Coach Steve Spurrier

Q: What happened to Rod Gardner?

A: Rod sort of got speared or hit in the forearm. He's got a bruised forearm, so he was out the second half.

Q: Do you know if he'll practice or play next week?

A: We'll wait to see during the week how his injury is.

Q: How do you think Tim Hasselbeck played?

A: He played pretty well. You've got to realize it's really his first start ever, his second game of any extended playing time. He hung in there pretty well and made some nice plays. Unfortunately, he lost the ball there once, but he hung in there and played pretty well. He's a good, fine young man, and I thought he played pretty well.

Q: Has Trung Canidate re-established himself as the starting running back?

A: Trung did have one long run there that really helped and over 100 yards rushing. Obviously, when you look back, all those completions, we should have been running the ball. But you've got to believe in your receivers and in your quarterback. The pass protection I thought was very good tonight. Brandon Winey thought did a good job over there at left tackle, as well as the other offensive linemen.

Q: Can you talk about Chad Morton's return?

A: Yep, Chad had a big return. We got the lead there at halftime, but we didn't hold on. That was still a big play.

Q: What can you do to start winning the close games in the fourth quarter?

A: I don't know what you do. This is new for a lot of us, trying to win the close ones. We've not done very well at it, the last three weeks especially. We've got to keep pushing. We need to win one next week against the Giants if we possibly can. We need to get over the hump. We're in a bad habit right now when something's bad happening to us at the end of the game and we're not making anything good happen to overcome it.

Q: Can you talk about Champ Bailey and the pass interference calls against him?

A: The long pass, he did sort of bump him before the pass got there. I think everybody could see that. The other one, I think they had a slant and go, and the guy ran right into him. That was a questionable call, but sometimes they call it like that.

Q: Have you been waiting all season for a running back to break out like Canidate did today?

A: Well again, Trung had the one long run that really, really helped his average, and he ran well. I didn't realize Ladell [betts] only had a couple of carries. I thought he was going to be involved a little bit more tonight, but that's just the way it worked out.

Q: Are you not where you want to be at the quarterback position?

A: Oh, certainly we're not where we hoped to be. We got a quarterback playing his second game that's been here five weeks. That's just where we are right now. We finally did audible to one fade and ended up throwing that ball out of the ballpark, but Tim still played well. He's a young guy that hasn't played a whole lot, but he hung in there.

Q: Does Hasselbeck have the potential to be a backup?

A: Yes certainly, he has the potential to be a good, solid player. I really believe that. He made some beautiful throws tonight.

Q: How would you evaluate the team at this point?

A: Oh, I don't know where we are. I think we're sort of as good as everybody else, but obviously we're not quite good enough to win right now.

Tim Hasselbeck

Q: Did your inexperience factor into you missing the throw to Laveranues Coles that looked like it could have gone for a touchdown?

A: I'm not going to say that's why I didn't make that throw. I'm here. This organization has decided to trust me to come in and play when Patrick is not healthy, and it's my job to make play regardless of whether I've been here or I haven't been here or how short a time or how long a time. So regardless, he's running up the field, and I need to give him a chance to get his hands on the football, and I did not do that on that play. It could have been a big play in the game.

Q: Did you feel pressure on the play?

A: I just wasn't as accurate as I wanted to be. I wanted to kind of put it on his outside a little bit because I thought the guy was going to be inside him. I just put it too far outside. I missed. I don't have an excuse for it or anything like that. I should have hit him, and I didn't.

Q: What were your thoughts on the final drive?

A: Anytime you're a quarterback in that situation, you need to find guys and need to find a way to get them the ball. The drive started off pretty good. We had a nice little chunk to Laveranues, and I missed a throw to Laveranues a couple plays later, and we got Patrick Johnson running down the field, and he was running to my left, and if I could have gotten it to him a little bit quicker, he'd have been able to have a chance to catch the football instead of getting hit as he caught it. Just things like that. It's probably a combination of a lot of things.

Q: Did the Saints throw anything at you defensively that you didn't expect?

A: When we went no backs, they brought some pressure, which I hadn't seen too much of that on tape, but I thought we had an answer for it. On one play I tried to hit Zeron [Flemister], and the guy was kind of hanging on him a little bit, and we didn't get a call. Another time, they came after us, and Laveranues had been running underneath, and I was able to hit Laveranues, and we got a first down. Anytime you play a team, they're going to do some things differently than they haven't done earlier in the year to other teams. And they did some of those things to us, but we had a plan for it, and at times we were able to kind of answer their blitz and make them pay for it a little bit. When you do that, teams will kind of stop coming after you as much as they would like to.

Champ Bailey

Q: Does this seem like you're reliving the same bad dream over and over again?

A: Yeah, it's one thing to go out there and fight hard, but man, I felt like we did fight hard, but like I said last week, we just keep finding a way to lose. [Losing] is getting on my nerves.

Q: How does a team learn how to close?

A: Keep doing what you did to get you to that point, to when you've got a lead, you've just got to keep doing it. Honestly, we didn't do it.

Q: Does the loss wipe out all the good plays during the game?

A: You can't hit a guy one time and then expect him to fall. You've got to hit him again and hit him again, and we just keep hitting people, and then we just lay back and let them tear our faces up. That's just the reality of what's going on here right now. We're not punching people, not hitting them with combination punches, and they're just killing us.

Q: Is it fair to say that you're more frustrated now than at any other time?

A: Oh yeah. Every loss is frustrating. I mean I'm more frustrated with the loss we just had more than any loss that I've had in my life, my whole football career.

Chad Morton

Q: Can you talk about the frustration of starting so well and now collapsing?

A: We talk about that all the time, how we had a tremendous start and all of a sudden we've just been losing game after game. It's ridiculous. It's weird. We don't know what to do. We're in it until the last quarter, and all of a sudden we give up the lead, or the other team makes a big play, and that's the ballgame.

Q: Can you talk about what happened on the kick you ran back for a touchdown?

A: Our guys did a great job blocking, and I just kind of parted it right down the middle. Pat Johnson did a great job. He kept hustling and got the kicker too, and our guys, we finally got one. It felt good.

Q: Did you give the ball to your girlfriend?

A: Yeah, I tell her all the time I'm going to give her the ball, and finally I've been able to give her one.

Q: That's a great moment, and then you lose the game.

A: So now it takes it all away. Now it kind of didn't mean anything. It meant a lot for our guys blocking and the special teams unit, but overall if you don't win the ballgame, you can't really celebrate plays like that.

Jon Jansen

Q: Have you ever been in a situation like this before as a professional?

A: No. As a professional, my whole life, I've never been in a situation like this before. We're going to have to figure out how to deal with it, but I'm never going to be happy about it. But it's what we're forced to live with from now until next year. The best we can do is 8-8, and it's not going to get us in the playoffs.

Q: Can you put your finger on anything that may be at the crux of what's going wrong right now?

A: I probably could, but I'm not comfortable right now saying it. You guys may know the stats better than I do. What was our average per run? It's so frustrating. You earn the right to do things in this league. You earn the right to run the ball. You earn the right to do whatever it is, and then you're not allowed to. It's frustrating. It's extremely frustrating.

Q: Were you impressed with the way Trung Canidate played?

A: I am. I'm impressed with the way he ran. He came out and played hard. He ran the ball hard. He did what we asked him to do, and I thought we played well, but we didn't win.

Each time I read these quotes from Champ I become more certain that he is ready to leave. I know his performance this year has been frustrating to us fans, but you can really tell he is tired of this franchise. Can't say I blame him. It may do both parties some good if we can get some draft choices for him.

Read, "We were running the ball just friggin' fine, then someone, who shall be nameless but starts with an "S" and ends with "purrier" called four long pass plays in a row"

C'mon Jon, just say it. It won't matter, it's not like anyone gets benched for going to the owner or media.

I think what Jansen is saying is that they should be running the ball more. Even Spurrier says it. Trouble is, he says it after every game and after they have passed the ball about 40 times in a losing cause. :puke:

Rarely do I go for the read between the lines thing, but in this case, that does seem more than a little incriminating. Whoa. Not good. (Keeping in mind of course that Jansen is probably not the first player to differ with a coach on play calling).

I don't think so. Read this part from Jansen carefully...

How does SS not realize that Betts didn't get too many oppurtunities? I haven't been on the fire SS wagon as much as most, but that's unacceptable.

I agree Wild Bill...although Trung played better than I have seen in teh past...Ladell had got to be the #1 guy...if Spurrier is calling the plays, how can he not tell that LAdell isn't gettign the rock?

I think JAnsen was pissed becasue they were actually run-blocking pretty well, against a team that has been giving up a lot of rushing yards all year. I think almost everyone believes that they could have run the ball a lot more and been pretty successful, but I don't think that it's a knock on Tim H. He's obviously pissed at Steve-O. And for once, I am too...

How many freaking teams run the ball with 2 minutes to go?

What crack is Jansen sniffing? The Skins needed to get down the field and score, they didn't have time for a 10 play drive featuring the run. What a freakin dumb ass.

Jansen is a team cancer in my opinion. He doesn't buy into what Spurrier is trying to do, so freakin get rid of him. I'm so sick of the players on this team. Shut the eff up and do your job.

ALthogh I love your signature picture, I must disagree with you...I think the JAnsen was talking about the whoel scond half, when they could have extended the lead...they pass the ball on 1 adn 10 more than any team in teh league. I'm not saying that is bad, but if you're not going to get anything on 1 and 10, and then run on 2 and 10, that's not very good coaching, regardless of Spurrier's demeanor. I think he was pissed because they were doing a good job of blocking, and they actually had Trung ovwer 100...that should tell Steve something...that the run is actually working!! Everyone knows he likes to throw the ball, but why go away from what is working...2-minute drill excluded.

Ok, if you mean for the entire second half, I understand, I was assuming he was talking about the 4 and out series.

Code/Dr. D,

I know SOS's offense is a pass offense, but there are some times when you just need to pound the ball. We had the lead late in the game, the Saints couldn't stop our running game, and we were throwing it on first down with a qb that's greener than the grass on the field. It just doesn't make sense. For whatever reason, Steve can't seem to figure out how to win a close game.

Jansen has been Mr. Redskin his whole time here, and suddenly he's a cancer b/c he doesn't believe in SOS so we just just ship him out? Do really think that any of the players believe is Spurrier at this point after all of the bonehead moves over the last year and a half?

ehh, I think when you're in a 4 down situation in a 2 minute drill, it's 3rd down and 10, and you have 2 timeouts... that's actually a potential rushing situation (especially with the success the running game had), only because you don't want to end up with a 4th and 10. That's something to be avoided, and you can take a timeout immediately after the run.

You can consider that a running down (doesn't have to be, but can be thought of that way).

I agree with what Jansens insinuating. However, he DOES need to shut his pie-hole. He's been yapping all year long. Every chance he gets. Thats unacceptable. You aren't the coach Jon. Remember? Spouting off at the mouth is NOT what you're getting paid to do. Loyalty goes up and down the chain of command. It starts with moi. Mr. Redskin has made his share of mistakes this year. So I believe the advice some are offering here (shut the F up Jon) might be well-founded.
