TK
http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=63183&ran=240817 TV fans end up the losers watching 4-8 Skins, Giants By BOB MOLINARO, The Virginian-Pilot © December 5, 2003 Skins tyranny: When a couple of 4-8 teams like the Redskins and Giants play on local TV at 1 p.m. Sunday, the real losers are football fans eager to see a game that matters. Fox isn’t about to break tradition and bring local viewers action of the Eagles and Cowboys playing for first place in the NFC East, which, after all, is only the game of the week. Curious comedowns: Of the 12 NFL teams that made the playoffs last season, eight have losing records this fall. Blue chip: Courtside at the North Carolina-Illinois basketball game Tuesday night, ESPN’s Dick Vitale said — or shouted — that the Tar Heels start five future NBA players. All recruited by Matt Doherty, for what that’s worth. Rambling: It’s very, very early, but nobody’s looked better this college basketball season than Georgia Tech. A suggestion: For U.Va.’s New Year’s Eve night game against Iowa State, fans who show up at University Hall with lampshades on their heads should get in free. Numbers game: If college football had any shame, it would be embarrassed that 6-6 teams — come on down, Kansas, UCLA and Georgia Tech — are participating in bowls. One-on-one: The rivalry between rookies Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James is 2-0, with Denver winning both games and Anthony outplaying James two times. LeBron still leads the league in hype, though. Tiger beat: What team deserves to meet Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, Southern Cal or LSU? I’ve got no dog in the fight, but it’s hard for me to believe that a one-loss team from the ferociously competitive SEC is not deserving of a shot at the national title. Pitching in: After signing with Boston, Curt Schilling went on the Internet to join a chat room discussion with surprised Red Sox fans. Schilling said he needed to “clear up some information.” Mouthing off: No one seems to want to acknowledge that the brawl at the end of the Florida State-Florida game came as a natural result of an afternoon full of player taunts. Trash talking is not only tiresome, it can be dangerous. Imitating art: In the past four weeks, William Green has been arrested for marijuana and drunken driving, suspended one game by the Cleveland Browns, banished for what is likely the remainder of the season by the NFL and allegedly stabbed by his fiance. And officials complain that ESPN’s “Playmakers” misrepresented the league. Going public: Lawrence Taylor’s confessions are interesting to those who thought he was an altar boy. Dropped: Larry Fitzgerald’s Heisman bandwagon was forced to call for road service after Miami held the Pittsburgh wide receiver to only three receptions for 26 yards. Even so, the pros covet him no less. Isn’t it rich: Amid reports of pitcher Kevin Brown possibly moving from the Dodgers to Yankees, the L.A. Times notes that Brown has earned $1,293,103.45 for each of his last 58 victories. Idle thought: Just like that, Brett Favre seems to have lost it — his arm, his touch, his leadership skills. Call it a career: If you think Bruce Smith’s swan song is unremarkable, check out Emmitt Smith’s contribution to the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday — one carry for minus-3 yards. Joe Sick
Message to Virginia-Pilot viewers. If you don't like the home team, buy a dish or go to a sportsbar. I don't get it. I would rather watch an 0-15 Redskins team that whatever else Fox was offering. Of course, I hate the Pilot anyway. They give more story space to NC teams than VA teams. Spear
These sportswriters/casters just do not understand the concept of being a fan of a team rather than a league. It's like he's preaching, but there's no choir.
Leonard Washington
i've originally from that area and there's a pretty large cowboy and eagle following in that area, so i would imagine these are the only folks complaining.
