Honestly, most people who own politicians keep it on the downlow and try to get small-seeming discrete favors to avoid tipping off others.  The fact that they're so openly bragging on this point actually gives me the opposite impression.

 

I do think they own a number of people at the federal and state level, but I also think their biggest ally in 2016 was voter apathy, which they compounded by sowing distrust on a passionate handful of people.  Remember it wasn't just Hillary they attacked- it was every Republican in the primary too- everyone else fell in line once he became the nominee.

There is a good (make that "large") chunk of the country who think "morality" means "helps my team gain power". You see it demonstrated in lots of ways.
