLBTR: Quote Bryce Harper and agent Scott Boras had a five-hour meeting with Nationals owner Ted Lerner on December 22, Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports. Sources from within the team declined to confirm that such a meeting took place, which Janes describes as “a departure from their relative openness about their status with Harper this winter.” One possibility is that Lerner held the meeting without informing anyone else in the organization, which Janes notes “has happened before,” though it could be that the front office is keeping quiet on details either as a gamesmanship tactic (to drive up Harper’s price for other teams), or because an ardent pursuit of the free agent outfielder is underway. This is the latest twist in the perhaps-ongoing courtship between Harper and the Nats, as ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan reported earlier today that Harper had had “multiple” meetings with team representatives. Boras and Lerner have a longstanding professional relationship that has resulted in several high-profile Boras Corporation clients (i.e. Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer) sign extensions or free agent deals with Washington. Boras has also often bypassed general managers to negotiate directly with ownership in some particularly major contracts, and he has signaled this intent in regards to Harper’s market this offseason. @DCGoldPants
I could see a situation where Harper comes to the Nats and asked for a 3-5 year deal with a few off ramps that he could use to be a FA again after 3 years.

@DCGoldPants
Quote Washington Nationals - Top 5 ?s for 2019: What do Nationals have in Patrick Corbin? Coming off a 2018 campaign in Arizona which saw him post career bests in ERA (3.15), FIP (2.47), strikeouts (246), starts (33), WHIP (1.05), hits allowed per nine innings (7.29), home runs allowed per nine innings (0.68), strikeouts per nine innings (11.07), and strikeout-to-BB ratio (5.13), Patrick Corbin, 29, signed a 6-year/$140M deal in D.C., joining the Washington Nationals’ rotation alongside right-handers Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg. “Pitching is king to win major league baseball games,” Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo declared in the press conference introducing the southpaw to the nation’s capital, “and we couldn’t be happier to have landed one of the premier left-handed pitchers in all of baseball in Patrick Corbin.” Visit the good folks at Federal Baseball to read more. - https://www.federalbaseball.com/2019/1/3/18165770/washington-nationals-top-5-2019-what-do-nationals-have-in-patrick-corbin

Spaceman Spiff
I'm hoping you guy re-sign Harper. I think there's a good chance that you do. Boras meeting directly with Lerner for 5 hours is a good sign. Would like to see Harper become a DC sports hero in the way that Ovie did this year.
@DCGoldPants
We'll see. Sounds like a push from Boras to any other bidders that they need to go higher.
