Redskins | Russell To Give Redskins First Shot - from www.KFFL.com

Tue, 2 Dec 2003 06:50:24 -0800

Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins DT Darrell Russell, who the Redskins signed after returning from a drug suspension, said he wants to talk with the Redskins before exploring free agency after this season. "Whether we get to free agency or not, the Redskins have the first crack," Russell said. "I wouldn't disrespect them like that. They gave me an opportunity, a chance. If I'm going to go anywhere, my first place is to go here, go to the [negotiating] table here and see how things go."

I don't know if that moral clause will be needed.

Washington seems to be some sort or rehab center or something.

i.e.,

Gardener - no problems here. He goes elsewhere...problems arise.

Russell - so far so good.

A. Connell - no major problems. He goes elsewhere....problems.

Westbrook - a pain here, but...to get benched by the Bengals...that's pretty low.

I like Russell, I was all for him coming here, but you always could have the type of player that could be benched by the Bengals.

Exactly...sign him now and that's one less position we have to worry about filling in the offseas (we all know the other DT is going to be Sapp :(). Then we can use draft picks on DE. I think Russell will turn out fine and I certainly like the attitude of this quote.

The thing about Russell is, he is still a question mark, not just mentally and off the field, but on the field too. It is very hard to judge his performance this year as a marker for his potential mainly because he was signed by us COLD. No training camp, no practice, no preseason games........NOTHING FOR 2 YEARS. Now how exactly are you supposed to be thrown into games and be expected to make an impact under those circumstances? On other hand, we don't want another Daryl Gardner situation where we are letting a potential monster in the middle get away over an extra million or so. D-Line is the TOP PRIORITY, imo and if the coaches/FO see something in Russell that we haven't seen yet, then they better let Snyder know and know soon, so they can pull the trigger before the end of the season.

I'm with Art on this one. So of you guys are basically stroking Russell, when he's made some plays here and there (as Spurrier would say) but I wouldn't say he's set the world on fire. I wouldn't mind having him back, but at this point I kinda expected him to be setting himself apart from some of our other DT's and that hasn't happened. I have a feeling he's gonna want some big money and isn't going to get it. Thats why ultimately I think he will resign for us. I wish he and Dalton would step and become a force inside.....that way we would only need some DE's on the D-line this offseason.

Spurrier sounded much less than impressed with D-Russ last night on the radio. When asked about Russell, Spurrier just said, "Well, he hasn't shown up much this year." I don't know he meant he hasn't shown up for meetings, or hasn't shown up much in the games, but Spurrier seems to rarely call someone out individually like that unless he feels the guy isn't giving enough effort. Interesting how everyone here is in such a rush to re-sign him. I don't get it.

What you have to think about here is that Darrell Russell is THREE seasons removed from his all-pro year. Will he EVER regain that all-pro form?

I've noticed Dalton a lot more than I've noticed Russell out there. I don't make a move for Russell until he starts to show he can still play some and even then, I do it ONLY at a very team friendly sort of deal.

Who was that masked man above?

I think they are not playing him as much so he doesn't build a "big contract" next season. Right now nobody is paying attention to him outside of the Skins because he hasn't played much. The Skins know by now his true potential and I think it will be big. After a full year of training, etc. he will be a monster and signed very reasonably since his playing time has not been significant. We do not need to showcase this guy!

I hope they plan on giving him these next 4 games to find out what D. Russell has. There is no reason he shouldn't be starting opposite of Dalton. Give him time to play. It's not like we are bidding for a playoff spot anymore. Let him play and sign him up. He can't be any worse than anything we've had here. He's got skills that are rarely found at that position. With an addition to the line that will enable him to get more one-on-one matchups. Which means for things blowing up in the backfield.
