The Washington Nationals Thread: The Future is Near!

The next CBA negotiation is going to be ugly. Games will be cancelled. I have a feeling the DH will come to the NL. Manfred will enforce pointless pace of play rules, that no one will understand how to enforce, a la Goodell. Replay and Umpshows will continue to damage the game.

This is baseball's fault.  This will happen more and more.  Arbitration forces athletes to only try for 1 contract.  The great thing about football, you can technically get 2 big deals in your career.  Baseball you can really test the market only once.

I mean a guy like Harper doesn't have to go for a 10 year type deal. Go for a 4-5 year deal and hit FA again when you're 30.

That’s what player opt outs are for. ;)

To be totally honest though, when you look at baseball contracts vs football, hockey, etc, MLB players have had it made for some time. I’m not surprised the pendulum seems to have swung in the opposite direction.

In terms of solutions to “make baseball better,” imo you need a hard salary cap, more revenue sharing, and a salary floor. The net result will probably be a MUCH more competitive situation, and the net result for players will likely be shorter and less lucrative contracts (big market teams will no longer be able to take big risks on contracts and then simply eat the costs if they don’t work out).

Unfortunate situation for players but I think it’s needed to make the sport better. These bloated $200+ million contracts for 30+ years olds are albatrosses for clubs and you’ve seen how even the “soft cap” of luxury tax has corrected teams behavior the past few seasons.

An expansion team could sign a chunk of the top FAs still available and look decent on paper. Crazy offseason.

I agree that Harper/Manny should be looking for 3-5 year deals right now with an off-ramp in there. Get a decent payday now and a chance to dip again whenever the next labor agreement is settled.

What is the best app or service to use if I just want to watch Nats games?

I have DirecTV now, which is a streaming service, but MASN is not an option for them.

MLBTV (plus a VPN service if you are in-market)  is basically the extent of your cord cutting options.

Yeah, I'm local - I saw they blackout local games so that'll be tricky.

I heard that you can get MASN on a digital antenna.  Have you tried that?

Nope but I have DTV, I just know I've ruled out dropping it in the past because of how difficult it would be to get all of my sports (particularly the Nats).

I have unlocked all of them but the Nats, myself (DirecTV Now is awesome for Skins, Caps, Wiz, and EPL).  I missed just about the whole of last season and I'm trying to remedy that.  It doesn't look promising.

I mean you can if you’re willing to use a slightly “against the Ts and Cs” workaround. https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/mlb-tv-blackout-workaround-vpn/

Hulu Live. $44.99 a month. It has NBC Sports Washington, all local pro teams with no blackouts. It says it suppossed to cover all Nats games but I won't know until the season starts.

So two of the rule changes being discussed are 3 hitter minimum for pitcher (except for injury and end inning situation) and universal DH.  If they were to be implemented, wouldn't this raise the value of Harper for an NL team?

HIs career split difference for RHP v LHP is pretty significant (especially the power numbers)

Wow.  Let me know if that works out and I'll switch.  I'm month to month with DTVNow and it's more expensive than that.  I appreciate it.

I would welcome that. He was steady and largely unflappable last year.  It looks like he's never done much long relief.  I wonder if that's in his future.

Ideally it should be. Essentially, he's a 5 inning pitcher
