The world comes full-circle (Sorry Tom!)

In 2000, Norv Turner was fired as the head coach of the Washington Redskins after a bitter loss to the New York Giants on his home field. Despite a roster of players that once seemed predestined for greatness, the Redskins disintegrated at home in one of the oldest rivalries in professional football.

In 2003, Jim Fassel was eventually fired as the head coach of the New York Giants after a bitter loss to the Washington Redskins on his home field. Despite a roster of players that once seemed predestined for greatness, the Giants disintegrated at home in one of the oldest rivalries in professional football.

Just returning the favor, Jim!!

Sorry Tom ... Had to do it ... :)

This DID feel like on of those "seal your fate" losses for the Giants.

We have obviously struggled against everyone we've played, so to beat them by 2 TDs (and an extra point!) has to be disheartening for the Giant organization.

This is not the game that sealed Fassel's fate. Fassel has been gone for a couple of weeks now. This only goes to show that he can't do much to get his team up for a game. He lost them. But this game didn't seal his fate. His fate has been determined long before now.

But, this game could have sealed Accorsi's fate from the way Mara made it sound after the game today. I'll give you that.

Yes, Fassel was already on the hot seat, but so was Norv by the time of the Giants game in 2000.

Not trying to rub it in, but today's game was about pride: which team would knock the other team unquestionably out of playoff contention. The game was at Giants Stadium. Had Fassel won this game, and perhaps 2 more, he'd probably still have a job.

It's very much like Norv's loss to the Giants at home in 2000 -- he wasn't fired for his record (we had a winning one at the time) -- he was fired because he failed to coach an amply-talented team to a win in do-or-die time in December at home against a bitter rival with his job obviously on the line. There can be no more stark measure of coaching ability. Norv failed. Fassel failed.

As I said, I'm not trying to rub it in --- I reserve that for my loudmouth friend in Hoboken :) -- I just think its an interesting ... and perhaps eerie parallel.
