Miami Herald: I’m done trying to understand Trump supporters. Why don’t they try to understand me?

Interesting article and obviously an extremely intelligent writer, but you can't make an assertion of total American collapse based on a quote from one Republican candidate somewhere that's just ridiculous.

correct.

if you are attempting to write an article making the point that America is doomed based on the pretext that one persons extreme opinions represent an entire group while using a fake, photoshopped image to support that point, people are going to question the validity of your point.

To be fair, all Republican politicians are exactly the same, so the quote applies to half of the country's politicians, who represent half the country.

If you asked all Republican politicians this question most would dodge it, because unfortunately in today's political climate agreeing with one's opponent is the same as being wrong.

And being wrong costs votes so not agreeing is better.

But I guarantee almost none would say they think god is a white supremacist.

College educated voters are rejecting the GOPs insane ideas so obviously the problem isn’t bad ideas, it’s the education system.

On several right wing think piece publishing outlets, ideas around colleges being shuttered through legislation, research dollars blocked, professors harassed via lawsuits is all being discussed as a way of limiting people’s access to a college education, and thus stopping the spread of “leftism”.

Totally rational, normal people.

Man, Republicans just don't give a **** about their kids.  The deficit, crumbling infrastructure, climate change, student debt and now this.

Laura Ingraham trying to use "demographic changes"  in reference to the Virginia election results as a dog-whistle to whites for 2020 Election.  What she failed to mention is Trump is also losing suburban white folks, especially females.   The GOP is simply not offering policy for Americans period, the more people wake up to it and show their frustration with them at the ballot box, the sooner it may crack the modern day GOP and force them to catch up with the times.

Actual Republicans or the current crop of goo masquerading as Republicans?  While I find it unwise to attach a label to myself (conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, etc), there are many aspects of what is supposed to be conservatism that I find I would be more inclined toward over liberalism.

Caveat... that’s if you strip away any nonsense that has been attached to those words. For instance, “strong family values” does not mean gay people are icky but Imma worship this dude who keeps groping women & cheating on his wives with porn stars. Capitalism does not mean a system that benefits those who already possess capital. Small government does not mean forfeiting good ideas that can help people if it’s going to cut into our lobbyists’ profits.

I think something like the GOP's vague stance on "crippling regulation" has some merit to it, the problem is the regulation they tend to want to get rid of is usually regulation that protects workers.  In some cases I think the GOP's vague generalities could be worked with on a bi=partisan level, but the issue seems to always come up once the specifics are found out.   And I  hate to sound like a broken record, but I really believe the money in politics is what prevents more constructive bi-partisanship and policy that favors people, from getting done.

I think that most regulations create jobs.  Deregulation creates profits.

I think all of those terms are nice sounding buzzwords with little meaning that have been twisted to identify only with modern conservatives.  Except for capitalism which is an actual term, that has been twisted to mean something else by conservatives.

I can only think of two, a more combative relationship with China and easing regulations against gene-edited crops.

Reminds me of my nephew (his parents are Trumpers) asking my son if he was being taught atheism at UMD. The kid is a middle schooler at a Catholic school and was 100% serious.

Y’all can laugh at the War on Thanksgiving all you want, but know that I will be sinking gravy boats “Pearl Harbor” style this and every year.

Trust.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I think it would be amazing if liberals tried to "claim" Thanksgiving, just like we've claimed Nike, the NFL, college and pop culture.

It shouldn't be too hard to get MAGA people to boycott Thanksgiving given its historical origin as a celebration of mutual cooperation with non-white people.
