NYT - Redskins Cheerleaders Describe Trip to Costa Rica that Crossed the Line

Recommended Posts

When the Washington Redskins took their cheerleading squad to Costa Rica in 2013 for a calendar photo shoot, the first cause for concern among the cheerleaders came when Redskins officials collected their passports upon arrival at the resort, depriving them of their official identification.

For the photo shoot, at the adults-only Occidental Grand Papagayo resort on Culebra Bay, some of the cheerleaders said they were required to be topless, though the photographs used for the calendar would not show nudity. Others wore nothing but body paint. Given the resort’s secluded setting, such revealing poses would not have been a concern for the women — except that the Redskins had invited spectators.

A contingent of sponsors and FedExField suite holders — all men — were granted up-close access to the photo shoots.

One evening, at the end of a 14-hour day that included posing and dance practices, the squad’s director told nine of the 36 cheerleaders that their work was not done. They had a special assignment for the night. Some of the male sponsors had picked them to be personal escorts at a nightclub.

really not a good look if true.  Always thought we tried to maintain a higher level of morality than other franchises.  WTF?

If even half of this is true, it's horrendous. More Dan Snyder greed and using people like meat. He does the same with ex-players and current players for that matter. So this is no surprise.

End of Bruce Allen for sure. This is part of his “winning off the field” menu ... wouldn’t shock me if this takes down Snyder as well, if the league decides to come down on him for it.

There is no justification for confiscating passports. The excuse given is straight garbage.

This is literally how human trafficking rings operate. What the **** is wrong with this organization.

When you run your organization like a dumbass, there is nothing totally out of the realm of possibility.

This is ****ing disgusting.

Interviews with dozens of current and former N.F.L. cheerleaders revealed a common perspective: They enjoyed performing at games, developing friendships with other cheerleaders and participating in charity work, which included visiting hospitals and going overseas to entertain military troops. But they were disturbed by some of the extracurricular requirements that put them in what they considered unsafe situations.

this leads me to believe its not just us, and that would almost absolve Snyder and Allen if it's 'common place'.   Not saying it's right.. just how the good ol' boy network of the NFL.

The Redskins’ weeklong trip to Costa Rica in 2013 — for which the cheerleaders were paid nothing beyond transportation costs, meals and lodging, the team said — provides a vivid illustration of how N.F.L. teams have used cheerleaders for far more than sideline dancers during games. Their treatment has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks since two former N.F.L. cheerleaders filed discrimination complaints and described a hostile work environment in which they were often dangled as sex objects for the titillation of male fans away from the games.

The bold and underlined part is referencing a former Dolphins cheerleader who filed this....

It had better not absolve anyone, anywhere

I agree completely... but it looks like the story only happened because a couple girls from the Dolphins squad actually filed a formal complaint and nothing like that happened (to this point) has happened with the Redskins.  In fact, these young women remained anonymous due to a contract, so any sort of legal complaint is likely not to happen.

Quote

The cheerleaders spoke on condition of anonymity because they were required to sign confidentiality agreements when they joined the team.

It's absolutely unacceptable and nobody should be forced to do ANYTHING that makes them uncomfortable.  That itself is the definition of harassment...

This is disgraceful and always gets me so frustrated thinking about something like this happening to a family member or someone I care about. If this is true, someone needs to be fired and whoever is allowing this sort of atmosphere to blossom needs to be gone as well.

Also these women need not worry about the confidentiality agreement, I know that is easier said than done, but the law should protect them and I hope it does.

On another note: To all the women (and men victims) out there. If you feel something is not right, please do not do it. If your gut tells you it is wrong, please do not do it. Your instincts should never be ignored.

Edit: Another thing that bothers me about this is that I have femals friends, super sweet, nice, trusing and at times naive. This could happen to any one of them.

You forget how young a lot of these cheerleaders are, which can be very intimidating for them when all of it happens at once. :(

I saw this as well and, knowing the NY Times is/has been subscription based, saved the article to a PDF file for those who cannot see the link.

This is definitely a black mark on an already beleaguered league as well as the Redskins as an organization.  I would not be surprised to see Congressional inquiries into this.

And for those making references to the five year gap, just look at what long time anchor Tom Brokaw is facing who is years removed from his post.  There will be consequences.

For reasons completely unrelated, I did not renew my season tickets this year.  #GoodCall

This is absolutely deplorable.

I can't get into it now because I'm seething and will get myself banned, but if Bruce isn't gone after this (I would hold him responsible if not Dan), then I'd seriously have to consider backing away from this team.  This is worse than Rapistberger-type **** given the pervasiveness, secrecy, and extent of it.

I was talking a few years ago with someone who used to work there, and they said that Snyder would ask for outtakes from the video footage of these cheerleader trips, and that there was indeed nudity. Never knew if that was true or not, but would not surprise me after reading this. Would not surprise me BEFORE reading this, to be honest.

It's rather clear that I have a very low opinion for Bruce Allen, but it's kind of hard to pin this type of stuff on him.  I'm actually not shocked by this stuff at all.  I'd imagine the recollection of events as described in the article is probably more tame than what really went down.  I just don't think this is the type of thing you can pin on Bruce.  Noted though that the tides turned for the Skins cheerleaders when Dan bought the team.

I've pretty much done that already (re: not renewing season tickets); as far as I am concerned, this slams the door on any chance of me returning as a fan as long as current ownership remains.

Now that the initial story has broken, expect more tawdry details to come out over time.

Crap, I better start saving some money! Maybe I can then join the owners group. Be 0.004% owner.

It's Snyder. Always has been. But I'd expect Bruce to be a willing participant, and thus the fall guy, before the end.

I think this one's probably all Dan, personally. Not that I wouldn't mind Bruce being a sacrificial offering. But I'd be happier if it brought down the Eye of Sauron himself, lol. Didn't some of us say awhile back that the only way Dan would ever be gone is if he got caught up in some sort of scandal like this? Will be interesting to see where this goes.
