Miami Herald: I’m done trying to understand Trump supporters. Why don’t they try to understand me?

Recommended Posts

The 74 million people who voted for trump are not all stupid and/or evil racists

I know that it is not very much in the style of the dailyKos to make all that much of an attempt to understand, let alone reach out to, the other side (consisting primarily of republicans). The approach around here is more to attack and then try to isolate. If the enemy will not or cannot be persuaded, they must simply be stripped of power. Their complete defeat is the only option.

And that's not always a terrible strategy when going into an election. However, that mindset can indeed warp our understanding of election results.

I'm not going to link to anyone at dailyKos or elsewhere because I'm trying to avoid calling people out by name. But I think it will be clear to anyone who reads this post that there's a strong trend, at Dkos and in other liberal circles, to look on in shock and bewilderment at the fact that 74 million people voted for trump in the November election.

But: what if our shock is due to the fact that we're in our own version of a bubble, and that we simply have not sought out a sufficient number of alternate explanations for the phenomenon of the trump voter?

On these very pages, and in numerous other liberal/lefty blogs, I have often seen right wing columnists and news outlets rightly mocked for their seemingly paranoid assertions that the Libs are socialists who are going to turn us into Venezuela (or something like that).

And yet: what if we're doing something similar to a large number of trump voters? The term "racist," in current usage, connotes the worst kind of evil. So, are we really saying anything about the country, or are we actually revealing something about our own myopia, when we blithely write off an approximate one quarter of America as irredeemably evil? Are we observing, or are we projecting?

I would humbly assert that whenever we find ourselves making generalizations about tens of millions of people, it's time to reflect on the wisdom of our own approach.

Because I have seen it repeated by some of the most prominent bloggers on this website that 70-something million trump voters took a look at the last four years of incompetence, mayhem, malevolence, cruelty, death (300,000 and counting due to Covid), destruction, family separations, and blatantly obvious corruption and decided that that's what they want MORE of!

But this is not just a mischaracterization of trump voters, it's a mischaracterization that accomplishes little other than to make us look bad for having voiced it.

And I would reply that, in my opinion, it seems obvious that quite a lot of trump voters looked at trump and saw little if any of those horrible qualities. Quite a lot of them get their "news" (or propaganda) from entirely different sources than us. Many if not most of them have spent the last four years in a different universe in which trump was an American hero out there restoring the standing of our country as he stood up for America.

Awww, was someone bein mean to trumpies again?

**** them

And I repeat, **** them

I am sick to death of all the "oh we need to understand" and "try to see their point of view" horse**** spewed on this subject.

They're rabid as Cujo or Ole Yeller, don't mean a damn what they were before, they're rabid and snapping at our ankles trying to infect the rest of us.

I used up all my understanding in '16, giving them benefit of the doubt that they got sold a bill of goods. That don't apply this time, they knew it and turned out even harder for four more years of kids in cages and street beatings and environmental atrocities and minority abuse.

There are plenty of reasons people vote for Trump that go beyond deep racism. There's ignorance, stupidity, avarice, petulance, spite...the list goes on. Take your pick.

I actually wholeheartedly support trying to listen, communicate, and change minds. It does happen sometimes. But let's not pretend like there are actual good faith reasons for supporting Trump if you have actually been paying attention.

And therein lies the problem.  Trump supporters are ignorant (some of them willfully so).  They don't pay attention to what's really going on.  They are devoid of critical thinking skills, and they are incapable of rational thought.  They are easily manipulated and readily influenced by Trump and right wing "news" outlets, or just by random bull**** spewed on social media.

The whole beatdown was glorious.  I knew a guy that did it once and got curb-stomped for it.  The last time I saw him, he was wearing a full-face hockey mask.  He deserved it too.  Stupid people.

Once, long time ago, me and my homies were in a bar we frequented so much that we knew all the security and all the bartenders....when one of the security guards got drunk and decided “n’s” weren’t allowed to use the bathroom. Found this out because one of my closest friends, who we call “little” cause....he’s little went to the bathroom and came back wayyyy too fast as looked sad. So we asked the little guy what happened. He told us he wasn’t allowed to go. So my big angry ass and my road dog at the time decided we had to go now. And it was an emergency.

Chaos ensued. And it got nuts. I mean over the bar fight nuts. And when the cops got there....all white guys....they held the ****er to the ground in the ally and looked away while I made him apologize. No bull****. One of the craziest nights in my life. Then they told him to go back inside, but threw the back door. And then told us to have a good night.

And the education problem in this country is being exacerbated:

In Rural America, Fears About The Future Abound As Fewer Students Go To College

A yellow school bus with snow on the roof chugs up to the front door of Bucksport High School in Maine, where Principal Josh Tripp greets the handful of late-arriving students as they drag themselves inside.

Tripp is just glad they've shown up in a year when school is half online, sports and clubs have been curtailed, and the world can seem as cold and gray as a winter morning in this sparsely populated coastal town.

"Their overall feeling toward education right now is that they've just been beaten down," Tripp says. "Everything about this year has been harder. Certainly being an election year and seeing so much negativity around forecasts of our future, regardless of what political side you're on — there's just a lot of dim and dreary outlooks."

In rural communities like this one, the isolation and uncertainty of the pandemic year are translating into more than teenage angst.

It's driving a dramatic drop in the proportion of students going on to college, threatening the already precarious economies of rural areas and widening their socioeconomic drift from urban and suburban America.

You don’t have to look very hard to find things on the internet that makes the opposite side look douchie.  I find that it is harder and takes more discipline to bite my tongue and know that I don’t need to for the sake of making myself feel better.  People should try it.  It’s good for you.
