I can't get this idea out of my head, help....

It's obvious this "team" still needs some radical turnover to turn the corner and compete with teams like, Penn State maybe. But two rules on building a team are that you should build it fast as fans and owners are generally not patient, and you should build through the draft, not free agency. Unfortunately, these two rules aren't compatible. So I see only one solution.

Trade Stephen Davis.(next offseason)

1. A lot of media and talk here is devoted to the fact we don't have a QB to fit this offense. I don't think we have a RB that fits this offense either. Any team with a RB like Davis should make it a goal to get the guy the ball 20+ times a game. But in all three games, even before the game was well out of hand(playing from behind), Davis wasn't even close to being on pace for 20+.

2. I think a RB in this offense should be like a Marshall Faulk type player who is geared to run outside(where Davis has gotten most of his yards this year), and can play like a WR past the line of scrimmage. Then I wouldn't be so upset seeing Marty calling passing plays on first down. The only way Davis really fits in this offense is short yardage, where Bennett has shown he is just as effective.

3. Of course I would start the bidding at two firsts and go from there depending on who wants him worse. But considering his yards per carry I don't think it would be to hard to find someone to consider the deal. And this kind of deal always works out for the team who corrals picks.

4. Our defensive line needs an overhaul. This makes me want to do the deal the most. The next two drafts are predicted to be deep in finding defensive prospects along the front four and multiple picks could lead to a quick shore up.

My only reservation to my radical idea is that there is no franchise QB coming out next year worth an early to mid first even if we had more than one. I'd hate to cripple both skill positions next year in the backfield to work on all other areas that need turnover to work under Marty's system. If Banks shows some more signs of being a franchise QB over the rest of this season, it would give me a little more confidence in my idea.

While I understand your thoughts on this and have considered it myself, it doesn't make a lot of sense to trade a 1,300 plus RB in his prime. Change the system!!! Personally, I liked Norv's system.I just didn't like him as a head coach. If you want to run the WCO, then get a fullback (centers) who can catch the ball. Let SD grind it out. I'm not knocking the Centers cut,at least if what was said is true. But we need that kind of back. And A wr who has great hands and runs precise routes. Henry Ellard like.

I would look to trade Bruce Smith. Others would be Big Daddy, Westbrook, Shade and even Barber. We need to get better and younger. We need to either get "marty type players" or have Marty adjust to his players. Since he seems unwilling to dom this, then....

Marty needs to stop this Cowboy crap and be willing to adjust NOW, until he can get the players that he wants....

Trade Westbrook, Shade(if anybody even wants him,so micorwaved) and 3rd for a polished QB that is at least effective like Trent Green. Throw in Big Daddy, if anyone will ever want him also. Bruce Smith has seen his last season. Green was on point when he said it was time to hang it up.

At least he sees that next year will be so much sweeter when ALL (make no mistake it will be) the dead weight will be gone!

Nah, ya goot akeep Davis. We just have to use him. I agree with some of the earlier comments. There are players on this team that need to be removed.

Westbrook: Forget it baby, your outta here.

Barber: Thank God Snyder didn't pull the trigger and extend the contract

Big Daddy: See ya, Stubby cost more or your a$$ would have been gone first

Shade: Need I say more

Bruce Smith: He is becoming a lesion on this team

I actually liked the play of lang this year and he should be considered to compete for a starting DE job nextyear. he seems to be the only one that plays with passion on this friggin defense.

As much as I like Steven Davis his durability worries me. Is he over that ankle sprain yet? He seems to get up limping an awful lot. Was it the sprain or did he tweek something else that caused him to limp off the field earlier today? Would love to see Davis pound the ball more but I dont know if he can take the pounding.

i'm not w/o reservations w/respect to RB as well..davis is as much an overpaid multi-back as anything else..he was finding some cutback lanes early on, and they've tried to run him on consecutive downs, but it just hasn't been there..

art had mentioned trading davis too, i just don't think he'd yield the level of value that's been expressed..but if he could,it would be foolish not to..cause really, backs that can exploit open holes are a dime-a-dozen..beyond that, davis brings decent vision and power, but for $90m,that isn't enough..

i have little faith in tony banks..he needs to get up to speed regarding the playbook..stating he has 40% of the playbook down is probably misleading..i mean, he probably knows his responsibility on 100% of the running plays..100% of plays where only a single rec'r releases into the pattern..screens-?..they don't have many additional options anyhow..i'll be kind-70%..

here's the problem: the meat of what he doesn't know is the difference between running this or any offense effectively..thus,winning or losing..the core,he's cruising around 1%..still,he was an improvement,oy..

i'm not getting why bruce smith is the voice of the team?..why is that??..it's completely unacceptable and he's insubordinate...AGAIN!!..at the very least,he's benched!! he's proven he doesn't belong out there anyway..at the moment,i can only hail walsingham!!smile.gif..

What polished QBs are out there to be had? Jeff Blake? That won't happen until the end of the season and then he'll probably be taken by Houston in the expansion draft.

You need to have a foundation to build on

Right now on offense our foundation include Samuels,Davis,Jansen and Gardner and the rest are filler.

Defense we have Lavar,Smoot,Champ and if we resign him K Lang.

We may end up keeping Banks and hopefully hve Sage in fr a few series

Trading Stephen Davis is clearly not the answer. Not only would the cap implications be prohibitive, but Davis is as adept at catching passes as he is at running the ball. He fits the WCO just fine. Clearly they need help on both of he lines.

I'd listen to any offer. There aren't any 'sacred cows' on this 0-3 team.

I was toying with the idea of trading Davis earlier...to make it work, though, you've got to get Herschel Walker-like returns on the trade. A few years ago, the Cards made a terrific deal with the Chargers on the Ryan Leaf deal - the trouble is that none of the players the Cards got from the draft picks turned out.

I'm for getting rid of Westbrook and Alexander right now - first 3rd rounder takes both of them.

It would be painful to move Davis at this point because that cap hit is spread out so much. Remember guys, when he signed, this deal essentially was a 3-year deal worth $11 million or so. Davis has a $6.5 million bonus. He's in year two of a seven-year spread. So, we haven't taken a lot of his bonus off the table yet.

His base salary is $3 million next year. I think it's likely you have to rework him again next year, because it will be a tough thing to keep him after next season when his salary escalates. Davis is running hard. He did bruise his knee, but, he is running hard. He's just not getting a chance to run much. He hasn't had a real chance to atone for his fumble problems, but, he is doing what he can on the chances he's getting.

Don't throw out Davis unless you are sure he can be replaced, tough decision.

BTW, don't knock his performance, he does need 20+ runs to get his yardage. I do think you need an OC.

I think I read that Marty "got" 30 of the players on the current roster. He should have his team next year for the most part.

Short of a miracle bursting forth I don't think there are any franchise QBs in the 2002 draft. I hated the QC pick but after checking the prospects other than Vick, Breese and Weinche I didn't think much of what was available. What hurt us was our abismal dead money cap situation. We couldn't bid on any decent QB. Decent, still not franchise and I do not see that changing next year also.

I hate to say this but we jointly are in the "so what" position. If we cut someone so what, they should be available at vet minimum. If they were any good we wouldn't cut them. If they were average journey men we wouldn't cut them.

Do any of the guys suggested here pass the so what test?
