North Carolina is child bride destination; bill could end it

Known for its coastlines, mountains and the state that was “first in flight,” North Carolina has also developed a more dubious reputation recently: as a regional destination for adults who want to marry children.

State lawmakers are nearing passage of a bill that could dampen the state’s appeal as the go-to place to bring child brides — but would still leave it short of a national push to increase the age to 18. The proposed legislation would raise the minimum marriage age from 14 to 16 and limit the age difference between a 16-year-old and their spouse to four years.

“We will have moved the needle and made North Carolina no longer at the very bottom of the barrel of states,” said Drew Reisinger, the register of deeds in Buncombe County. But, he said, “we’re still going to be putting a lot of children in harm’s way.”

Reisinger said the county, which includes the popular tourist city of Asheville, is a destination for many adults and child brides from nearby states such as Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee — all of which have raised the minimum marriage age in recent years.

Two-thirds of the marriage applications in Buncombe County last year that involved at least one person under 18 originated from people who lived outside of North Carolina, Reisinger said, noting that a 49-year-old man and 17-year-old girl recently came from Kentucky seeking a license.

“North Carolina is one of the friendliest states in the South to give them safe haven,” he remarked.

The state is currently one of 13 that allow children under 16 to wed, according to Unchained at Last, a nonprofit organization that advocates ending child and forced marriages in the U.S. Nine of those states have no set minimum age, the group says, relying instead on case law or a judge’s ruling.

Harvey Weinstein Can Appeal Rape Conviction, New York Court Says

Harvey Weinstein was granted a request to appeal his rape and sexual assault conviction before New York’s highest court, a court spokesperson said Wednesday. “Harvey lives to fight another day,” his attorney, Arthur Aidala, told Page Six. The disgraced Hollywood producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison after a February 2020 conviction on two counts of committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree and one count of third-degree rape. (He was acquitted of several other charges, including predatory rape, which carried a possible life sentence.) “Weinstein is a desperate man,” Douglas Wigdor, who represented several of the mogul’s victims, said in a statement to NBC News, “but we are confident that New York’s highest court will ultimately reject his appeal and affirm... the trial court’s conviction and sentence.”

Eric Weinberg: Scrubs writer and producer charged with 18 sexual assaults

Eric Weinberg, who was an executive producer and writer on hit US comedy series Scrubs, has been charged with 18 counts of sexual assault.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney said Mr Weinberg "relied on his Hollywood credentials to lure young women for photo shoots where he allegedly sexually assaulted them".

The alleged incidents, dated between 2014 and 2019, involved five women.

His lawyer has previously called the accusations a "blatant smear campaign".

Set in a hospital, Scrubs ran on TV from 2001 to 2010 and won two primetime Emmy Awards. It starred Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke.

Mr Weinberg's other TV work includes the US series Californication and Anger Management.

Harvey Weinstein Convicted of Sex Crimes in Los Angeles

The former Hollywood film producer was found guilty of raping one woman, but the jury found him not guilty or could not decide on other charges.

Harvey Weinstein, once a film colossus who wielded immense power in Hollywood, was found guilty on Monday of raping and sexually assaulting an actress in 2013, but jurors found him not guilty of one charge and could not decide on three other counts.

The verdict, delivered by jurors in Los Angeles, was the second sex crimes conviction for Mr. Weinstein, 70, who was found guilty nearly three years ago of sexual assault and rape in New York. It served as a backstop for keeping Mr. Weinstein in prison, given that New York’s highest court has agreed to review his conviction there.
