Orpik and Grubby traded to Colorado for 47th overall pick.

If thats true that totally sucks. Where did you get that?

EDIT: I just checked Caps Twitter, its true. TERRIBLE value for Grubbauer. Hockey experts were predicting we could have got one the Islanders two first round picks.

That's a GREAT trade...Grubauer alone is worth a 1st...but getting a 2nd AND dumping Orpik's contract is a fantastic move by GMBM.

Not sure what Carlson's asking price will be, but this frees up some $$

FANTASTIC trade. Clears up $5.5M in cap space, in addition to the cap going up $4.5M. Got a 2nd round pick and dumped salary.

Anyone saying Grubi is worth a 1st hasn’t been paying attention to the tender market. Best case was getting a pair of 2nds. Getting a 2nd this year AND dumping $5.5M in salary and a 38 year old defenseman!!!!!!

Those experts don't work for either the Caps or the Islanders.  What they think he's worth and what the Caps could actually get are not necessarily the same thing.  Besides, now that Trotz works for the Islanders and knows Grubby, maybe he doesn't think he's worth that much.

Goaltenders never get good trade value back whether it's Scott Darling or Cam Talbot etc. etc.

More importantly, we just got a boatload of cap room to keep more players including Carlson.

Varlamov got us pretty good value (that we squandered :( )

It’s a solid trade given what they deem they need to do but this is another salary dump which is costing the Caps better assets.

We saw it last year with MoJo and now with Orpik this year.

Being able to re-sign players from a title roster is a bigger asset than a potential prospect. Plus unlike last year we have picks in the first three rounds of this draft. We're in good shape.

I'm not sure it was one or the other since there was the buy out option. Plus, if the Caps could have gotten the number 12 pick in the draft (just speculating on the Islanders trading for him), that is a great asset.

Zero point zero percent chance the Islanders were giving up #12.
