I hadn't noticed many Republicans labeling Regan a RINO. Seems to me from a casual observational standpoint Ronnie would still be on the GOP Rushmore.

Ronnie is far enough back that his life and times in office have taken on the soft-focus nostalgia where almost anything positive can be ascribed to him and his legacy.

The Reagan is RINO or even a democrat thing is fairly new - since trump. But it is real. Where he was at one time the conservative beacon, once it was pointed out that many of his positions were more central (gun control, Immigration, even abortion) the move has been to disavow him as a "true Republican". If you are not slightly to the right of Genghis Khan, then you are a RINO or worse a democrat.

To those of us who lived through Reagon I can tell you it was anything but positive. He was just as racist and disgusting as trump in many ways, just with more class and was not as cruel or nearly as vindictive. And for what it's worth he was much better at delegation. He put much more qualified people in place. I voted for him in 1980 but not in 1984. I was an impressionable lad and fell for his rhetoric about the evil empire that was Russia. I was not happy with the ineffective foreign policy of Carter so I voted for change. Then instantly regretted it.

Oh cut it out.
A vote will fix everything, you'll see.

And honestly, those who believe a 'vote' will stop this sound exactly like that to me. Reality is heading in the opposite direction.

I keep saying "best be ready"... well, are you?
Only a few more goose-steps left.

Voting the asshole narcissist out of office won't solve everything.  But it's a start.  An important start.

That's fair, same time Rome wasn't built in a day nor died in a day.

At one point the capitol city nearly burned to the ground while then emperor was playing music, it wasn't for another 400 years that the last western Rome emperor was finally killed.

By time that happened, Rome had been sacked several times.  A lot of empires had ups and downs, I'm not buying this is end game for us, especially if Biden wins.

As was noted in another thread, this has more a Summer of 67 feel to it then end of the Empire, at least in historical context.

Rome didn't have Twitter.

Twitter doesn't rip apart a superpower, it takes more then talk.

And Rome's infrastructure, military, and financial situation completely collapsed, that's huge reason why they didn't stand a chance making concession after concession to the German Barbarians until they just took the rest.

We aren't there yet, this is bad, but not that bad.  Is what happened to USSR a better example?  Again, let's have that conversation AFTER November, we make it more likely when talk like it's inevitable.

To save our country it's too bad we can't remove him now. He seems hellbent on destroying everything on his way out.

Totally agree.

I just happen to think if we do vote him out he will cry foul, he will scream fake, and he will not leave until forced. his mob will rally around him, there will be violence.
And that is if the election isn't outright rigged .. and frankly, i would not go so far as to say they won't try to suspend / cancel the election altogether.
Absolutely nothing suggests that this election will be business as usual.

The collapse of nations in the modern era always coincides with competent people with deep knowledge and key skills being pushed out for lackeys and sycophants, eventually leading to the collapse of key economic sectors and widespread poverty.

That’s one of the reasons why the Soviet Union collapsed. The most stark example of this in recent times is Venezuela, which in ideal conditions should have been the most prosperous country on the American continent after the US, but is instead a complete economic basket case. It collapsed because socialists sacked every knowledgeable member of their petro industry in favor of yes-men over a roughly 30 year period. There is no replacing of talent and knowledge.

We are not remotely close to such a scenario but it’s possible that can happen here too. We’ve seen hints of it under Trumpism where time and time again, experts have been replaced by sycophants and bootlickers. And it doesn’t help that the voting base for the party is also perfectly comfortable with brown nosing. But I doubt they’ll have unchecked power to wield at least two decades of the type of unchecked destruction needed to dismantle American prosperity.

Our future dystopia looks a lot more Cyberpunk than a totally collapsed, impoverished nation. There’s an argument to be made that we’re already living in a Cyberpunk society.

I can't believe how jealous you are of a president who can express himself so cogently on Twitter. Take this missive from within the last few minutes:

Why is he calling me out?  Has he been reading ES again?

This is the second time in 2 days that the President of the United States has called for violence against Americans.  I can't believe the debate is whether he should get censored on Twitter and not impeached again.

it’s unclear whether this is ....

  • (1) Trump indulging in pro China propaganda
  • (2) Answering a question from his waiter on how he would like his hamberger served.
    (3) rantings of the mentally ill.
  • (4) greeting the former WWF Star.

In case everyone has forgotten, here is what a real President would sound like, courtesy of Joe Biden:

Quote

I urge the protesters to exercise their rights peacefully and safely. But people all across this country are enraged and rightly so. Every day African Americans go about their lives with constant anxiety and trauma of wondering, “Will I be next?” Sounds like an exaggeration but it’s not. These tragedies, these injustices, cut at the very heart of our most sacred of beliefs: that all Americans, equal in rights and in dignity, are part of an ingrained systemic cycle of racism and oppression...throughout every part of our society.

If we’re not committed as a nation, with every ounce of purpose in our beings — not just to binding up this wound in hope that somehow the scab once again will cover things over — but to treat the underlying injury, we’re never going to eventually heal.

I am thinking 2028 and beyond.  Win or lose; Trump will be a factor in 2024 and I do think if he loses; he will run again in 2024.

If Trump loses this year I'm hoping he'll be so buried in indictments and lawsuits that him and his 3 eldest offspring won't have any ground to stand on when 2024 comes around.  That includes Ivanka's wife Jared.
