Per Schefter: Su'a Cravens Considering Retirement

Conn

Recommended Posts

Just for clarity.

i believe being upset with Cravens timing and attitude is entirely different than being angry about him making a decision that he felt was best for himself. You can speak out against the latter without the former.

Personally speaking, the timing has me miffed as well. But the maturity level of Su'a, especially with the latest news that his group text to teammates saying he was retiring ended with, "peace out" has been a question mark since he got in the league.

His professionalism needs work.

But he's 22. You'd like to think life would have shown him the right direction at this point, but I know a few 22 year olds who are the same way.

My post a few pages back wasnt wasn't aimed at people That we're frustrated with his timing. It was aimed at people that simply wanted to insult him because he made a decision that he thought was best for him.

This sucks, yes. Most were excited about cravens. He proved in limited action last year he belonged. Great instincts, always around the ball, very good tackler and a good rusher in spot situations.

That being said, we've had more than a few times the last couple years where the defense ended up playing better when some of the "starters" were replaced. Whether it was better play from the replacements or better overall chemistry on defense is a good debate. But Everette has played well in limited duty so I'm not overly concerned. I think we'll be just fine. The biggest blow to our defense has still been losing Taylor (not that he was some all pro but once again we'll have to play guys out of position at nt). I'm excited to see Everette get his chance and I think he will acquit himself well.

My True colors say that i don't wait until the last minute to completely throw over my teammates and adversely affect everyone around me.

He can make all the personal decisions he wants.

What it's done to his team tells me all i need to know.. he thought about nothing but himself. these aren't new thoughts, plenty of time to have done this and given everyone,, his coaches, his teammates,, time to prepare for life without him. They drafted him to use him, have planned their build with him as part of it.

He has said 'hey, i gotta do what i gotta do for me." and then threw a grenade into the barracks.

Escort him off the property. Insure he doesn't play for anyone else.

go find a job, Su'a.

This young man is free to retire if he wants. And frankly, given how destructive we know football is to the human brain, I'm shocked that so many people continue to watch and support the sport. Indeed, it would have been better for the team had he announced his decision earlier, but it is his life and his well-being is more important than a game.

I could care less that he's retiring, world needs ditch diggers to.

since his entrance to league, most all his social media has been juvenile and immature. I'm not on twitter, but given the ES thread was able to follow some of his. The reported way he handled this is the same unprofessionalism.

You expect professionalism when you make the salary he does and some college education. However, he went to USC, so the ballroom dancing classes may not have paid off.

peace out

If his heart isn't in it we don't really want him on the field. I don't hold it against the guy if he's discovered he doesn't enjoy being an NFL player, but I do wish he'd made that decision at a better time for his teammates. I expect when he's matured a bit and reflects on how he's handled it, Sua will wish the same thing.

If football is so evil I am wondering why you are posting on a football message board.

I got to hear that conversation with Compton.  All this talk about mental illness or fear of permanent injury was not supported by his words.  Guy acts like playing football is working in a coal mine.  It's entirely his right to hate his job but it's also the right of fans and teammates to feel l he let us all down.

A football player without heart is useless, move on already.  SM your drafts SUCKED.

Get him into some therapy before we close the door on him.  He's a young kid with a lot of pressure on him from many angles.  He can play, but we need to see what issues are present and see if they can be worked out in such a way that he wants to keep playing.

Sad situation, but if his primary concern are injuries, not really surprising.  Guys have been retiring for it, and if he feels like he'll never be 100% for a long stretch, it can definitely take a toll on a kid.

But mainly I wish we'd had a chance to examine this prior to the cut down to 53.

Someone mentioned this before, but I think this Su'a situation is the reason McClure made the roster, indicating that Gruden and the staff already knew of this potential issue. He is talented, young and not only trying to transition to the NFL, but also being tasked to learn not one, but two different positions. Then add in the injury history and I can understand how his view of his role as an NFL player might be tainted with doubt.

I am not trying to make excuses for him, I'm just trying to see things from his vantage point. As a fan, it is always frustrating to invest our emotions in players only to see them not reciprocate that emotion for their own careers. I would just rather not completely give up on the guy because he is struggling to realize if a career in the NFL is what is best for him. No, it's not fair to the rest of the team but that is what the coaches are for, not just X's and O's. They need to do what they can to get the best out of their players--provided they are willing to play ball.

Whether the issue is related to his injury history or mental health issues or a combination of the two, I would hope that the Redskins at least try to rehabilitate his drive to be the best player he can be and for now, it appears they are.

The emotional response to what some 22yo you've never met decides to do is mind-boggling to me.

I must admit that all the "gosh, I sure hope he's okay and wish him all the best" and mental illness stuff has me perplexed.  I'm not sure why I'm supposed to care about a kid that played for my favorite team for five minutes that was a pansy most of the time. I don't wish him any ill will either.  The whole thing just has me kinda meh.  I'm more concerned about the way we handled him from drafting him up until now.

This thread really captures ExtremeSkins in a nutshell haha.

Yep, it does..

On a side note, a thread like this dismisses the absurd notion that Extremeskins, as a message board, is dying off.

This thread isn't even a day old, and it already has nearly 20 pages, and climbing quickly.

Dying off, indeed. :806:

Thats what has you perplexed?

Not the general sentiment early in the thread to hang the kid for deciding he didn't want to play football?

Timing stinks. Screams of selfishness.

and I'm not sure where the mental

illness stuff started, but I would say the reasons he doesn't want to play are certainly forefront in his mind. The guy's vision was messed up from a concussion. I think there's plenty of good reason to not want to play anymore.

i do agree with the sentiment, though, that I'm not sure why he waited this long to make that call. It's a maturity issue for sure.

Nope.  Folks are going to be emotional, mad and extreme (pun intended) when initially getting news like that.  I wasn't surprised in the least.  I was more perplexed by those who come across like he's a loved one, standing on a pedestal shouting down folks, making up stuff about mental illness, so on and so forth.

Its not like he's a longtime fan favorite or has a documented legit reason for wanting to walk away.  All signs point to a kid that likes the limelight more than the grind....and really that's fine.  It just doesn't get my compassion meter moving.

It's pretty clear mental health is poorly understood by some on here. Hope those who need it most learn to expand their moral-ethical horizons and arenas of awareness. Would've expected more from a few members of the community

Disappointment is realized when unrealistic expectations are your barometer.

I am personally all for getting the guy help, you have to gauge your investment in an individual by their desire to address "Their" issue, which in now shared by You.

Absolutely.  That number is an honor to wear.  Could not agree more.  Hail

I would have preferred he chose to keep the #36 since he was such a big ST21 fan and wanted to model his game after him.

But the jersey # not as important as the attitude, which tells me the NFL isn't what he wants to do at this moment.

Hope he figures it out

Our boy Compton calling him out for being selfish and weak...

I knew there was something I liked about Will. Su'a needs to man up or be gone. I don't see this lasting much longer

If this is true and Cravens' reputation among his own teammates has gone sour, then the damage is already done and his presence will begin to hurt the team as a whole. I'm all for allowing Cravens time to work on whatever issues he has, but if his own teammates don't believe he wants to get better, then he needs to go for the betterment of the team.

Plenty of people dislike and are constantly "perplexed" by the hive-minded society we live in.

Perfect example is your regurgitation of the vision problems thing. HE was the only one who claimed he had vision problems. There was plenty of doubt and questions regarding the supposed vision problems, and he removed the posts. Screams of someone begging for attention.

People are acting like if he temporarily went blind that he would ever be cleared to play football again. Ridiculous.

People want to crucify people once they see an opportunity to use situations like these to claim people need to be less insensitive and more politically correct.

I hope he figures ir out too, but DJ is MUCH more deserving of that number, in my opinion.  I strongly prefer Cravens not having that number.  Hail

"Although Swearinger paid a hefty price, he actually had a good reason for paying it, and it’s even Redskins-related. The safety has been wearing No. 36 since he was in high school as a way to honor Sean Taylor. “I grew up watching the Miami Hurricanes,” Swearinger told the Redskins’ official website. “Then when [Taylor] got to the [NFL], and I think his rookie year was my freshman year [in high school] and he had 36, and I ended up getting 36. It was also a family number: My dad wore 36, and my uncle [also wore 36].” Swearinger then pointed out that Cravens hasn’t been wearing the No. 36 his entire life, so it made more sense for Swearinger to wear it."
