Best Last Day of Work???

Today was last day at second longest job I've ever worked for.  Gave it everything I had to help as much as I could and enjoyed doing it, but it was time to go.  My original request was for it not to be announced until my last day; I didn't want people to think I was checking out or panic because they knew my department was already understaffed and everyone hated my counter-part.  I just wanted to keep helping without a whole lot of attention thrown my way, but they had to announce the job was open and managers were asking why.

Anyway, I've never felt so appreciated as I did today.  There were customers that were sad I was leaving, one even offered me contract work on the side, but I turned it down because I knew it was out of frustration with the remaining staff (couldn't tell them homeboy was possibly in for rude awakening when more people brought on, but I already knew).  Pretty much every employee in the company came to my desk to wish me good luck and that they were happy for me, many of them trying not to comment on their concern which I had as well.

So I thought everything was cool, but they weren't done.

  • They threw a surprise potluck for me out of nowhere,
  • I got a card signed by everyone in the company,
  • a picture to hang up,
  • a pen made from scratch by the former CTO in Redskins colors (wore my Sean Taylor today, btw),
  • and $220 in cash pooled by those who worked in the office.

It's not like when I left my last job where on last day my manager and some co-workers got me so drunk they helped me to my couch and I walked several miles in the AM to go get my car.  I remember hitting a strip club in between with them, but this... this was different.

My last job knew they were going to have a hard time replacing me (latter admitted that they gave up and one of the owners just started doing my job himself), but wanted me to leave anyway.  This one they all expected me to give up, throw in the towel years ago, the red tape, the BS, the nepotism, but I didn't.  One of the first ones in, usually the last one out everyday, even after I put in my notice.  This one, people were basically telling me that out of serious concern for the effect on the company and their own jobs they didn't want me to go, but was happy I was able to get out into a better situation.  They were tired of telling me I work too hard and to go home, they did what they could to show how much they appreciated that, they knew I was non-exempt and deserved more if I was going to work like that.

I'll tell anyone that character is what you're doing while no one is looking, and if you stick with it, people will eventually notice.  And I expect better stories then mine (this is pretty tame, leaving last job was ratchet but prototypically for this type of thread)...I gave three weeks notice, but I'm sure some of you gave less then that in your own special way : )

My last day of work at my last job saw me being escorted out by security.  Pretty close second, no?

Ohz Noz, were they spooked of you?

This job stopped somebody while they coming in to work at 8am with a severance package, did same thing to somebody over the phone.  32 years with company combined by those two, reallocating payroll resources.  That's you feel you are sometimes, I was very much a bang for your buck employee, once I realized after Linux+ it was going to stay that way, I was done.

I deleted my domain profile off my work desktop with their permission, I hated that my co-workers didn't get they choice, one of them had they resume on their computer.

Where is that dying at your desk thread?

I'm going to be self-employed, not everyone can be self-employed both statistically and literally.  You can't make companies pay their CEOs less, I really don't want us to try to do that.  Forcing higher wages maybe allow for those resources to naturally flow in that direction, the ratio is ridiculous, and we're talking about people not being able to retire at the same time.

They didn't call me 'Danger' for nothing!

I wish there was a severance involved.

Did you ever go look into that Satanist thing after we had that convo about it?  Anything to report?

Laid off, huh?  I've done unemployment, saved first apartment by picking up part-time hours at old part-time job.  I'm glad we have that, did you at least get that?  I didn't pass my 90 day review, I was a research & development technician with an associates degree.  Everything on my desk I didn't walk in with that day I didn't see again.

I quit one job in my life, it was my first restaurant job for evenings, was doing gas station in the morning.  I was going to train as a waiter, but they had me taking people to tables instead of asking them what they want until a set date.  They also discovered I was best buser in there, but I got sick the day before waiter training and called out, heat rash on my legs.  When I come back, I have to wait for waiter training again, they won't give me the buser's job or wages (I'm getting below minimum wage right here), and the waitresses weren't tipping me (I later learned that entire restaurant should get burned down for that).

Ya'll know minimum wage is below the poverty line for a single adult, right?  World's largest economy can do better, we all know that.

I'm still intrigued by the philosophy, but alas, I have not taken any steps to become one.

I wasn't eligible for unemployment during the first month, but then eligible afterwards.  Monthly unemployment benefits were about double my monthly rent, so I wasn't really hurting for money.

It's kinda sad how I got paid more to sit on my ass and not work than some people get paid to try to make a living.

It's always good to feel appreciated.  You work hard and in a professional and courteous manner and your managers will notice.  If they do not, it's best to move on.  If they do, it will help you in the long run.  I had a good, but typically last day many years ago.  The usual, dinner, cards from my direct team and my department, gift cards of sorts, I think a pen too though now I cannot recall where it may be and I want to find it.

The most moving for me though was during college when I spent two summers interning with the county summer daycare program (SACC for us Fairfax County people).  Groups of children all made cards for me of their own.  That alone made me feel like I made a difference and I was truly sad to leave.  I had planned to come back the following summer and told them so; I didn't as I wanted to pursue a job in a more professional field.  Felt bad about that.

You ever seen "Up in the Air" with George Clooney?

Spoiler

His job was to be sent different places to lay people off in person.  The premise was someone young and new to the company wanted to save money by doing it via something like skype.  So he took her on some trips to see what that's like, eventually ask her to fire someone and keep situation from getting out of control.

Spoiler

They eventually got to an office where close to 70% of their staff was already gone, the office was easily half empty.  One of the people the young lady fired committed suicide, so she quit.

My very last day was March 31, 2016, when I had to go into the office the day they uoloaded the proposal to ensure it was indeed uploaded correctly. I was in the Fairfax office, Contracts was in Philly. I got to bill two hours but not for the one hour commute.

This was the Biz Dev VP who was a screamer, at everyone on any proposal. As the proposal manager, I had to maintain a calm, cool, and collected demeanor, something I was known for.

On June 8, 2016 I had a mild stroke and was hospitalized for 6 days while they tried to find out why. I know why, because Mr. Screamer. My doctors said that I can't manage proposals again, too stressful.

I filed for early Social Security in September when I turned 65, and after my brother died of a massive heart attack in August. It was a ****ty summer.

At least I don't have to work for screamers ever again.

A guy I worked with dropped an email to the company board and officers and basically told them they were ruining the company. It was well worded, respectful, but also brutally honest. I loved it. It dealt with staff cutting, outsourcing to India, refusal to invest in architecture (he compared our network gear to being old when iPhone 4 was cutting edge), and lack of advancement for management outside the USA. Of course the messaging guys made sure a bunch of us saw it.

15 years old. Just started working at Baskin Robbins maybe 2 weeks ago. Manager wanted to go to some party out of state, so he left me and another guy who was still in training to work alone on a hot summer Sunday.

We had lines forming out the door, we were working as hard as we could but the quality was going to crap real quick. parents were getting pissed.

I started giving away orders for free, I couldnt charge people for the slop they were getting. Some people would insist on leaving some money.

We eventually closed the doors. Some friends came over and we went nuts. Making all types of crazy stuff. We made a mess. Made it a point that no one stole anything though.

No one will ever top Steven Slater. http://www.cnn.com/2010/TRAVEL/08/09/new.york.escape.chute.opened/index.html

Slater picked up the intercom and used expletives directed at the passengers, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. It is not clear exactly what was said on the intercom. The source said that when the plane at stopped at the gate, Slater then grabbed some beer from the beverage cart before deploying the emergency slide and using it to leave the plane.

I worked in a factory for 14 years and although it Supported my family it was a miserable existence.

I finally decided to leave and the job I have now pays twice as much and is 100 times more rewarding and allows me the freedom to travel and meet new people and work in new places all the time.

I love my job now as opposed to how the old one was literally slowly killing me.

The irony is that my last day at my old job was July fourth 2011 and although I didn't think much of it  then I look at independence day in a whole new light now.

Last day in the US Air Force.  Office took a half day and my commander bought out the bar on base.  Had a few beers, handshakes and hugs.  Commander presented me with an achievement coin and a few guys I was deployed with came up from Warner-Robbins.  Then an After party with just my closest coworkers at another bar for laughs and well wishes.  Then the after after party with my inner-circle crew back at the house, which is when I blacked out.   Apparently we went to a strip club where I kept burying my face in stripper ass and almost got kicked out.  I don't remember doing all that, but it sounds like me so I believe it.

Woke up the next morning at home on the living room floor.  :headbang:
