TK
http://www.redskins.com/story.asp?ContentID=12349 Ramsey Sits Out Thursday Practice 12/04/2003 By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey did not participate in practice Thursday and his status remains doubtful for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. He re-aggravated his sore right foot in Wednesday afternoon’s practice when he slipped and fell during a passing drill. “It’s still pretty sore and I’m taking it day-to-day to see if I can get back out there,” he said on Thursday. “It’s a frustrating process and I’m trying to do all I can to get out there and play.” Prior to Thursday's practice, Ramsey said that, even while he was throwing and moving well on Wednesday, his foot felt tender as he dropped back to pass. “I could tell that if I took a misstep, or if I got stepped on or I slipped, that it would be sore,” he said. The second-year quarterback, who missed last Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints and was forced to miss most of the Week 11 Miami game due to a mild concussion, said he has been concerned about how his injured foot would impact his throwing motion during games. Ramsey must be able to plant his right foot securely and push off it to throw downfield passes in Steve Spurrier’s offense. “That’s one of my concerns,” he said. “My shoulder can get sore, my back can get sore. I’m not throwing it as smoothly as I would be if I was able to push off it and transfer that momentum to my arm. I’m throwing a little jerkier that I have just because I have to get the ball out. It’s a concern. “I’m just going to have to find a way to throw without pushing off my foot or just let it rest and get better. And for this to get better, it’s going to have to take a little more than just staying off of it for a week to get better.” If Ramsey is unable to play Sunday, Tim Hasselbeck would be the projected starter and rookie Gibran Hamdan would be the backup. Hasselbeck, who started last Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, received the bulk of reps in practice. “There’s definitely more of a comfort level [with the offense], and that translates to confidence, but it needs to translate into playing better—scoring more touchdowns and scoring more points,” Hasselbeck said. “That’s what needs to happen if I end up playing Sunday.” Ramsey said it would be up to the team's trainers and medical staff to decide if it's best that he not play again for the remainder of the season. He may have offseason surgery on his foot.
bulldog
the Redskins are not going to lose much by having Ramsey get a head start on 2004 by having his foot surgery now. the team is 4-8 and with Hasselbeck's mobility and better health the club has a better chance to steal a game or two down the stretch. besides it would be valuable to see if Hasselbeck can improve as defenses start to see what he is capable of doing, shut those things down and force him and the coaches to expand the offense. Awesome
Yep, Ramsey needs to get that surgery ASAP so that he can have a full, healthy offseason under his belt going into 2004. Everyone around here has been gripnig that he needs as many snaps as he can get. I agree, but those snaps need to be healthy ones. What's the point of putting him out there if he's not healthy? We've seen how the bumps and bruises have negatively affected his game over the second half of the season, and I see no point in Ramsey getting anymore playing time this year until he's healthy; but that's not going to happen because he has a fracture in his right foot that won't completely heal till he has surgery on it. bulldog
I am also of the belief that with the frustrations and injuries in 2003 and is reduced productivity in recent weeks that Ramsey could benefit from sitting and watching for a few games. @DCGoldPants
I agree with Bulldog. Get that fixed now and be rehabbing it before the Dallas game. That way he's ready for the 1st mini-camp and any other bumps and bruises have more time to heal.
Phat Hog
I agree that he needs to get as many snaps as he can, but not at the expense of making his existing foot injury worse… especially with nothing to play for but pride.
Cskin
alright...I'm changing my position...before I said if he's deemed healthy to play he should play....but that was before I realized it had drastically changed his throwing motion and could potentially cause lingering soreness and damage to his shoulder. Shut him down, get the surgery....get healhty... then come back next hear and wing it.
