There are some who would like to see the Skins sign McAlister--I offer this as a reminder.

Ravens bench 'franchise player' McAlister

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Ravens will be without their "franchise" player for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers.

The Ravens on Saturday benched starting cornerback Chris McAlister for Sunday's game due to an unspecified violation of team rules.

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that McAlister missed curfew on Thursday night and skipped Friday morning's team meeting. He reported back just as the team was prepared to leave the hotel for practice and was notified by coach Brian Billick that he would not accompany the team for the rest of the weekend.

"Chris will do whatever he wants this weekend," Billick told the newspaper. "He and I will reconvene early next week and go from there. We've got a game to play this weekend, and I have a team to orchestrate. Chris will make his plans accordingly and be back to Baltimore on Monday."

It is unknown if the Ravens plan to dock McAlister a game check.

Trying to avoid Hurricane Isabel, the Ravens flew to the West Coast on Wednesday night. McAlister grew up in Pasadena, California and was seen with his parents on Thursday afternoon.

Baltimore will move free safety Gary Baxter to McAlister's cornerback spot and start Will Demps at free safety. Baxter started 14 games at cornerback last season before switching to safety.

Designated as a "franchise" player, McAlister, 26, signed a one-year qualifying offer for $5.962 million in the offseason after talks on a long-term agreement broke down.

The Ravens have been concerned with McAlister's off-the-field behavior. Last month, he was pulled over for speeding and charged with driving under the influence in Fairfax County, Virginia. In 2000, McAlister was arrested on misdemeanor marijuana possession charges, which were subsequently dropped due to lack of evidence.

Known as one of the league's top cover corners, McAlister has been a starter since his rookie campaign in 1999. He is usually given the task of covering the opponent's top receiver.
