fansince62
are the skins building toward a single championship or are we structured and planning in a way that will lead to a sustained run of playoff appearances and SB runs? can this even be done anymore? what is teh expectation on this board? one SB run good enough and then dismantle due to cap/FA and coaches moving on? or is there a way to sustain out beyond 2-3 years? what should our expectations be? bulldog
I don't think you are going to see sustained excellence the way you saw the Cowboys or Steelers in the 1970's, where they made the playoffs every year and challenged for the Super Bowl.

Teams rise up and stay near the top for 2-3 years and then suffer a fall due to injury, age and free agency.

I am not worried about how we sustain a SB winning team for another 2 or 3 years. That is putting the cart before the horse.

We need to assemble the SB winning team first and then see which players are our core and which players are likely to be one-year contributors.

Certainly, players such as Arrington, Bailey, Smoot, Samuels are guys that are going to be the backbone of this team for the next several years barring injury.

And because they are VERY young, there is the chance that with the acquisition of a superior quarterback the Redskins could have the nucleus of a team that CAN compete for several years at an elite level.

But Spurrier has to get the trigger man first.

And we need to solidify the DL and make some sense out of a unit that is rife with age, guys coming off injuries and a player in Lang, that seems ready to walk before we make a decision on where to play him.

the Redskins need a wide receiver or two as well. I think Gardner is a #2 right now. So we need a #1 receiver and a #3 as well, preferably somebody who can use speed in the slot position.

But receivers are easier to find than quarterbacks or defensive ends.

That's why I focus on the latter.

While the Rams have two #1 picks at WR in Bruce and Holt, a lot of SB teams featured receivers taken later in the draft or acquired as free agents.

Look at the Broncos. Smith was a low pick and McCaffrey was released by NY and SF before finding a home in Denver.

Ditto for the Packers who won the SB with Antonio Freeman and second-tier pickups in Andre Rison and Don Beebe. NavyDave
Resign Westy and move Skaggs to the Slot.

Hopefully we can sign an above average QB (Brunell or a Blake)like those who won the superbowl the past two years.
88Comrade2000
A 2-3 run: 2003-2005 to be a legit superbowl contender. Then the rest of the time being a playoff team.

Just the way the nfl is today, prevents a team from being a legit superbowl contender for a long period of time. The Rams probably have one more year before the cap/free agency does them in.
