TK
http://redskins.com/story.asp?ContentID=12389 Smoot Wins 'Ed Block Courage Award' 12/11/2003 By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com Third-year cornerback Fred Smoot has been named by the Redskins as the winner of the "Ed Block Courage Award." All 32 NFL teams select their organization’s winner for the annual award, named for the former Baltimore athletic trainer to honor NFL players who have been able to bounce back from injury and make contributions to the team. All 32 winners of the "Ed Block Courage Award" will be honored at a dinner in the Baltimore area in the offseason. This season, Smoot has battled through two serious injuries, missed only one game and still performed at a high level. Prior to the Week 4 game against New England, Smoot suffered a concussion after he collided with safety Matt Bowen during a play in practice. He was able to play in the Patriots game and recorded five tackles. Two weeks later, Smoot suffered a bruised sternum while tackling Tampa Bay wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. He sat out the following game at Buffalo, rested up during the team’s bye week and was back on the field for the Week 9 game at Dallas. It was obvious, as he walked gingerly around Redskin Park in the week leading up to the Cowboys game, he was in discomfort. The chest injury forced him to take shorter breaths and made breathing difficult in general, especially while covering wide receivers. “You just zone out the pain,” he said later. “You’ve got to keep on going and don’t worry about the pain. There’s something about football, with your adrenaline rushing, you don’t really feel the serious pain until the day after a game anyway.” Smoot recorded six tackles in the Dallas game. For the season, Smoot has recorded 47 tackles (38 solo), three interceptions and eight passes defensed.
Canadian Hog
Congrats Freddie, on a job well done ! Although, I do believe that they might wanna consider developing a Patrick Ramsey Courage Award at some point as well.
redblazer00
Smoot is the man and I wish some of the guys on the Dline had heart like him! Wouldn't mind our running back by committee having a little heart like that to? The RB crew seems like a bunch of girls always having issues with injuries. Don't mean to say girls kinda puts them down since I think they would even have more heart then our bunch of Backs.
Dan T.
Playing through his injury, Smoot showed this year he's much, much, more than just a talker. For a CB to be such a warrior is a special thing. Kudos to him. I actually love listening to him talk. I can only understand a small fraction of what he's saying, but it cracks me up just listening to him. His good nature is infectious, and I can imagine he's a good locker room guy.
