Theisman Comments on Cowpies

The Dallas Cowboys are a contradiction. At receiver, they have Raghib Ismail and Joey Galloway, for whom they gave up two No. 1 picks, yet they are starting a rookie quarterback, Quincy Carter, who probably wouldn't have started at Georgia. If the Cowboys think they can run the option in the NFL, they had better have a dozen more quarterbacks. It may take Emmitt Smith now four years to break Walter Payton's career rushing record.

I totally agree bulldog. I take our offense over the Giants offense every day of the week, and twice on Sunday (when it counts biggrin.gif ).

You notice the other thing about the Redskins write-up? He praises Darrell in a very back handed, self promoting way.

(and I paraphrase)

When he joined the team I was the MVP of the league, and though he didn't understand the position well, his natural talent allowed me to showcase my skills even more in practice.

Would you expect any differently from Thiesmann? (pronounced theeseman)

Theismann was a guy that was hard to like. Even in the best of times. He is best described as a ruthless self-promoter.

He had the luxury of working in a system with a great line, a HOF running back and a future HOF wide receiver.

Yes, he made it all go, but the situation was definitely one where other quarterbacks could have been very successful as well.

You go back and look at his passing statistics from the two Super Bowl games, the win and the loss, and you can see that Joe did not come with his best stuff on either of those days.

The Redskins won on the ground game in those early years.

It wasn't until Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders showed up from the USFL that the Redskins passing attack was taken to a new level in 1986 with Jay Schroeder's 4,000 yard season.

Sorry, but I'm a little behind on this one and I never pass up the chance of hearing someone beat down the cowgirls. Was the first post a quote of "Theeseman" or was it Reagan's comments on what "Little Joe" said. If so, does anyone have a link to post or was it a TV interview ?

Many thanks.

I think everybody realized that once he changed his name to rhyme with Heisman.

I was never a big Theismann fan myself, though I do appreciate his play in the early-mid 80's. I also thought it pretty cool that he was willing to run back kicks just to get on the damn field when Kilmer and Sonny had him frozen out at QB. Guts. I think he does a pretty good job with ESPN. Sometimes he still talks a bit too much, but I usually agree with what he's saying. He's found his niche after football ... good for him.

I played a round of golf with Joe in a charity tournament

about 10 years ago. He was a hell of a lot of fun - it was cold and raining and Joe just was having a great time. He never shuts up, so I could see how he could get on his teammates nerves. However, he was really nice to me and my fellow hackers - he could have spent the day ****ing about how bad the weather was. He's a decent golfer too.

It this makes any sense, he's a better commentator than an analyst. And he's a horrible football writer for some reason. I think he does better when he has less time to think, because he has a tendency to over analyze things.

What I would have given to have ole' #9 back there with Riggo' and company in San Diego, January 1983! biggrin.gif

I never knew I would dislike him, until he commented so hard on the team that made him what he is in football, just to show he could be nuetral. Funny when you ask Simms, Griese, Aikman,Swann, etc. who they like, they stick with the home team, and make no bones about it. When they give an assessment, it is "even" handed.

Hopefully someone will come along and take the mike from him, Hmm, it would only be fitting to have Mark Mosely do it

Joey T was the hardest Redskin to have to stick up for until Deon disgraced the Burgandy and Gold by putting the uniform on. Going to school at Frostburg meant dealing with Steelers fans and they soon learned that the way to shut us up was to mention Theisman. We would always try and steer the conversation back to Riggins or Monk, but once they started hammerin us about Joe, we would just wander back to the keg and try to pick up chicks.

Let's put it this way.......when LT latered Joey T's leg and Schroeder came in and won, the next day we drove from the 'Burg to points east looking for the 1st 7-11 selling a Washington Post. We finally found one in Hagerstown. The headlines screamed "Theisman Out, Skins Win" in, like, the 2nd coming of Jesus type of font. We bought 10 copies and my bro and I each had a copy framed. Mine is still in my parent's attic waiting for me when I get the fat crib with the sports bar/Redskin's shrine in the basement.

Having said all that, I will say that the Theisman of today is nowhere near the person that guided us to 2 Super Bowls. I saw a show where he actually admitted to being such a jerk and has changed. He said that he finally caught a clue after LT did the deal on his leg. From what I've seen, I believe it. I think he is a pretty good commentator and is even better now he's working with McGuire.

I read that article about how he was the reiging MVP and Darrel shows up. I don't think Joe was still trying to be arrogant. I just think he didn't write what he was trying to say very well.

Indy - I prefer commentators to at least have SOME degree of neutrality. I don't mind knowing they are pulling for one team or the other, but I don't want them putting a spin on everything in their team's favor (or against the opposition) during a game.

Theismann can knock the Skins as long as he tells the truth when he does so. You mentioned "Ole #9" ... he does it all the time, so why not Joey T? (I know why, Joey just gets on our nerves but we all LOOOOVE Sonny smile.gif )

Fish - Good story.
