We’re broken as a society.

We've been in decline for decades IMO. Thatcher and Reagan neoliberal, austerity nonsense and 'there is no such thing as society' BS laid the foundation for the angry, violent dysfunctional society we now have. We live to work with hardly any quality of life. 78 percent of Americans live paycheck to paycheck or work multiple jobs and stress about money 24/7. The GOP decries welfare spending and love their favorite buzzword Socialism, but fail to grasp they are the ones who made such spending necessary.

I don’t think it’s that bad. We have issues, but we also have more equality and liberties then ever before.  Our ability to examine our society is greater than ever before. Are we Medusa? Will looking into a mirror turn us into stone?

We do much more kicking the can down the road than anything else. We have massive issues friend - massive. Texas and Tennessee just passed bills to allow conceal carry without a permit. We're a powder-keg and much of it is economically derived IMO. Upward mobility is harder than ever before. But, I hope you're right in that it's not as bad as I think it is.

@Chump Bailey I think you have to look at the bigger picture though. There are bad people out there, but I think as a society we are more inclusive than ever before. Imagine being a homosexual in any other era? And, I know race relations is a huge topic today and I don't want to discount that, but we are usually complaining about individual citizens publicizing their beliefs. There's never been a better time in this country to be something other than a white male and that's a lot of progress that we often gloss over.

That is something we can certainly celebrate and quite true.

At least a half dozen states are doing the same.

Wyoming is trying to pass a bill that will allow non residents to conceal carry without a permit. 🤦

Unless you’re a person of color driving home one night, when a couple white police officers decide to pull you over because you didn’t signal your lane change, even though there’s not another car around.

I'm guessing it's still better in that scenario today than it was before. We see and hear about everything now. That wasn't the case previously and I'm sure those racist incidents were much more prevalent.

The GOP is also trying to force states with more restrictive concealed carry laws to honor the concealed carry permits of other states.

H.R. 38 would allow people with state-issued concealed carry licenses or permits to conceal a handgun in any other state, as long as the permit holder follows the laws of that state.

So then next time they decide to storm the Capitol, all the yahoos from TN and TX can wander around with concealed firearms.  I'm sure that'll end well.

Well, it requires a permit. So, you’d have to have a permit from those states

Also, ive been saying for years a federal level permit that would let you carry in any state was a huge bargaining chip for the Dems to use in getting support for some increase in gun control.

And none of them wanted to even entertain it.

And now you can see it’s going to happen and the Dems get nothing for it. This one might not pass. But it’s on their agenda for when they have control again.

huge missed opportunity. It was the only bargaining chip they had and the gop took it away from them. Awful strategizing.

Please explain, then. My point (which you replied to) was that I believe reporting of these things is more prevalent but the crimes themselves are less prevalent...and that there has never been a better time in US history to be someone other than a white male. You countered with a commentary on the fact that crimes still happen. So, what is your point? Do you disagree that this happens less often now than it did in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc.?

This is not something I’ve ever heard discussed off this site, and likely for good reason.  This would probably be a non-starter with most anti-gun people or the average person in a place with strict gun control laws.

Oh yeah it definitely is. I’ve seen enough of the conversations to know that.

but legislation is a negotiation act. And one side had a huge piece of leverage and didn’t want to use it. And now the other side has taken it away. They have no reason to concede on gun rights now - they’ve come up with their own solution and they just need control again and they’re happy to wait. And they’ll probably do it through reconciliation so it only requires a simple majority since thats how we’re operating now.

if you look up the statistics on permit holders and crimes you’ll find they really aren’t the ones committing crime on a statistically meaningful level.

they had a bargaining chip and instead of using it they took a bad moral stance and now it’s gone.

I want gun control reforms. And I don’t see any other bargaining chips. So we now have to wait until the Dems have a super majority, and that it’s high enough on their list they do it.

Awful strategy.
