NYT - Redskins Cheerleaders Describe Trip to Costa Rica that Crossed the Line

No one, male or female should be forced to do anything they are not comfortable with.  This story is repulsive, and is indicative of a sexist, discriminatory workplace environment.

I am truly sorry for those women that were made to feel trapped.

I am really ashamed to call myself a fan of this organization.

At the very least the NFL should launch an independent investigation into the allegations.

The confiscation of passports is so damning and its the one thing I keep coming back to.

I see no reason to do that. None. It, at best, borders on criminal. And everything that comes after carries a whiff of coercion because of it.

There is zero chance something this terrible happens without the ownership and upper managements blessing.

Doesn't matter if they did. Snyder is responsible for both hiring the people who carried this out and for fostering an environment where this kind of thing could happen. That's enough.

I’m not shocked that other rich suits engage in this kind of horse ****.

But we’re talking about the Redskins doing it.

I wouldn't feel any better about the issue if the Skins name never came up. There needs to be a league-wide drastic change...not just a change to who owns the Redskins. My fandom plays no role in this.

Employers can ask for passports, and employees can say hell no. It can't be mandatory. If you refuse and get fired over it I'd imagine you'd have a very winnable lawsuit.

I’ll just say this and people can take it how they want: this is nothing new. Not to our organization, the NFL, or ANY organization be it pro sports or otherwise.

Yes, these specific allegations are new and pretty shocking to see in text. However, the general objectifying of women and/or towing or crossing the line of sexual harassment/abuse is not something specific to this regime of the Redskins or almost any regime anywhere.

Go read any stories about the “glory days” of the 80’s. Go read about high powered people across the league and across all of society really. This cheerleader thing has been talked about for YEARS now— it’s just the first time it’s been linked to the Redskins specifically.

If you think Snyder and others should be held accountable for this, then that is perfectly fine. But I’d say be prepared to be consistent with that— and I think some people would be STUNNED at the number of people that would fall in that case.

In no way excusing any behavior simply because “lots of people do it,” but I do think it is important for people to realize how insanely widespread this stuff is and how many teams, organizations, corporations, etc are likely at least a little bit guilty for either condoning this type of stuff or at least being ingnorant that it was happening under their noses. Probably a decent chance it happens where you work right now.

I don’t doubt that this kind of stuff goes on elsewhere.  I’m interested to hear other accounts.  But something tells me not every team has stories this bad.  I mean, making the girls escort these rich  terds that keep the lights on in Ashburn is bottom of the barrel.  Maybe it’s like that elsewhere too.  If so, I’d be willing to bet it’s happening with the other questionable owners.

Bang first I want to say I appreciate the the hell out of your post here and I agree with most everything you said the whole

Take the cheerleaders out of the game

Part struk me wrong. While I agree with you that in the age of me too that makes perfect sense once the corks let out of the bottle you can’t put it back in. That’s spilt milk and means nothing now. Otherwise completely agreed with everything you posted and hope to read more of your thoughts on this fine forum

That’s just not enough to me after outlets like Yahoo have this as it’s top story today. I am embarrassed of this team and the people running it today. In a way I’ve never felt before

This is a disgusting thing to have taken place. The bull**** team response makes it worse. People should be fired for this.

Personally I have five kids and just took a few of them to the NFL draft and we all were sporting our Redskins gear in Dallas. In my family I have a set of twins, I have two daughters, and three boys. We all support this team because I was raised a fan and I’m raising Redskins fans. At the draft we were all pointed out by Cowboys fans and took a little friendly heat along the way all in good fun. But after today had the draft come say next week I wouldn’t have attended. This is that horrible to me

This is absolutely disgraceful to all of the female fans of this team. Women are not objects for rich men to gawk at who are forced to go topless and act as escorts for rich guys. And just because they weren’t forced to have sex with those rich guys who the hell cares? If someone treated my daughter this way I honestly would be in jail for murder. This is the latest black eye on this team and this one really is ****ed up.

I’m not ready to throw in my life long fan card yet but damn this has pushed me to the very edge. Going to shut up now and go back to lurking.

Looks like more and more media outlets, most notably ESPN, Deadspin, and CBS it seems, are now running with this. Snyder is going down.

Figures that something like this would take that POS out.

This one ain't going away.

Hopefully it won't.  This is beyond horrible.  It's starts from the top and trickles down.  No way Snyder should survive this

All I can say is if this does end up being the end of Dan Snyder, kudos to whom ever was the first to say they wished for Dan to get caught up in something like this and be forced to sell.

I venture a guess this isn’t going to be enough to sink him though.

Only if there is some proof that Snyder explicitly ordered or condoned it. Mark Cuban had one of his top executives fired for harassment and Cuban himself has been recently accused of fondling a woman at a bar. It doesn’t appear as any of this will lead to him being removed as owner of the Mavs. It is highly unlikely this story “ends” Snyder unless some more very specific details emerge.

With other owners, team, other sports (NBA, NHL)...like I said, the NYT has been running a bunch of different articles talking about what "really" goes on behind the scenes with  professional cheerleaders. I think the Bills dictated how their cheerleaders were allowed to keep their, um, "down there" clean, what types of tampons to use, how long to keep them in...the **** that cheerleaders go though seriously covers the entire gamut...it's a whole lot of WTF. And NFL cheerleaders can be "rented" or paid for by ordinary citizens. Check it out lol:

Hire the Falcons Cheerleaders

Bring the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders to Your Next Event

Thank you for your interest in having the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders at your next event. To request an appearance, please complete the Appearance Request Form.

Paid – Corporate/Individual

Examples: company sales meetings, performances at corporate events, birthday parties, conventions.
Fee as of August 9, 2013:

  • $1,000 two hours/two cheerleaders (two hours/two cheerleader minimum)
  • $1,000 per half day/per cheerleader (four hours/one 20 minute break/two cheerleader minimum)
  • $1,875 per day/per cheerleader (eight hour/one, one hour break/ two cheerleader minimum)

A bunch of schmucks could cobble together $4K and get 4 Falcons cheerleaders sent to their "event" (re: some buds watching the game in their man cave). I it would be considred "Paid - Individual". I know the article reads as if it was a decision by the Redskins to send the cheerleaders to the club or, in an earlier article, to some goober's house, but the reality might just be that the Redskins sent the cheerleaders to their destinations simply because someone paid the fee.

I think its terrible what happened and if Dan had any sense he would get rid of that director immediately and then start an internal investigation.

He has 2 daughters in their young 20's and I doubt he would want them treated this way.

This team is tiring, its impossible to just enjoy Redskins football due to the constant shenanigans.

My guess is if he knew about it and the story happened just like it was described -- its possible.   If he didn't, he's likely ok where he can say heck this employee on his own stepped out of line and they didn't sanction any of it.

The wild card here is does the NFL investigate?  Also I am not sure about the statute of limitations on this but I'd presume the time frame is still ok on that front -- but sometimes legal action happens after a story like this surfaces.

Snyder created the sleazy culture that now defines this franchise.

The he problem is that every other owner knows he’s a pita and a fall guy.  They keep him around because they need someone to keep the spotlight off of their own messes.

That said. I will throw a huge beach party if he’s forced out.  And all y’all are invited!!

(The Redskins said it was team policy to collect passports for all international travel as a security precaution.)

Need clarification, but that doesn't come across as a choice they had.

after the Kirk disaster

Do you remember, (just prior to free agency), before it became official Kirk leaving, wasn't there a report citing Kirk, or an actual quote from Kirk, or simply an attribution from his camp, that Kirk wanted the redskins' cheerleader's uniforms to change?

Or something along those lines.

And if not uniform change then a shift in "philosophy" on how they were displayed or otherwise an alteration to their job duties?

I remember that.

And I kind-of recall the one or two people who commented on it here on ES saying more or less: "glass of milk and bible study,"but  the initial overriding reaction was: "that's weird."

But it was oddly specific.

Maybe Kirk knew something about the redskins underbelly with regards to the cheerleaders. Or maybe his wife did.
