Recall an old Bloom County comic.  The theme is that Opus has decided that he wants to be a farmer.  Opus is standing with Milo, wearing overalls, a straw har, with a wheat straw in his teeth.

I actually don’t really mind that our government is engaging China in a trade war. 

 

But because it’s Trump, I’m sure it will be badly botched just like his failed foreign affairs efforts everywhere else. The guy is a walking doormat.

It's depressing that even when Trump wanders ass-backward into a good point like China's trade/manufacturing shennagains, you just know he'll make it worse because there will be no plan, no spine, no follow through, and will end the moment Trump can realize a personal profit.

Maybe this will force our private sector to reduce their reliance on Chinese goods and parts. I have no issue paying more for goods if it means our national supply chain for critical and non-critical items isn't reliant on the Chinese and their disregard for international trade and IP laws.

 

The fact that less countries in the Western world aren't siding with us on this is a sad indictment of Trump's awful foreign policy. If he wasn't such a dick to our partners in EU, they would probably be more likely to band together with us and put more pressure on the Chinese. We already see this with Huawei. Our government is right to try and prevent Huawei's expansion around the world yet none of our foreign partners are listening because this admin burned bridges.

Or, we could have, you know, built a coalition that would create a free trade zone that would have included 40% of the world's GDP, and excluded China.

And I've $10 that says the money didn't go to workers more than dictated by supply and demand.  In other words, Trump's tariffs are helping increase income inequality.

 

This has also happened for other things.  Prices on steel generated in the US have gone up too.

Wow, you've really bought into the talking points by the national security-military-industrial complex hook line and sinker.

 

Maybe they're ignoring the warnings because there isn't a lot of evidence that the concerns are very valid, in the past they've been spied on by US companies supplying the infrastructure, and at least with respect to the Chinese government, there is a longer term incentive to not get caught spying.

 

And it isn't like US companies have been able to ensure security from China, unless the US has been lying about security issues related to China for years, which then of course doesn't help their credibility with respect to Huawei.

I am not interested in engaging in your moral relativism about "well the US spies too". Yeah, no ****. And I would rather our country be in charge of global telecom systems than an undemocratic authoritarian state that is building the world's most advanced surveillance system that is already trampling on people's basic human rights within its borders. There is a massive world of difference between how the Chinese are using telecom surveillance data and how the US has used it. There is no such thing as private corporations operating in China. Allowing Huawei to build telecom systems around the world is essentially asking the Chinese Communist Party, perhaps the most repressive government in the entire world at at the moment, to have access and control over the worlds digital data and communication systems.

 

And really this isn't the only reason to be engaging in a trade war with the Chinese. It's the illegal and unfair trade practices, piss poor labor laws, IP theft, their brutal crackdown on Uighur's to secure trade routes out of Central Asia, etc.
