Zen-like Todd
It HAS to be the Freddie Jones vs. Sam Shade matchup. Norv has always been good at taking advantage of the weakest link on a D, and he knows that this matchup is it. Not only that, but it will be difficult to have one of our LBs shadow since we're obviously going to be concerned with Flutie scrambling for big gains. I fully expect this to frustrate me this weekend.
Brave
You're exactly right, TCO. San Diego has fine WRs, but they may be offset by our CBs. Their running game probably won't be up to form yet. I don't think we have an answer for Jones ... he's liable to have a big day. Shade's gonna need some help. VoR
I'd say it's Tim Dwight vs. either Smoot, Greer, or Green. I'd prefer to stick him with Green--he's the only one who can keep up with his speed. And it's safe to assume that Norv's got at least one reverse lined up for us. Guess who's gonna run that--Dwight. He'll definitely try to take advantage of LaVar aggressiveness. We also have to worry about Dwight vs. our punt coverage. This will probably be their stiffest test yet. Hope everything is ironed out in that department.
Zen-like Todd
If I didn't know better (actually, I don't), I'd day you had a Dwight obsession. I think Dwight is short for designated white guy.
VoR
Dwight maybe white, but he's faster than anybody we have on our team at this point.
Zen-like Todd
Conjured up from the recesses of my addled brain is an image of a fireman's competition on ESPN last summer. They had a celeb athlete bit, and the two competitors were Sam Shade and Tim Dwight. Dwight schooled Shade going up and down the stairs, but I believe Shade caught up on the dragging/pushing bits. Not really surprising.
RySkins
Freddie Jones is definately the one I fear the most when the Chargers have the ball. I'm not sure I agree that Norv is good at picking on an opposing weakness, but he has to know that we struggle covering tight ends. Their wide-receivers don't scare me one bit. There is no doubt in my mind that Bailey, Smoot, and Green can lock up Conway, Graham and Dwight all game long. VoR is right about Norv having at least one reverse planned for us. Thats one play that Norv ran a lot in his tenure here.
indyskinsfan
L. Tomlinson is expected to have his number called until we convince Norv to not even try it. This is to constantly keep us looking for the run, so Flutie tries rollouts to assist his height disadvantage. Flutie will be looking to "pass", since one advantage Shade has is "run" stoppage, something he really doesn't want to dare with Shade and his moment to prove his worth this year. Flutie will flip to the TE at Shade to challenge him. Norv knows how to get under Shade's skin, but Shde must deliver on every play, as Norv will try to catch him sleeping and occupy Terrell with deep and clear out patterns He will have an attitude and Marty will have him direct it out on the field. Barber will actually come to his rescue often, since his speed and hits will be telling. Great coaches know how to channel energy! Along the backside of the line, lurks L. A. and Marco, with Smoot. All three love to hit. Look for Norv to bbait Bruce (Flutie knows Bruce's pace and tendancies) and tthen flip to Tomlinson, with a convoy aimed at Champ, to build his teams confidence in the offense. Look for Champ, Bruce and the MLB to negate that element and send the SD offense back to the bench. Junior Seau's not even flinching and no gauge can measure the intensity he will bring. It will be Bennett's job to "cool" him down , good luck, he'll need it. No one person stands out more on their defense, which as a spiritual leader, he wears it well. Stephen Davis must absolutely be "decisive" on his acceleration and choosing of the holes, because Seau has one of the most explosive back-side pursuits in all of football, even if he's slower, he still packs a sure wallop, like LaVar Arrington and Ray Lewis. The QB situations for both teams is even, since George will be working with a new offensive scheme, calling his own plays at times (which takes some time to adjust), and the question of taking more serious hits from a sure nasty defense. The WR advantage is in the Skins corner, with the Skins and SD Special Teams being upgraded on both teams. redman
Originally posted by Brave:San Diego has fine WRs, but they may be offset by our CBs. What? The Chargers' starting WR's are Curtis Conway and Jeff Graham. They're only fine WR's if you're into nostalgia for the mid-90's Chicago Bears roster, which wasn't even fine at the time. Those guys should be totally overmatched by Bailey, and should have all they can handle even now in Smoot. Tim Dwight, who as the #3WR would be matched up with Green, will also be inferior to his defensive coverage. I agree that he's the most dangerous WR they have, but their O-line problems mean that 3 WR's will spread their pass protection awfully thin. The problem we will have is Freddie Jones, because our CB's will be busy covering the WR's. I think we're going to put 8 in the box, to prevent Flutie from scrambling and to prevent them from rushing the football. We'll dare them to pass on our CB's, and we'll likely double cover Jones on 2nd and 3rd and long. Arrington and Barber will be all over the place and hopefully will have Flutie on the run all night. Arrington will have at least 10 tackles, and possibly as many as 12-15. ------------------ "Loosen up, Sandy baby. indyskinsfan
I plucked this off the www.nfl.com site for the Chargers “I’ve always been a jock my whole life. NavyDave
I bet Coach Marty knows that Shade is his weakess link ging into the Charger gae as well so he will get help from barber and Lavar covering the TE meaning that Jones could spy Flutie ------------------ Take a sip of the Marty Kool Aid and Believe
Hog Fever
We know Norv is the O coordinator there so…… The Chargers will have an impressive 1st drive and then the offense will tank. If by chance they do start establishing a running game, look for them to go to the pass almost exclusively. ------------------ "To the Smootmobile"
TennesseeCarl
I think our DTs ought to permit Ladanian Tomlinson several good runs up the middle (no more than 7-8 yds.). Then I'd have the DEs fail to tackle LT on sweeps. Once Norv sees he has the run established we won't see it again and can focus on stopping the passing game. Terry
Perhaps the key to keeping Freddy Jones away from Shade is for Marco to generate some pressure on his side, and hopefully force Jones to stay in and block more than they would like. And that depends on Bruce applying pressure on his end. And if Lavar is lining up next to Marco and generates a threat to Flutie from that side, then that would be another reason to keep Jones in. bulldog
In my opinion, the San Diego game is going to be the showcase for LaVar Arrington. None of what the team was doing in camp in terms of matching him up all up and down the line was utilized in the games, and that was by design. Flutie is 38 years old and while still mobile is not going to match Arrington and Barber who run 4.5's............ Look for Arrington to be used as a disruptor blitzing not only from the outside but up the gut as well on certain plays to put heat on Flutie. The key to this game is turnovers. The Chargers have as much turnover as the Redskins and are also implementing a new system. Their primary back has been with the team for little of the summer work and has not taken a lot of NFL shots yet. Tomlinson could put the ball on the ground on Sunday a couple of times.
