You guys discuss taking a DE/DT in the 1st like it's really a possibility...Why?

I realize we have a glaring need for a Pass rushing DE and maybe even a stud DT to fill voids on our defense...

My only question is...What makes you think that's what we'll do?

I would be more inclined to believe that we will do what we did last year, rather than drop a 1st for a DL-men stud in the draft...

I can see us trading a 1st for some real good DE or signing one out of free agency before we draft one...

Not sure if I agree with that, but that seem the more likely scanario!

Here's a thought...Is it possible to franchise(or transition) tag Champ and trade him straight up for a really good DE or so....

or whatever the value would be in comparison?draft picks and what not?

Then sign Champs replacement out of Free agency and maybe pick up another DE/DT in free agency as well?

This would give us many more options come draft day with our top 3 picks!!

Maybe snag Winslow...Who knows...?

or that stud safety?you guys talk about all the time...(i forget...I rarely see many college games)

Well first of all I believe we need to build through the draft however, there are no good D linemen, well none good enough to provide immediate assistance. We should sign decent UFA's (Winstrom? Ogunleye?) and use the draft for depth and build for the future. I don't think we should trade away our [high] picks for RFA's, that way is just too expensive.

I believe in building in the draft for one and all the talk about is because there will be public outrage if we draft another offensive skill player with the pick instead of addressing our obvious weakness defensive line.

Now if the first pick is used to get a free agent D lineman then its basically the same thing.

Well there should be public outrage Navy if you pass on a top guy like Tommie Harris or Will Smith but there's a good chance they might no be there when we pick(unless we lose the rest or most of our games). If the top ones are gone you pick the best available athelete or trade down and aquire more selections. I think the only way they can get away with not taking a d-lineman is if they get a good one in free agency. I don't know if there's anyone that great there either. Whatever is to happen they need to improve the front four, draft a corner(can always use one), a TE(don't know if he matters in Coach's offense though) and just keep improving general depth. I believe year three will be a very good one. You have to admit, last offseason was largely successful and with another year of them being familiar with the systems and one another they'll be much better off than starting all over again with new coaches and players. :2cents:

the problem is there are no "stud" de or dt this year...

and from those that are left would you take one of those over a top flight rb or wr?

I'd still draft the rb and wr, and then turn around and trade them or something like that.

but if we could trade a #1 for a top young dt or de now i'd do it, but again they'd have to be young, and we would need them signed for atleast 4 years

I don't care where we get guys at DE at DT that are NFL-level pass rushers -- draft, FA, the local Y, correctional institutions, friggin' Rigel V -- just so long as we GET them.

I'm confident we will, though, because our front office is on the case. :)

Anyone seen Dewayne Robertson, Kevin Williams, Ty Warren, Jimmy Kennedy this year for their respective teams? My point is rarely does a player in this position have a break out year his first year. Heck, the G-men are questioning whether they have a bust in Joseph.

I might almost be more interested in signing a FA DT like Bryan Young of the Rams, or Robaire Smith of the Titans, and then getting a young DT in the draft to groom. Maybe the kid from LSU everyone is talking about.... Lavalais or something.... a guy that can be drafted in the 3rd round perhaps.

Maybe the first round pick does go for Winslow (Troupe), or Taylor the safety from Miami, or Kevin Jones as an impact back.

Of course, come draft time I'm wanted to trade down and accumulate picks while having identified kids I think will be sounds draft picks that fill a plethora of holes on our team.
