MONTREAL (AP) -- Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips, who was released by Calgary of the CFL in October, appeared in Quebec Court on Thursday after being charged with sexual assault.

Phillips, who starred at the University of Nebraska, was also charged with assault and uttering threats. Police say the incident involving his girlfriend took place on Nov. 27 in Montreal.

Phillips, 28, was remanded into custody until Friday after he failed to post $1,000 bail.

Phillips was released by Calgary on Oct. 10, for disrupting practice by arguing with coach Jim Barker over the team's offensive strategy. He gained 486 yards on 107 carries, with one touchdown, this season.

Phillips was released in May by the Montreal Alouettes for failing to meet what the team said were "minimum behavioral standards." Phillips insisted it was because he had demanded a major pay raise.

During the 2002 season, Phillips walked out on the Alouettes while demanding a raise in his $43,000 salary. He returned a few days later and helped the Alouettes win the Grey Cup.

He was drafted sixth overall by the St. Louis Rams in 1996. A year later he was released by the Miami Dolphins. In 1999, he was released by the San Francisco 49ers for insubordination.

Due to a police record in the United States, Phillips needed a government permit, renewable each year, to play in Canada.

While at Nebraska, Phillips pleaded no contest to domestic violence in a confrontation with a girlfriend

When does your professional athletic career come to a point where you're no longer headline news because I for one am sick of hearing about Phillips and his latest dumb felony or misdemeanor. He's a lost cause, he never did crap in the NFL and because I didn't graduate from Nebraska, I really don't care what happens to him. Maybe he'll get locked up for several years this time so I don't have to receive annual updates on his criminal status.

Tommie Frazier never got a chance to play in the NFL and was the real star on those teams. His accomplishments and character overshadow everything about Phillips who is a criminal. Too bad he has blown all his chances. He ought to talk to Irving Fryar who I met as a freshman in college and hated until he got his life together. Nebraskans are sick that he ever wore the uniform.
